Got a friend of mine who recently jumped on the MAC bandwagon and refuses to look back... as a result he spends his time on his "uberbox" surfing the net and playing WoW (as almost NOTHING else works on it).

I want to get him a game, but I don't want to like... go out and get it. Are there any services where I can just swipe a card and have a game e-mailed to him? Looked around, there's no Steam for MAC, Direct2Drive is PC only...

Some games are released for Mac, for everything else you can get Crossover Games. But, frankly, I've seen it in action, and it is far from perfect. Get him some PC game, with a note saying "incentive".

there's pretty much no games for macs (cause the only people to use them are pretentious wankers so I'd like to think the gaming industry is fairly punishing them) but if you look around the nets for games compatible with macs anything you find will likely offer something like that.
The "wankers" bit was uncalled for and just plain rude.

OT: You could always buy him a Windows OS install disk, all Macs come with a handy little tool known as Bootcamp, which allows Mac users to have Windows on their Macs on a separate partition. For example, on my MacBook Pro, I have Snow Leapord and Windows 7 Ultimate, so whenever I want to play games I just switch over to the PC side.

Whatever floats your boat, but I am happy with my mutant Mac/PC.

Bootcamp? Standard in Leopard? Install Windows on your Intel Mac?

Ah, beaten to it. Rats.

TransGaming, the company that actually ports most big Mac games to the Mac, runs GameTree Online [http://www.gametreeonline.com/]. I don't know if you can buy a game for someone else there, as I've never used it (not being a smelly Mac owner like Trujkin and our art team), but that's probably your only option.

Don't expect a wide selection though, or a lot of current games.

As a mac user, I second boot camp. Macs aren't for gaming; there are a few games that work with OS X (including a surprisingly large array of free ones), but the majority don't.

My lovely friends, thanks for the pointers: Gametree was a good find... if nothing else, I can at least tell him about that site! Up until now the only digital download he's bought was Diablo 2 through Blizzard (which was regrettably quite the eyesore on his huge monitor - 800x600 stretched over that amount of real estate was kind of rough!)

Am I missing something, why should you care if you friend is content with wow on mac os?

If you need to buy him a gift, I'm sure you could come up with something a little more imaginative.

The whole bit about Mac-only users being pretentious jerks is fairly accurate in my experience. Everyone I've met who only uses Macs look down their noses at the unwashed masses who aren't hip enough to get a Mac. Then Apple doesn't do much to dispel the stereotype either with their ads with the two guys. One is dressed in an ill-fitting business suit and is made out to be an awkward dork. Meanwhile, the other guy who is supposed to be a Mac is the cool, hip kid with the trendy clothes. The person being a Mac also acts like a really conceited jerk on some of the ads. PC computers are not as un-cool, dorky and poorly running as the stereotype in the commercial and Macs are not really the best thing since sliced bread either as they are in the commerical. Both "kinds" of computers (There is no one brand of PC computer as there are thousands of different companies that make them, some of which are every bit as cool looking and multimedia-worthy as even the best Mac) have their good points and bad points. Comparing Macs which are only made by Apple Computer (talk about a major monopoly!) to computers labeled "Personal Computers" (which is really a misnomer because any computer portable and affordable enough for the average person to take it home from a store and use it just for personal use IS a "personal computer" no matter what company made it or what OS it runs)is a poor comparison. It's like comparing something very specific and unique like a Hummer SUV to "other passenger vehicles with four wheels". Not a fair comparison. Now, if they compared a specific model or line of Macs to a specific model of line of computers made by some other company (say Dell or IBM, for example), then that would be a more fair comparison.
