Well, I'm happy to say that not one single dollar of those 76.4 billion is mine :) I've never bought anything Apple. It's absolutely amazing how they managed to lie through their ass back in 2001, acting like they invented the MP3 player. Since 1999 I had an mp3 player and had no problem converting my existing CD's into MP3. Yet, the entire American public fell on their backs in awe and payed hundreds of dollars for that stupid iTunes thing... And it's amazing just how blind people get after spending so much money. I've yet to encounter any other person that has recently bought an iPhone 4 that will agree that the Galaxy S2 is far far far superior, cheaper and with better mobile service fees.

Apple is here to stay and I suspect that their boldness will only get worse. Well, I'm not here to stop the tide but I'll never get dragged by the current either.

So what is Apple going to do with all that cash?
Why, it's very simple my friend.

Seriously, I don't really think we're that far off from something like the Franchise Wars as depicted in Demolition Man.

Steve Jobs probably has his own personal stockpiles of iTanks and iCBMs in his backyard. It'd bring a whole new meaning to "Corporate Warfare", at least.

Edit: Now that I think about it, the super sterile future world depicted in Demolition Man sort of reminds me of an Apple Store already. Just give everything a white iPod glossy sheen to it and paste a few Apple logos over some buildings and the police cruisers and you're good to go!

It's pretty impressive, and slightly worrying that they could theoretically buy America
To be fair, if they did do that, they'd also buy the $15 trillion debt that America has, which Apple couldn't hope to pay off.

Actually....

The money the USA has: $73 billion
The money the USA owes: $15 trillion

.......and who said Capitalism works?

Honestly, considering every nation on the planet owes someone money, I think all debts in the world should be cancelled out, and the world economy realigned so nations can actually afford stuff without having to go into debt.

It'd be a LOT of hassle, but at least it'd be a clean slate.

Apple cash balance: $76.4 billion
USA cash balance: $73.7 billion
My cash balance: $ -19,000 (Damn you student loans!)
You've factored in your own student loan into this equation, but what about America's loans? Everyone reading this thread is probably richer than the USA given that they have the highest debt in the world.
I'm too busy to dig into the St. Louis FRED atm, but let me simply say this you guys are very very wrong.

The federal governments current cash holdings might be 73.7 billion, but keep in mind that doesn't count the FED which is our central bank/controls the money supply. That would add a few trillion to the count.

Also keep in mind that yearly cash inflows are currently over 2520 billion dollars for the government budget alone, to think you could buy it with apples 76 billion is laughable.

PS: http://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/reports/ir/ir_expense.htm

See how our interest payments have been going down while our inflows are going up? That's a good thing. Our interest payments vs inflows are actually a fairly small percentage in comparison to many many times in our history.

A space program would be nice. We've gotta get off this rock eventually, and if we populate the universe, that would open up huge new markets for their products.
The iShuttle, maybe? I'd buy it.

OT: Well, this is pretty darn impressive, but admittedly not that surprising, considering both the massive popularity of Apple products and the staggering U.S. deficit.

*Sigh* Steve Jobs is not going to take over the country. He wouldn't know what to do with it.

They could buy the US government.

New from apple. The iGovernment. The iGovernment aims to improve and simplify the governing experience by removing voting altogether. Instead of having to chose between 2 different parties you will get 1 government with yearly updates. But don't worry we're not some evil tyrannical corporation hell bent on controlling every aspect of your life. To prove this the the iPresident will always be black. Unless you want to wait 10 months for a white one. (which lets face it nobody will want to because the next black president will be be there in 3 months after that)

OT: If Congress would get their act together then it wouldn't be an issue. As it is, that's pretty freaking sad.

It's those damn Republicans and their pro-cannibalism agenda.

How many innocent prostitutes will be consumed by Steve Job's ravenous hunger before Washington realizes the threat cannibals pose to our society?

It kind goes like this:

Who's richer, the guy with a Porsche but can't afford it, or the guy with a beater who can afford it?

But yeah, Apple buys out America. I'm calling it now.

It would be nice to see someone actually aim to make a positive change in the world instead of just hoarding money. All of it is worth absolutely nothing once your gone. Why not leave behind a legacy people will remember you fondly for? Go spend a few bil on rebuilding poor countries.
This is exactly what i've been stressing to a lot of my friends they don't understand the phrase "Everything goes back in the box" and i really am not big on the monetary system since all it's done throughout history is just create a bid divide on purpose of the rich and the poor and yet some say its a "necessary evil" when it really totally isn't because we don't want those that just horde the money and abuse it instead of doing better things like creating better improved technologies and products that actually last a lot longer instead of the "make the products last less so we make more money off you" bullcrap because that just leads back to money again which is a horrible greedy pointless cycle.
