Troika always left it to their fans to fix their bugs for them. Other examples are VTM:bloodlines and ToEE.
Both games are properly fixed when you DL the fan patches.

I didn't like Arcanum though. Combat is still the heart of all crpgs and Arcanum had the worst combat.

Arcanum was a great game, but it suffered from the Troika disease.

All Troika games were brilliant in their own way, but suffered from serious bugs and unbalanced gameplay.

BTW, does anyone remember the Arcanum manual? Man, I really miss manuals like that...

Ok in a previous thread I mentioned a game called 'Arcanum' which was by the makers of Vampyre: the masqurade but a totally different style of game. Both games were brilliantly made and a wonder to play. They were both also extremly bugged

I feel this should be a testimate to how good each of these games are that a company can release 2 extremely bugged games but both are still amazingly fun to play and extremely open

Those of you who have come to this thread wondering what arcanum is: It is a top down RPG (Diablo style) in a steampunk era. You play as a self designed character exploring the open world of arcanum. You can use magic, technology and skills to and any quest can be done however you choose. This openess is taken so far that any quest you encounter can be done however you feel. You can even kill the person giving you the quest and just take the rewards. You can kill every person in the game, and the shear number of quests is staggering. You have to play it multiple times just to see most of them. I would advise it to any fan of an open RPG

My real question though is: Has anyone else actually played this game??
I did. It is my favorite CRPG. I had the luck to play the final, unbugged, fully patched version. Never had any problem with it. And it is nothing like the Elder Scrolls like someone mentioned. I advise everyone on the escapist to play it at least 1 time. You wont regret it.

Oh yeah i loved the game, yeah it had its problems and lacked decent multiplayer but damn it was fun! it was funny how many time i re-mae my charaters to get past those guys on the bridge in the first town!! magic was crazy overpowered, you just needed the first level death spell and spam that the whole game LOL.

Oh, the countless hours wasted on the game. Deelightful! Especially the little secrets you could find, like the mecharachnid guarded basement.
I've long wanted to have a play of its multiplayer mode with someone. (It's playable solo, but completely impossible that way)

I beg to differ. It's the mooks that were underpowered. You could usually get to 100% alignment really fast, regardless if magic or tech. Once there, your chosen discipline kicks ass, while your opponents' malfunctions almost constantly.

I really enjoyed arcanum, when I played it. I had a gunslinging gnome. :D Had to rely a lot on molotovs in the early game to help me stand a chance though... revolvers don't take down giant rock golems very well without some explosive assistance. Whilst I'm opposed to remakes, a world and a game of its type would be wonderful done on newer technology, taking into account improvements in UI, AI, and so on. I really wish there were more games like it.

On the disc, did anyone else have a second campaign starting on some kind of small town where you only had two ways out, one to a desert islandish place full of zombies and the other a forest (you had to save someone)?
Yea I had that. Even played it on a LAN with a few friends that I got into the game. Unfortunatly it was really hard and then the story for it trailed off quite quickly. It was never completed properly to work as a proper add on. Good fun for a LAN game though. And the level editor they gave with it has lead to some awsome extra campaigns to play. Gotta love the online communities sometimes

I had the feeling it was a bit...incomplete.

That was the one that began by defining supernatural selection? What an awesome idea!

Yep, I played a dwarven gunslinger named mr. Dawkins once. I remember going overboard with those molotovs, too. Never could get that explosive gnome to join my party, though...

You know what? When I first started this post I was concerned that I was the only person who played this game on the escapist but its good to see that others have and not only that but theres people here who enjoyed it as much as me. Those who liked it but never completed it Id advise you to do that. Its still as fun now as before and infact my yearly replay has come around and im currently working my way through Tarant (the city of quests).

Those of you on the escapist who have never encounterd this game id advise you to check it out and give it a go at least. Especialy if you call yourself and older PC gamer. (Console gamers may want to give it a miss, I know how many feel about slightly slower paces or reading)

I actually never played this but I couldn't say why. Just one of those games that escaped me I guess. If I ever get caught up on the games I have backlogged I'm wanting to give it a shot.

That's a massive "If" though, considering I've had to stop myself from buying games I've so many ready to go.

For those who are looking for this game it was hard to find for a long time but Good Old Games (www.gog.com) now has it available for $6 USD. I played the heck out of this game and highly recommend it, buying this game will be the best six dollars you could ever spend.

Awesome setting and style but hampered by Planescape Torment syndrome hey lets make combat completley and utterly worthless with certain build's completley trivialising over half the game!

One of only two games ever that allowed me to play as a gun-slinging prostitute (Points if you can think of the other!). Yeah, I remember the game extremely fondly. I've even got it sitting around here somewhere, I really should give it another playthrough. Haven't touched it in years!

For those curious the game's actually available cheap from GOG as well. I highly recommend it if you're into computer rpg in the same vein as Fallout, Baldur's Gate, or even to an extend the Diablo series. Arcanum really does stand alone.

Beautiful soundtrack as well:

Yep, definitely have to give this another go.

Arcanum has been one of my favourite games since it first came out. There are few games I've replayed as much as I have Arcanum.

Good lord do I love that game...

Since it's a western themed game and I just saw it on GOG...Desperados [http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/desperados_wanted_dead_or_alive]?

Err, guys? You do realize this thread's been necroed from about 2 years ago, right?
I did not. As it stands right now though; huzzah for Arcanum!
