Professor Layton is an archaeologist plus avid puzzle solver.

Jurassic park games pretty much speak for them selves.

Dr. Edwin Linsey in the sixth chapter of Eternal Darkness.

There was a really old game I used to love called Paganitzu, which featured an Archaeologist as its protagonist, called Alabama Smith (I see what they did there..)

Try The Secret World. No pics unfortunately, but the second main area of the game (Egypt) is full of archaeologists, either Egyptian (the Marya, who double as freedom fighters against an ancient cult), or the odd few from Oxford University (as you do). Only issue is it's an MMO (albeit buy-to-play, no subscription required although additional missions are unlocked via paid-for DLC). Still worth a look though :)
Are you sure? I think I found one of her:

Can you confirm?

Also I don't have plans to play it. I just need help to create again a list in Listal site.
Yep, that would be her :). Although what I meant to say originally was that I didn't have any pictures myself, since I was on my iPod rather than PC and with limited internet and battery life. So I didn't really have time to Google it there and then. That being said you can find pretty much any photo/pictures on Google, including lots most people don't want to see...

That remind me, there is a clone videogame of Layton published by Konami:

Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights

Thank you for remind me.

Why, professor Layton, for one! At least, I think his degree was in archaeology.

Also, I'm not sure if they count, but characters can become archaeologists in World of Warcraft and Sims can dig around in Egypt and disturb ancient pyramids. Doesn't get much more archaeology-like than that I guess.

Edit: Snap, too late on mentioning Layton now, I see.

She isn't technically an archaeologist, more of a freedom fighter type fighting against deranged cultists from escaping into the rest of egypt; she does little in the way of looking up things from the past or adventure in ancient ruins.

However, these two are actual archaeologists who do send you on archaeological themed quests

Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life has one, and the DS game Nostalgia is about a boy venturing out to find his father who is one. That's all I got I think.

I think his name is Harry. He had a Gamecube game with that name at least.

Uh no, there are no archaeologists in Jurassic Park.

You're thinking of paleontologists, who study all prehistoric life with the specific exception of morphologically modern humans, whereas archaeologists study human life starting from the development of stone tools. There is some overlap between the two, but stuff like dinosaurs or any other prehistoric life beside humans is really a paleontologists field, not an archaeologists'.

Yep, indeed, I checked and it is correct.
But sadly Pitfall will make it the second list I will create.
Right now in the first list will be:

-Tomb Raider
-La-Mulana
-Indiana Jones
-Professor Layton
-Doctor Lautrec
-Unchared
-Unearthed
-Warcraft
-Exhumed/Power Slave [not the hentai....but there is a hentai game with an archaeologist...I will put her later...*lick icecream*]
-Spelunky!

I have many other games for the second List and I thank you all for that!!!

You're not an archeologist in Exhumed/Power Slave though, at least not in the console versions. You're a guy who "has been chosen from a group of the best operatives in the world to infiltrate Karnak and destroy the threatening forces" after Karnak is taken over by monsters. Though Indiana Jones does have a joke cameo in a group shot of "the best operatives in the world" at the start.

Also I dunno I love Locke as much as the next guy but does a treasure hunter really count as an Archeologist? On that note you could probably look for some archeologists in Wild ARMs and maaaaybe Chrono Trigger?

PS- I dunno if Pitfall Harry counts as an archeologist or a treasure hunter but he was once voiced by Bruce Campbell and Jack Black was in the commercial for his first game, which makes him pretty neat. Also if you want just treasure hunters what about Panama Joe/Pedro from Montezuma's Revenge?

Oh, wow, I didn't knew about that. I had the impression the hero in Power Slave was at least a Treasure Hunter. I will check myself later.
Well, maybe the list will become "Achaelogists/Treasure Hunters List"? I don't know....
Also which character in Chrono Trigger is an Achaelogists?

Maybe he is in the PC version, that's supposed to be significantly different from the consoles.
None of the main characters in Chrono Trigger are archeologists though there might be an NPC who is, don't recall. There's a lot of archeological stuff going on though, like when they travel to the post-apocalyptic future and go through the futuristic ruins, with Lucca eventually repairing a robot they find in them, who becomes a party member. Never played all the way through Wild ARMs but one of the characters was definitely a treasure hunter-type. And there was a lot buildup for ancient robots that archeologists had been digging up.

I at last finished the first part for the Archaeologists/Fortune Hunters in Videogames. Youc an see it here:

http://www.listal.com/list/archaeologists-videogames-part-1

I think I found material to create 2 more Lists! Stay tune for more in the future.

Also do you have a suggestion for another kind of list like that to make.
Cheers!!!!

I'm pretty sure Toma could be considered an archeologist in Chrono Trigger - he's the one you can talk to early on that tells you about the Rainbow Shell, and then you pour some soda/booze on his gravestone later on and his ghost explains more about the Rainbow shell. Honestly I don't think the word "archeologist" is ever used, but he fits the trope.

You can also be an Archeologist in Dungeons of Dredmor - you start the game with a fedora equipped, and can turn unwanted artifact items into experience

Apart from that, pretty sure most of the examples I could name are already here, although I'm SURE there are at least several archeologist types in each of the Elder Scrolls Game. There really has to be.

IF you use the proper meaning behind the word "archaeologist"....then there are none in any video game I've ever seen.

Nathan Drake, Lara Croft, etc, are all what we (archaeologists) would call a pothunter, treasure hunter, or graverobber. I am not aware of any character in a videogame who performs proper (i.e. careful, ordered, methodical) archaeological excavations of historic material or, in fact, does anything but somehow find mysteriously well preserved tombs and proceed to despoil them by removing anything that catches their eye, thus destroying the cultural significance and information that could be gained by a careful study of said artifacts in their original context.

Real archaeology is so different from what you see portrayed in Tomb Raider that it makes me horrified and sad. The game's even called TOMB RAIDER. Ridiculous.

Sources: Degree in anthropology (with focus in archaeology subfield and history), experience on archaeological excavations.
