Edit: It took you five years to get a black belt? That course must be -really- easy...
At the Taekowndo studio I trained in on average it took at least 7 years to get to black belt, where as most of the TKD studios in the are did it in three years or less and they were inferior. If I had gone to them I would have obtained a black belt.
Again, that seems far too short to get a black belt. In my Kenpo school, it was roughly eleven years minimum. You could have all the skill in the world and my shihan wouldn't give a damn. You needed the experience, and you also needed to completely understand the philosophy behind what you where doing. Any less, and you couldn't past the test you had to take for your next belt.
Did people from your gym have advantages over people of the same belt class from other gyms? Also,if you group against someone from a higher belt class from a lazy gym you have to bow to them even if they are inferior to you in skill.
It has absolutely nothing to do with skill what so ever. If you did not understand when and where to use your techniques, nor could you demonstrate that not only your body improved, but your mind and spirit had as well, you didn't get the belt. Most schools for Martial Arts in America have long forgotten that a belt is not something entitled to you, it is something earned. It is not simply earned through skill at arms alone, either.

Yes, I might have to bow to a blackbelt from another school... but so what? I have to bow to the white belts too. Its called respect, and its a basic tenet of martial arts. If I refused to show that to anyone, I doubt I'd still be a member of my dojo.

Martial arts classes are good for getting aerobic activity, since most classes have you do a lot of running and sparring.

It should come in handy if you get mugged. Unless the mugger has a gun.

I just use it for exercise, and it's great in that regard. Chi flow and all that. Otherwise, I don't call enough attention to myself to actually dispense it on anyone.

krav maga, that jewish martial art, is used by the israelian army, and they are some though sons of bitches ill say
Seconded.
Seems to be by far the most practical of the martial arts.
Every martial art will teach you self-discipline, probably get you in shape, and be good all around. But Krav seems to be the one that will be most useful in a real situation.
