Graphics stopped being ugly towards the end of the last console generation. There's no need for games to look as good as they do now, it's just overkill.
..right. "16-bit is more than enough", hm? lol I hate the internet.
16-bit??? We should have stopped at 8. That is when games were games and women were women.

Graphics are just as important as gameplay, story and whatever else. There isn't one little aspect that make a game great. It is the sum of all the parts that make it great.

Yeah, graphics matter. These are video games after all.

I don't know when this whole trend started, to be honest. It certainly seems like it's "trendy" to hate graphics. If we're talking about games that suck to begin with, then yeah, graphics don't matter because the game sucks, period. No amount of graphics will make a shitty game be any less shitty.

However, if we're dealing with good games with good concepts, then yeah, I want my graphics to be the best they possible can without detracting from the original experience.

Better tech, and the proper usage of it is kind of the whole point of gaming in general. It's kind of like arguing that game physics are not needed, as it's nearly a "graphics" idea in comparison. Clever physics are not going to matter when we're dealing with 2D art and sprites. If a game can utilize graphics, physics, sound and everything else to it's fullest extent, then I'm going to certainly enjoy that game.

I don't know?... I think it all depends on the game. I can let bad graphics slide if it's backed up by extremely good gameplay. Now if the games are old games... I don't ***** about graphics because I wasn't expecting them to be good when compared to modern games.

Some of the best games I've ever played have terrible graphics. And sometimes, bad graphics can actually make games better. Yahtzee's Chzo Mythos games would suck so bad if the graphics were better. And Monkey Hero.

Ask yourself this question: Would a game with the most epic story and longest gameplay every, be alright, even when the graphics looks as atrocious as paper-cut-outs?

The truth is no. Even me, who has low-standard by graphical terms would get turned off by horrible graphics.

However, that is not to say Paper Mario, Braid, Trine and a few other games which weren't graphical power-houses didn't have some kind of STYLE to them.

So yeah, people can deny it as much as they want, but graphics will always have a certain amount of weight, especially one games, sine they're part of it, and not an extension like in movie.

If they're good, great! If they're bad, fine. As long as the graphics aren't so bad that they either remove from the game or interfere with the game, it doesn't matter.

It does make me miffed when Sony fanboys go on a rant "OMFG! KILLZONE 3 WILL BE BETTER THAN HALO REACH BECAUSE IT HAS BETTER GRAPHICS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111" and claim that something will be better because it has better graphics. As is, the PS3 graphics are nice, but aren't enough of an improvement over 360 graphics to matter. Plus, you're still hard pressed to find a studio that can properly animate faces and hands, so you know, w/e.

I still play the old polygon-infested FFVII, flat FFIX, Chrono Cross, and Legend of the Dragoon. Graphics really shouldn't make or break a game at all. Graphics should help add into the environments of a game's theme like the painted look for Okami, the rigid view for TWEWY, the anime-style for Lux Pain and Persona, or the lush, deep environments for the new FF games.

Compare resident evil to its remake and tell me graphics don't matter... But then again, compare morrowind to its sequel and tell me that graphics are the most important thing... I don't know what to believe. maybe developers should just make everything quality?

To an extent, graphics can be very important. They set the mood of the game and they determine gameplay. Imagine a bright, pastel-shaded Silent Hill, or a 2 dimensional Halo. On the other hand, if you just mean numbers of shaders and picture resolution and texture quality and all that, graphics mean absolutely nothing.
