I've made no bones about the fact that I can't stand the Apple cult and the people who must run out to buy the latest dropping of white plastic that emerges from those stuck-up fools in Cupertino. While I respect the iPhone as a great device, I dislike the closed platform model and that Apple charges such a premium for its "cool products."

So I love that this privacy thing might blow up to become a huge black eye for the company that could stand to be brought down a few pegs in the hipster pantheon.
I'm in 110% agreement with these sentiments.

Good. This nonsense is ridiculous.

There is a huge difference between having the capability such that a customer can phone in and say "hey, my phone was stolen, track it" and law enforcement having the ability to access constantly-collected information or to request that tracking be started without the consent of the owner.

And they very likely are saving all of the information about where their phones go. It would be a pretty small amount of data and would be extremely valuable. They'd be crazy not to if they thought they could get away with it.

I love how this has become another thread for complaining about the target demographic of Apple products. Escapists are nothing if not consistent. <3

This has been blown out of proportion, and totally misrepresented. First off the article doesn't make reference to the fact that Google are also being included in this, as Android also tracks your location. With Android however this is an opt-in service, something which has not been taken into account by the senator. What people are missing out is that this data remains on your phone, it doesn't leave it at all. The data is stored on your phone, and is not being harvested by Apple. There is no scandal here, just misinformed people shouting about things they don't understand.

but its some much easier to panic and hate on apple

lol its always easier to panic and hate a IP then actually getting all the information.

I honestly don't care if they track me with a cell phone, iphone or ipod touch. They need to come in person if they want to do something with that information and actually who would want to know where you are anyway. Your not some action movie hero or anything where the villains have to find where you are to kill you so stop with all the panic people I mean seriously your not some action hero against a evil organization.

What the hell......ppl should band together and file couple of million lawsuits. that will teach Apple :D Serious privacy invading here! I dont want my movements recorded and stored around witheout any protection...and id never even agree on such a thing. Damn i wish i had an iPhone so i can sue em X_X
You know google does this same thing right? Though at a much higher accuracy level and frequency?

Let's all keep in mind that they HAVE to do this. This is a LAW. A law passed in the early part of the decade requires phones to be tracked.

I'll bet they're funneling this information to the Department of Homeland Security. This is worse than the ECHELON system.

Well, at least when I buy a GPS-enabled phone, I know that I won't have to wait long for The Man to track me down and cart me off to Gitmo (if He so desires).

I don't mind this so much; I have nothing to hide. I'm concerned at the fact that Apple is doing it all though, even if it's for something as innocent as demographic and market research.

But you are ok with *literally* every other smartphone manufacturer in the US doing it too?

No. I like Apple; I'm not picking on them. I know that every other manufacturer does it too, and, after reading up on it a little, I understand why. Now I'm uncomfortable that the government feels the need to do this. :S Not only to track us, but to log everywhere we visit, too.

Only the government is allowed to track your movements!!!!

Anyway this is pretty shitty, I hope Apple has to remove this. However, turns out that Android and Windows Phone 7 or w/e they called it are also tracking.
Call me brainwashed but actually I feel safer with a government knowing where I am than the same situation with some soulless corporation.

Sure the invasion of privacy isn't ideal, but at least the government doesn't take my information in order to sell me shit.

Side note: Along with Sony's debacle its shaping up to be a really bad week for fan boys. Coming up next: Microsoft leaves its side door unlocked and someone makes away with a backup copy of all XBL account information. Also later: Nintendo discovers a security breach when somebody ties an extra string to their inter-office tin-can phone system.

Hooray?!?!

Being a cult wasn't enough power, they had to turn into Orwellian style big brother?

Sorry to say it, but Google's Droid phones have been doing a similar thing.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/04/22/google_android_privacy_concerns/

Time to go back to those car phones or those gigantic cell phones. What? Does that show my age?

I had almost forgotten about this ad. I find it extra funny these days- the sheer blind loyalty that nearly all Apple owners I encounter display places them firmly in the seats of those depicted in this TV spot.

Sucks for those people who own an iphone.. But then again.. They were dumb enough to purchase one in the first place, so no real harm done..
