Are mainstream devs deliberately discouraging women from gaming?

I totally get what women see in guys like George Clooney.
Why would anyone who considers George Clooney attractive in any way play fantasy games in the first place...?
Because some people find George Clooney attractive, and also want to hit things with swords in a computer game?

I would absolutely love to hear who you think considers George Clooney attractive and why they wouldn't want to play fantasy games.

You seem to have a lot of secret knowledge. Please share it with us!

I think George Clooney is very handsome (and classy in a way a lot of the younger movie stars aren't) and I play fantasy games :p

I don't know guys. I think George Clooney made a terrible Batman. He loses serious sexy points for that.

I think I'll pass to avoid a potential cataclysmic scenario.

It's suddenly dawning on me that this forum seems largely populated by what appear to be 50-year-olds obsessed with political correctness and reality at large.

Weirdest gaming forum ever.

That isn't to say it doesn't belong, but rather to say I clearly don't belong in it.

He gave someone a refund for said film out of his own money therefore he regains one sexy point.

Oh come on we aren't that bad, these things need to be talked about :3 I'm sure there is a place for you here.

As for the subject at hand I think I feel like devs are kind of hiding behind history at the moment. Women were treated badly in the past so therefore if we make a game that is set in a ye olde tyme place we can treat them like dirt and get away with it (even if it clearly isn't Earth) not sure if they are doing it deliberately or its just some abhorrent side effect.

Another thing that I would like devs to understand is that sexism makes women feel exactly the same way as racism makes people feel. So they should be as careful with using it in their games.

There are plenty of video game forum places to go to if you don't know very much about sociology and just want to complain about "political correctness" as if it is some vague threat that goes bump in the night.

There's plenty of places where you can go and complain about women and people of color and gay people and how they want to ruin your fun by having the audacity to ask for better representation of themselves.

And ironically, it's 50 year old conservatives like Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly who love talking about how terrible "political correctness" is.

That seems to be the ideological company you keep.

Lately I have noticed that female gamers are being discouraged for all sorts of reasons.

Assassins Creed 3 said that a female protagonist wouldn't fit into the period of the game (yet a Native American would be acceptable and wouldn't rouse suspicion wherever he went?).

Kingdoms of Amalur treats the female character like she is a man (constant flirts from female characters) to the extent where she is forced to marry a women if she wants to complete a quest line, there is no option to just say 'No' and complete the quest that way.

.
thats bullshit....not when you have female assasins running around, Assasins creed is a prime candidte for a female protagonist...they just lack the balls/effort to do it
agreed on all this.

i just think it's more of an afterthought, or sometimes (like with the witcher) it fits the lore? (although, now that i think about it...i'd love playing a female witcher, being a badass female in a world like that.) also, in AC3, I really don't see why having a female protagonist wouldn't work..if the person is native american, then being female in that era would have the same connotation regardless.

meh...then again, i'm a dude, i always play as a dude usually (not that i don't play games with female protagonist, just what i prefer to RP as since i'm a dude.) so i guess i don't have the same angsty drive over it as I do with some other issues. not to say females don't have a say in the industry, but I do think it's still a very male populated/ran industry.

I agree, I wish there were more good female characters to play/talk about. I think it's a little bit sad that a majority of the "good" female characters are RPG protagonists, so they're written as sex neutral anyways or just have a female voicing over the lines written for a male character, as opposed to female characters who are good characters and are meant to be females from the beginning. Nothing wrong with the likes FemShep but I can't help but feel she's only good because she's a male character with lady skin on.

We just need more Kerrigans and Alyxs and Alexes

agreed on all this.

given is historical setting I would be more than happy to let it go...if it werent for the fact that females obviously had some kind of role in the brotherhood (as I said)

I often do think "haha..silly women, doing things is for MEN" if you get that token "women who does things" in alot of historical stuff

but yeah...I mean a female assasin who has to deal with the sexism...has to work extra ahrd to prove her worth as an assasin...can you imagine how awsome that would be?!

...yeah its abit of an angry feminists wet dream I guess...

EDIT: if this guy is native american..well I guess thats somthing more or less interesting

it'd be interesting to say the least, hell i think they could really make it good. (have a couple storyline issues pop up due to the fact that she is female, or perhaps make a quirky 4th wall breaking joke such as "why couldn't I have been male like all other intriguing heroes.."(a joke, a joke of course.) )

i think it's a more than fair "wet dream", just like a said, unfortunate the industry isn't...set out to please anyone but the supposed demograph of "hurr durr hurr MUSCLE MILK! STEROIDS! HULK SMASH COD! HULK PAY FOR GAMES AND ALL DLC." (not a stab at anyone who enjoy's cod, just saying that's the demograph that is sought after for money.)

No, until you actually present me with real proof, your argument is worthless.
although Im probably preaching to the choir here...what women and men find attractive is quite different

Nostalga chick did a video "top 10 hottest animated guys" and it was sort of an interesting look into what women find attractive

for example..tarzan..hercules..youd think they would be rather desirable right?

aparently acording to the list they arnt as sexy as Frollo from hunchback of notre dame (no I am not kidding) yeah..women want a peice of that wrinkled ass

now I would wager that the frollo lovers are in the minority (thankfully)....but I guess the traits they find attractive are like...hes all conflicted..and brooding.and intense and...yeah I dotn know

as Nhick said...women want a project..they dont want Gaston, they want the beast (fur and all)

OR to put it another way I would wager tha Garrus was a more popular romance option than Jacob...Garruss..who looks like a velociraptor and his seed will kill you

I mean I can say in all honesty I find thane more desirable than Jacob

the guys from gears of war are a 14 year old boys wet dream...not a womems

I dunno. I think the whole supply and demand thing will balance things out as the female demographic grows.

Though I have argued before there's nothing wrong with having a "guys game" just like I don't think there's anything wrong with having a "guys movie".

It's just that right now there's too many.

Shall we take a look at the logic?

Large male gaming demographic > dev makes game tailored to guys (sexist/boobies everywhere etc)> female gamers say 'hmm okay that's not for me/ I don't feel comfortable' > Large male demographic > game devs say 'see we were right to make it for guys girls don't play games!'.

Repeat.

It's just a horrible self perpetuating cycle :/

I dotn think ti always has to be "this is for boys" and "this is for girls"

most of the time anything specifically for girls is crap...

anyway blockbuster movies and even games have more of a "universal" apeal...it is slightly skewed towards guys BUT its still apealing enough for almost anyone to enjoy (think dark knight or inception)

One reason I see for developers to make male main characters is because most games are heavily involved in combat, an activity that women are less likely to partake then men. Not that they can't they just don't, so having a larger number of women doing what women don't regularly do may seem like pandering. Not that I would see it like that, since I'm tired of hyper manly men doing hyper manly men things, but an equal number of m/f in an area where that isn't so would be a little odd.
