Is it worth a purchase at $39?
The game reminds me of the days of Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment, as in a rich world, no hand-holding, lot of freedom and possibilities.

Anyhow, I just wanted to mention about that $39 price tag... It's $21.45 here [http://www.g2play.net/category/4268/divinity-original-sin-steam-gift/].
A good deal. I quite like it and it indeed has a very Baldursy feel to it. It's quite demanding though and I will probably take quite some time to get through it.

Especially when it comes time to repair gear, as I have to hand out money to everyone like they are little kids on hot dog day.
Wait, equipment gets broken? Might be a new patch thing - the only piece of equipment I ever had to repair (and I had to repair it quite a bit) was my rogue's dagger. Everything else lost, like, 2-3 durability (if any at all) by the time I upgraded it.

You could just give stuff to Jahan (if you have him - another companion or a character with Blacksmith) to repair. Jahan is quite good since he starts with Scientist, which gives him +1 to Blackmith, with two pieces of equipment (belt and bracers - at least these were the only ones I saw that gave bonus to the skill) you can get to +3 Blacksmith, so you'll just need to get to level 2 of the skill to max it out.

I've tried splashing some oil on already burning peeps a few times and nothing seems to come of it, but I haven't played particularly close attention. My archer goes ahead of my Oiler in terms of initiative, so setting up a pool then lighting it up is a fantasy.
Again, do bear in mind that it might have been changed in other patches but it certainly did damage to burning targets. Not a lot but occasionally my mage would be left with 3-5 AP and wouldn't have anything else to cast that did anything useful (the staff attack blows), so I used oil on burning targets for some more damage.

God damn. I never thought about using it in conjunction with wet...I was wondering why I got frozen with it that one time and chilled every time thereafter. That's awesome, thank you.

she's a bit lumbery with all that armor on.
With Crafting 2 and and anvil, you can remove the movement speed penalty from heavy armour. To clarify, only the chest piece but still - it usually has a big penalty. Just drag the armour onto the anvil and it's done. Haste also gives you MS boost and also AP boost (if you have the Dex to not have a penalty to it, you can pick up Fast Track from Scoundrel 1 for a self-buff).

The Speed attribute also increases your MS and your AP. If you are not getting GC, then Speed should probably be your secondary attribute. Just focus on main stat, Speed, Constitution (in this order). Or if you have multiple main stats (Int/Str), you'd probably need to ration your points a bit but it's not too bad. Do note that further on in the game you'd be able to sell (unspent) Talent points for skill/attribute points and, unless patched, that gives a big boost:
1 Talent = 10 Skill points = 2 Stat points

Is that what Zombie does? Heals you with poison?
Technically, it gives you 200% poison resistance but yeah. Do note that it also damages your character if you try to heal them in any another way.

BloatedGuppy said:
Question regarding that...once I shot a zombie with the ricochet ability, and every other target hit was "resisting poison". There is no poison on my bow. Did shooting that first poison zombie poison the arrow that went on to hit the other targets? Usually I'd think there wasn't a chance, but with this game I can't be sure...
I'm not sure if projectiles get coated with stuff as they pass through objects. It would be quite cool if they did and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case but I just don't know - I've not played with an archer. I do know that zombies "bleed" poison, though - so it might have been splashes of "blood" that hit the other targets.

There's also the keeper of secrets that sells those two stat boosting books from time to time, for about 16k gold it gives one character a single stat point and 3 skill points, I stacked those books to create a warrior with 15+ strength speed and constitution, and a wizard with 5 in all spellcasting schools, including witchcraft, and a 5 in both willpower and body building.

I think that got fixed, too. She restocked at every levelup but I think Larian made her only carry the books once.

As of the 132 patch it still seems to work on my copy, does it update automatically through Steam? becuase it was still working last night when I made it to level 21

What did you think of it? How's the writing? How's the content? Is it worth a purchase at $39? How plonky is the UI? Is it SUPER plonky, or only a little bit plonky?
Not sure yet - I Kickstarted it and got my free download, but I hadn't played any previous titles in the series, so I bought them from GOG and have been working my way up to Original Sin.

If it's anything like the other Divinity games, it should be pretty damn good on all counts. I'm really enjoying the series - far more than a few other isometric RPGs I could mention.

Dunno - I finished the game about a month ago and I've got it through GOG. I didn't bother upgrading what I had while playing because the patches that came out mostly weren't that worth it. Some more significant ones came out shortly before I finished (I was 5-ish hours from the ending) and after.

Having taken some advice and restarted the game: It's pretty alright. But holy shit it is repetitive.

When you've got a zombie/leech/shield tank with a charge and two spin attacks, a mage with summon, a mage with support and an archer the game kind of becomes a joke, assuming you don't go and fight anything 3-4 levels higher than you.
Don't get me wrong, shooting a cloud of poison into a group of enemies and then setting it on fire so it explodes, charging in with your hasted heavy armour warrior and spinning things to death feels great the first few times. But once you realize it'll kill pretty much any group up to the 15 hour mark (second town) and most single bosses can be defeated using the ever thoughtful strategy of "hit them a lot with everything" combat becomes a chore while you wait for enemies to finish their moves where they slowly plod about and the writing just isn't good enough to hold it up.
6/10 so far. I'll probably play it some more but unless it does something spectacular it's never going to be near my top X anything.

I haven't played it, but I have a question about it:

Are there any relationship elements in the game between you and party members?

Any time I'm out of town for any prolonged length of time my weapons RAPIDLY degrade, even just from normal combat. I think I'll work on getting Jahan to repair stuff.

Hmm...that sounds super promising. I think I'm going to check that out, see how it works. Thanks!

Erm, vaguely. Sort of. The two companion characters[footnote]There are two with personalities and, like, dialogue. You can also get more hirelings but they don't don't say anything.[/footnote] don't have a lot - occasionally they'll comment with their thoughts on a situation you encounter and the main characters can agree with or denounce the comment but it's only fluff. The relationship with them doesn't get much deeper than that - you can keep scolding them for their beliefs and they won't leave the party or anything, similarly, only ever agreeing with them won't win you "loyalty points".

The two main characters do have a lot of conversation with each other - mostly concerning each one's view on a particular thing - they can agree/disagree on a variety of points. At the end of the game depending on how divided/close they there are a variety of endings for them - from becoming lovers through there being a one-sided affection to them sort of just drifting apart.

So I guess, the short answer is "not really". For basically the whole game the two keep a professional relationship with probably some friendship thrown in and the very end is just a brief description of "what happened after".

There's sort of a consequence in Jahan's quest towards the end of the game, if you disagree with him enough times you are given an alternate way to complete his quest and get the key for the last temple. I know it's not much and I ended up accidentally killing the alternate target before even doing Jahan's request so it was a moot point in the end anyway, but its there if you don't like him and want to leave him twisting in the wind.

I did not know that. Interesting. Well, anyway - I liked Jahan, I agreed with most of what he said. I especially liked him compared to Madora, although that's not saying much - saying he's better than Madora would probably count as damning him with faint praise.

Cons:
Casting animation and walking a bit slow.
Inventory can get a bit cumbersome.
Classes are a bit unbalanced.
Combat can sometimes be frustrating because the character models move, so you try to click to attack, and then you end up moving right up to them instead (bye bye ranger).
Since character models move, it is very very difficult to determine the position for a backstab.
Story is subpar when they are talking about serious stuff
Out of combat ice is a pain.
Taking the perk "Glass Cannon" will make this game insanely easy, even on hard mode, and even with the difficulty mod on hard mode.
UI could be better (I click on my skill bar to use a fireball. I want to use meteor strike instead, so I click that instead. Fireball has been cast on the bottom of my screen).
Does anyone even eat food?
Some parts of the game is basically pixel hunting, or there being a random button you have to press but you don't even know the button is there.
EDIT: RNG can sometimes screw you over. Shopkeepers sell skillbooks. Bad rng = you never get the skill you want (basically, reload the game before talking to a merchant/looting chests to not end up having only level 6 skills when you are level 18).

Pros:
Combat system and interacting with environment is really well done.
The writing is good when it's humorous (basically anything that's not about Source)
Level design is good.

All in all, it was a good game and I played ~90 hours of it. But if animations and movement speed were faster and some UI fixes, then it would probably would have taken me ~60 hours to beat.
