Are Crusader Kings or Warlock worth it?

Well, Crusader Kings is on sale today, so I just ended up buying both. It's £11.50 in total, so why not? Thanks to everyone for the input, I really appreciated it. I'll hold off Warlock for now as suggested - even though it sounds fun, it might be better to get it with the expansion(s) when they come out.

Crusader Kings 2 is an excellent game. There's a bit of a steep learning curve, though, and the UI isn't always terrible player-friendly. It's at its best when things are spiraling out of control and all your well laid plans are in ruins because your widely loathed, bastard son has poisoned the heir and thrown the entire country into civil war.

Warlock is fun and pretty and has lots of potential, but is currently laboring under the weight of some truly titanic balance issues. Once you know what to do, it's a simple matter of gaming the stunningly inept AI.

Personally I prefer it to EU for that simple added random factor from all the characters the game keeps track of. Seeing that someone had your Spymaster killed is one thing, finding out it was done by the his replacement's wife is quite another (and certainly adds to his qualification for the job).

But how can you ever trust the original Spymaster's replacement knowing that his wife is a backstabbing *****?

I'm pretty sure I'm doing it all wrong.

Good rule of thumb I've heard, and ended up doing myself when starting, is start a game with one of the Irish counties. It's small and quiet enough to let you do your thing at your own pace, and any mistakes you make aren't as costly. Extra distance from any Jihads and the Golden Horde (when they show up) is also a major plus. There's also no shortage of tutorials or video/written LPs across the webs to help you out in that too, so watch/read a bit, try out what you saw in Ireland, rince repeat.

I'll give that a shot, plus I'll have about an hour of uninterrupted reading time tomorrow where I'll be able to focus on the manual and I'm searching youtube for Let's Plays as we speak.

Trust is such a strong word, as I prefer to see it as keeping a skilled member of my court happy so they do go using those skills against me.

It's not the most in depth wiki I've seen (by a long shot), but the written LPs it links you to are in the Paradox forums, which isn't a bad place to snoop around for tips and stuffs.

Thanks for the info and links, I'm sure I'll be relying heavily on some of that stuff for at least the first few games. Hopefully things'll calm down a bit around here and I'll be able to actually play the game a bit in the next couple of days.
