Are 2-player local co-op games going down in popularity?

During the last generation of consoles, quite a few games had local co-op. Ratchet and Clank: Deadlocked, Timesplitters, Dynasty Warriors, and many other games had local co-op. Split screen co-op has been eschewed in favor of online co-op in the new generation of games, with few good local co-op games. The last good one I have played is Resistance FoM. Are there any signs of this gametype going back up in appeal?

Of course they're losing appeal. Why play local co-op with the annoying little kid from next door when you can play online with some Mexican who can beat the game with his toes?

Best line ever in my time here.

OT: Maybe. Borderlands has co-op, I think. CoD:WaW was quite good apart from the smaller screen thing and Halo 3 is good as well. But it is being phased out slowly.

I really hope it doesn't "die out". You can have so much fun with a friend...

Unfortunately, the biggest death seems to have been in PC gaming. I can count the number of local-MP games on the PC with one hand.

Thankfully, Trine is one of them. If you got that game without a spare controller, you're DOING IT WRONG.

Maybe a few people have friends that they invited over (Sounds crazy, right?) and they don't want to afford two consoles just to be able to play with their friends. So... it shouldn't die out, it should still be kept, just not forced.

It doesn't have anything to do with the fact that people don't want local co-op. On the contrary, most people want offline co-op and, god forbid, 4 player split screen. However to do that would take all the tools and skills used only as recently as the 90's, and you know how the video game industry hates using new technology for silly reasons like that :)

After all, why sell 1 player a game that 4 people can play for $60 when you can charge 4 people $60 and charge 3 new people for game consoles. You've went from $60, to $1100. See, you get 1040 more dollars and no drawbacks! Oh what's that? This pisses consumers off? I wonder why?

seeems as though games have gone through a stage where co-op has been done to death..
there are a lot of bad co-ops out now that are bringing it out of popularity

Gears, Halo, Borderlands, Resident Evil...
I think we're okay for now, but yes, some games beg for local Co-op and doesn't have it.
(Looking at you, Saints Row 2!)

I do not like Split Screen co-op since no close relative of mine have my consoles nor have any talent in gaming. Plus, it makes my gaming experience cut down in half (literally my tv screen).

Oh, and single player modes or any game which have single player modes as their main should NOT have any co-op (unless you have a partner AI *cough*Res 5*cough*) nor have any attempts at making a Multiplayer mode which is unoriginal, broken in balance, and average at best. Reasons behind this asspull might be that they want the game to live by patching it up with annoying updates of the multiplayer as well as of course make you buy something online.

They should instead try to create an excellent and lengthy story-mode with plenty of replayability and extras. If the story mode has excellent and fun gameplay as well as other stuff, any sane gamer would always go back for more no matter how much it ages (e.g. God of War 2).

Local co-op is a different experience to online multi play. There's nothing wrong with wanting to have some beers with a mate and play some Halo on split screen. Just as there's nothing wrong with staying in a dark room on a Friday night grinding through a WoW instance with 4 other people on Ventrilo. Wait ...
