Actually I find all the mis-information about the 2012 theory to be rather annoying. If you're going to try and shut people up about it and expose it for it's lunacy, please for the love of God have the courtesy to know what you're talking about...
enlighten me then? Don't just insult me, put some substance in. if you disagree, tell me why. Goodness
I wasn't actually refering to you, just people in general...

For a start the Mayan calender simply ticks over and enters a new period. It doesn't just end. The Mayans believed this was the day the earth was swept clean, and a fresh start for the earth.

Also there is an abudance of scientific proof that the Earth's poles will shift. We will be alligning with the center with the galaxy, this only happens once every 26,000 years or so. The solar winds which shield the earth from interstellar radiation will stop for a period of days. These are all facts, the damage likely to be caused is up for debate but all of these events are predicted to occur around the same time as the Mayan calender's renewel.

I'm not advocating the theories are true but there is a lot more behind them than your average person cares to look into.

Actually not all groups believe 2012 will be the end of the world at all. It may simply mark the beggining of the evolution of the planet and Its inhabitants. this will happen due to the afformentioned cosmic radiation affecting our DNA. Some of the most interesting threories I have read indicate that the civilization of Atlantis and it's inhabitants went through a similar process.

There is a lot of spiritual psychobabble out there but once you learn to sift the shit from plausible stuff, you are left with some interesting theories, some of which may come into fruition. More importantly I've found new ways to understand things I previously didn't or didn't think about when I was studying the 2012 theories. Most of that has nothing to do with the theories themselves but a lot of what I read seems to resonate with the way I see the world.

I don't believe anyone who thinks the world is going to suddenly blow up on that day, but I can understand why some people would want it to.

I always found it amusing they could predict the end of the world, but not their own civilization. Lol indeed

The world will actually end on December 22nd 2012 when a bunch of disgruntled apocalypse predictors are so annoyed about being wrong that they construct a doomsday device.

There, that's better. I agree with you on almost all points. now, scientifically, there shouldn't be much warning if the poles do suddenly decide to shift, and even if they do, it has happened before, a few times, and life is still here. Even if it does, the magnetic field should hold for a while, protecting us from the cosmic radiation. As to it changing our DNA, from my understanding it is far more likely to kill us, but hey, who knows.

But even then, why during a galactic alignment? If there was some huge magnetic or other energetic force building up, i am pretty sure that even our admittedly poor technology would be able to detect it. And even then, i haven't heard anyone mention whether or not the galaxy would be aligned in 2012. And even so, what the fuck does a galactic alignment have to do with anything, and what is a galactic alignment when we we live in a round, disc shaped galaxy, particularly on the outer edge of it. And, even if the mayans were astronomers, how would they know? UNless Galileo rowed his ass over to latin america and stole a mayan telescope, i don't think the Mayan had the ability to judge anything more than a relatively short distance away. It is nearly impossible even with our technology to see all of our galaxy's stars, so how would the mayans know about anything, let alone have the know how to calculate down to the day when shit would go down. Our solar system lines up every once in a while, but that doesn't mean that we are boned, it just leads to more interesting horoscopes.

forgive my ranting but jeez, i find this all such bullshit that it makes my head wanna explode. Do keep in mind, i am not trying to offend you, jsut asking some questions that i don't have the answers to, and that i can't find answers to.

and, i will say this. Anyone who does want the earth to just disappear in a cloud of smoke is a lazy coward, a lazy coward who feel too sory for themselves to help other, help themselves or do anyhting other than take up oxygen and maintain a body temprature of roughly 30 degrees.

I've alwys believed that if the world ends, truly ends, we won't see it coming. We'll just have that last "Oh shit" moment before oblivion. The whole 2012 thing is all just misinformation and a lack of understanding, mostly concerning the Mayan calander. It's rather silly though... you have these professed scientists and experts basing their theories off of a civilization that would cut open their tongues and genitals evey night to sacrifice blood for their gods so the sun would rise the next day. Lets not forget the foolishness of believing Doomsday prophecies of a people that didn't even see their own demise coming (At least that's what is believed...we can't rally ask them if they knew or not. They at least never wrote anything down about it).
And is believing in a God who died to come back and leave sane? Thinking intellectually we look back at them and the Greeks and Think Silly people but how will people in 2000 years look at us?

OT: I think the Dogs will out Grow us in numbers and start killing off our young then carry a modified virus that will kill out Reproductive systems so our numbers never grow again. Alrighty.... now to the real topic lol. When people take the Mayan Calendar and say it Predicts the world will end December 21 2012 you have to do 1 thing. Punch them in the mouth lol. Seriously though the Mayan calendar doesn't predict nothing. It just ends. Thats all. Its all just hype of hysteria. Remember Y2K?

No.... what gave you the impression that I thought it was?

The apocalypse theories are definately FALSE... the Mayan calender just ends, who's to say that the guy who made the calender hated his job and quit because the king was having flings with his wife? Anything is possible, the end of the world though naaaaah, did the Mayans predict their own ass-kicking by the Spanish? Nooooooo, so how are they going to predict our galactic ass-kicking?

My theory:
It doesn't matter how, when, or why, I think that irrational people are going to somehow blame George W Bush for the apocalypse. I just know it!

Again I feel I have to point out that the Mayans have little more to do with predicting the end of the world than by simply having a calendar. They were phenomenal astromoners however and were literaly thousands of years ahead of other civilizations at the time. It is said that their long count calender which is the one which completes it's cycle in 2012, is actually more accurate than our current Gregorian one. That aside, the Mayans believed that there were 13 or so cycles of the Earth. They lived in the 6th, we are in the 7th and are about to enter the 8th. This also corresponds with our transition into the age of Aqaurius according to today's astrologers. The Mayans believed the world would be cleansed in differing ways, mainly by floods and fires... Now we know that the Mayan civilization disappeared fairly quickly and that many of their ruins were barely even ruined over time. They did actually disapear around the time they predicted the change into the 7th age. There is approximately 5800 years between each cycle.

Now that's where it ends for the Mayans, nothing was actually predicted by them concerning 2012. It is simply the passing of a new cycle. Now I don't get why so many people get worked up over that alone.

However the scientific predictions for this time do speak for themselves. We will be seeing a lot of geological changes to the planet, this may affect us catastrophically, it may not. It may even explain global warming. After all I don't think greenhouse gases and the depletion of the ozone layer could affect Mars could it? That's right, Mars's ice caps have been reduced by 70 odd percent since the 1980's... Hmm...

As for the DNA changes, it seems a plausible theory as other species DNA has been changed over the years. According to New Age beliefs the more we prepare for it, the more likely we'll survive. As it stands, not being prepared for such changes will make the population most likely to die. Now add in the opportunity to sell you something to help with this, and you have found the end of the usefulness for that source material. Interestingly tho, the theories remain that the atlanteans may have reached this state of acension. This would also explain the sudden disappearence of the Mayans. Now whether or not we'll turn into a population of Dr Manhatten's remains to be seen but it would certainly be cool.

It is hard to describe how the galactic alignment works but suffice to say it is real and we can expect some interesting events in the years to come. It's the seeming grand orchestration of it all that makes the 2012 theories the most appealing yet. There is an awful lot riding on it, and lots of evidence to show something will happen. Regardless of whether or not the world will end, it seems to be a good point in history to take a step back and realise how far we've come and what's really the best way to progress.

Now forgetting all the theories for a minute, I think most of the adverse reaction towards believing the world will end is that people simply cannot comprehend the thought of it happening, or are scared to death of it being likely to happen any time soon. There are literally millions of ways the galaxy could deal us the short straw and have us be wiped off the face of the planet in seconds. From the ultra powerful magnetic fields produced from Jupiter, to the random waves of radiation that the milky way is constantly being bombarded with. If it wasn't for the solar winds, this would reach us. In fact the solar winds did stop for a few days in the late 80's... Which is almost precisely when we started noticing the ozone layer was being shredded.

I think the lying down and wanting for it to happen comes from many people disliking the world as they see it. Myself included. I long for the days of living of the land again, moving with the animals and having no cares other than eachother and the food on our plates. Capitolism would be but a distant nightmare and kids wouldn't go hungry becuase there wouldn't be too many mouths to feed in the first place. Ignorance is most definately bliss...

I don't believe it personaly. A whole doomsday theory created because somone found some ancient callender that stopped at 2012? A load of nonsense if you ask me
i personally believe that the poor man who was carving the calendar decided that after fifty years of arthritic fingers from craving and chipping the big honking thing, that he was gonna do something else, like basket weaving, or fruit picking.

Mayan: "ow my freaking fingers... screw this, i'm outta here."
Priest: "So... world ends in 2012?"
Mayan: "Yeah, fuck it i'm done."
Priest: "But... won't that mean that the people in 2012 are gonna have a fit?"
Mayan: "Nah, Fuck'em. No one'll believe this anyway."

i mean, lets not forget that this is a race that was beaten by a small gang of dudes with dumb hats and funny mustaches. And we think that they are into some cosmic secret we don't know? Pfft.
hah, if we could go back in time and tell that Mayan what his 50 years of hard work meant for our society, im sure he'd laugh his ass off.
now as for the

so what is suppose to happen in 2012 all ive seen is the hoo ha about some film that will be terrible but some how generate record profits while the publisher will complain about piracy sapping sales now that is all the end of the world there will be concerning 2012

and i would like to voice my agreement with the opinion that the Mayan calendar is a load of crap

its tin hat time (you know instead of hammer time :| )

remember politicians and the media both have reasons to scaremonger
politicians are scaremongers because it helps them control teh people
and the media likes to scaremonger because they can make money from it
forum posters like to scaremonger because it can generate much hilarity far more than many other ways

Who cares if the world ends? If it does I won't be around to see it, so someone send me pictures of it.

The idea that the end of the 13th b'ak'tun signals the end of the world was never mentioned by the Mayans. There are some dates that have higher periods. Every 52 years they would hope the gods granted them another 52 years, when their haab' and tzolk'in cycles (365 and 260 day cycles respectively) synchronized.

Then you must remember that dates are not real. They're a human invention to contextualize the passage of days for our own benefit.

Researched this a few days ago for an article :p

Fear is a powerful tool to control; you need to watch some American news shows and political talks (specifically right-wing), they use it all the time. The same form of control is what the makers of this film are betting on (in addition to the typical sensationalist attitude we all have) to make money.
