Are comics about gamer-guys cliched and played out, or are there any new groundbreakers?

Comics are one of my favorite diversions, either reading them, or just looking at the artwork. There are several comic strips I enjoy that follow the whole "snarky attitude ridden loser gamer scorns the world while looking for love". Some of these are definitely readable, but over the years, why has there been such an influx of strips in this genre? What makes each one unique enough to have a growing fanbase, or are the amount of hits on some of these sites indicators of quality, or perhaps only testament to the phenomenon that is the internet. Does anyone out there think the genre has had it? Who knows of some originals out there? Maybe I'm just out to lunch and don't even know what I'm talking about here, but I think I might be on to something...

A Nice big list! [http://www.blastwavecomic.com/index.php?p=link]

Unless you mean...comic books, then I'm sorry to waste your time with these webcomics.

EDIT: I Believe I mis-read this thread- but whatever, I will keep the list up there.

Yes just so everyone knows I meant that I love comics in all forms but my intent is to discuss them in "strip form" revolving around the mentioned genre. THANKS FOR THE LIST

Well, there can never be too many, but I think the artists that make them should be a little considerate... Take Gone With the Blastwave for example, he hasn't updated in, what? 15 months?

Yes, the "crazy gamer suddenly finding girl gamer" is a little used, but as long as the story is otherwise entertaining, I don't see a problem with it (CAD, Fanboys).

Maybe a little OT, but I was thinking the other day that you can do a 4 panel strip each day, but instead of single pictures for each panel you can load 5 second video clips. With bandwidth what it is today, it would take no time to load and would make a great alternative for web comic readers.

This is because, as I recall, he has, in rapid succession, been drafted, albeit briefly, then had to go back to work. Unlike many cartoonists, he does not depend on the comic for a livelihood.

He IS, however, updating this month. Which is cool.

And yes, I did join just to say that.

Megatokyo for once is cool. Like both guys are gamers while one of them is the hulky type wannabe and the other one plays with a girl skin and is a total weeaboo. And yes wireless sucks for when you run out of battery power and get majorly pwned :p. I also like it how every other day he has a different T-shirt like 'l33t h4xx0r' or 'j00 r d34d f00' etc.

I don't mind stereotypes in comics. Plus I believe everyone who calls himself a gamer should have played Half Life 1 single player and multiplayer. Games like Quake 3 Unreal Tournament Star Wars Ep1: Racer Star Craft Diablo 2 - Battle NET represent an era of gaming that literary defined what gaming is. Imagine a comic with a gamer character based on Current GEN references. It won't be funny simply because most people won't know what the references are about. It'd be a WoW HAlo3 junkie with a t-shirt that reads "RED vs BLUE" or "GMod - craftin' 4 life." or something else nobody gives a shit about. It's like trying to redefine what 'hippie' means on the base of whatever hippie movements are there today.

The gamer character has already been defined by the golden era of gaming and I mean that by the fact that for a short period of time the technological boost was just right with the level of exploitation of the games medium that all the new ideas available were both achievable from a technological standpoint and original since nobody had done them before.

While that age has passed and we are currently in a stagnation of mediocrity through franchise exploitation and an endless deja-vu of "just the same FPS as last time but with better graphics and maybe a replenish-able armor meter" no current game can bring about any new stereotype simply because there are too many too similar games on a market flooded by game-play lookalikes and the only thing that stands out are the absolute popularity hits like the Halo games and WoW for example.

Also, from Gone with the Blastwave's newspost a while ago:

"If you need a reason why it took so long to update, I have about 5 of them. But the shortest answer is "lack of interest".
I've said it alot of times:
This comic is not my job nor a real passion. It's fun, but not THAT fun. Frequent 'periods of inactivity' are just how it all works out. Blastwave won't end untill it is done."

Which is his right, of course. He promised nobody a set amount of comics on set planning of days, and we're not paying him by the comic. Until I get an email from him saying "Thanks for the paycheck, I'll be sure to update three times a week" I don't think I can complain about his updating schedule, I should be happy enough the comics he made are that awesome.

But enough of that tangent.

I'm gonna plug a recommendation to the Order of the Stick [http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html]. The best comic on the net or in printed form.

Seconded. I'll promote Dork Tower [http://archive.gamespy.com/comics/dorktower/archive.asp?nextform=viewcomic&id=345], Nodwick [http://nodwick.humor.gamespy.com/gamespyarchive/index.php?date=2001-03-27] and Weregeeks [http://www.weregeek.com/2006/11/27/] as gaming webcomics based on table-top gaming (warning: the first two have archives of approximately seven years).

What we need is more webcomics like xkcd or DoubleFine Action because thy emulate hilarious situations and fun happening that mostly don't need prior knowledge, video games or inside jokes. (xkcd programming jokes aside)
