Apple making a gaming console

Forum, I've heard some rumors that Apple is busy developing a gaming console which will be released in 2012-2013. I'm wondering if these rumors are correct as it would make sense for them to do something like this after having some succes with games on the iPhone.

So if this were true, would you consider buying a console from Apple? And how much would you pay for it? How much would it cost? (considering Apple products tend to be quite expensive)

Please don't turn this into an Apple bash thread, for the sake of the discussion: What would it be called? Would it have a system like Microsofts Natal and Sony's Move? Would going online require a subscription like XboxLive?

Apple has tried this before. It did not go well. I doubt they are willing to risk such a thing again.

Plus, with the addition of Steam now, it makes even less sense. They are just starting to get into the computer gaming business again, why would they try and tackle consoles?

I would not buy it. Probably because it would make the PS3 seem as complex as a toothbrush, therefore ensuring that nobody will develop for it.

Well it's been what...15 years since then? And the market is considerably different.

Plus they've expanded their trademark to things such as "Hand held gaming device" and "Stand alone video-game device". So a handheld and a console wouldn't come as a shock.

I could imagine that given how closed apple is, they would probably only allow like 3 Developers to make games on it, as long as they can Dictate its Distribution (Online) and get a cut of the sales

I have to agree with this, i think its far more likely they will start developing computers more geared towards gaming than try and break into a whole new market.

If they did make a console however it would be very aesthetically pleasing, small, powerful and would require you to re-mortgage your house in order to afford one.

wrong order. Apple made macs first and stayed mainly in the backgound as Microsofts main competitor for the "home computer" market. they then changed tack and developed the Ipod and when that sold well they developed the Iphone, Ipad... and maybe next the Igame? (i called that name!!)

I'm afraid that the sort of 'innovations' Apple put into their products won't fly with games consoles. Fancy adverts and stripped down versions of already existing products does not a profitable console make (although the Wii seems to have proved me categorically wrong on that point). Maybe a casual console then. Would be funny to see Nintendo's pathetic ploy end up backfiring on them. Would be a shame though, because as much as they deserve everything they get because of the Wii, being displaced by Apple would be like curing a cold by contracting AIDS.

so you would get iXXXXXX then just a year later! iXXXXX 3g! now with 2 player option and pointless 3G network Features! then iXXXXX 4.2G We made it smaller! Give us moar Monay!

Oh! and dont forget the console will have so much chrome on it, you would have permanent glare if you dared play it in daylight without the curtains drawn! unless they go with bland over the top white which will stand out like a soar thumb xD
