The wrench in bioshock is, well against Big Daddys anyway.

Seriously, it's the best weapon to use on them :)

and the only game to ever fck this up was Halo..
I agree with that. I don't know if Halo was the only one because I haven't played too many FPS's, but Bungie sure did screw that one up.

After that one patch in Halo 2 that made melee more powerful (continuing into Halo 3), it changed the entire dynamic of the multiplayer game, turning large sections of it into crap.

It's almost like a dance move, walking down a corridor shooting medium-powered guns at each other until you're both close to each other, then methodically tapping B furiously, then jumping back and attempting to shoot if the opponent somehow lived.

Before that there was a lot more strategy with cover and grenades, especially on small indoor levels.

did OP get knifed, teabaged, pwnd, then is now coming on a forum to complain?
It's not that knives are overpowered, normal guns are underpowered in games
Honestly, you think you can still run around from bullets in your limbs and torso? Even if you can still move (ignoring the pain/blood loss) you'd lose use of a limb at least! Games brush off non-lethal wounds like "Oh i'll re-spawn a leg in a sec, just gimmie a med kit"

Depends.

In most games Melee isn't overpowered because getting up to someone to melee them in the first place is suicide. Take TF2 or Counter-Strike for instances. If you're at Melee range, most of the time you should be dead already. Thus it becomes a humiliation weapon, more so than a powerful weapon.

In MW2 it is overpowered, simply because it's not melee so much as a one-hit kill projectile that can be coupled with the "LOLIMPENETRABLESHIELD!".

The use of Knives also doesn't make a lick of sense in modern games against fully armored personnel, as knives are entirely useless on Kevlar. Especially thrown knives. You'd have to put your entire weight and force behind a stab to pierce the body armor. A thrown knife is less effective against a fully armored soldier nowadays than a thrown rock.

They are. The knife I can believe and being hit by a Halo Assault Rifle from behind will likely put you down, but it's when a pistol whip to the finger kills you that it becomes stupid.
It's helpful for those playing high difficulties or breezing through but reality has been sacrificed.
As much as i don't like the game, Half-Life 2 had it right with the Crowbar. A few hits but no ammo needed.

in the case of GoW if it takes time to Melee kill someone, you should be able to take damage while doing the act. As far as Melee, its should be 1 hit kills, if you manage to get close enough you deserve your reward.

Now if the Riot Shield was a 1 hit kill THAT would be overpowered ^-^ but as of now its good.

Bum rushing some1 while he is shooting you will more often kill you. but if u survive the bullets reap the reward that is the insta-kill.

Some games where it's actually easy to approach an enemy and kill them with a melee weapon, it should have been called "First person melee-ing"

The only examples of overpowered melee weapons I can think of is the knife in CoD4 & MW2 and the Crowbar in the Half-Life 2 games.

Well, the lancer in GOW makes sense, after all, a chainsaw to your body WOULD be lethal. Whereas a knife, well depends where you hit it to be honest. But if it was underpowered, it would be useless and not used, so you can understand why they made them so powerful.

I take knifing and lancers as I go, sometimes I go whole matches without using them sometimes all my kills are done by them, for example:
playing COD4 with my friends, I only use the knife if we've bumped into each other.
Gears 2 I was playing a match against another team (I think it was warzone) And I play Gears 2 terribly, anyway I ran around the side of a van, Locust in my face so I chainsaw him before he has a chance to hit me.
Then I jump over a wall cover directly in front of another locust and lancer him to...There was some abuse shouted down the mic but as far as i'm concerned it was fair game.
What I don't do is rush about revving my chainsaw.
I think they're there to be used as a "Quick response" rather than a main weapon.

I dont think they are overpowered. If you its someone with a crowbar in real life they dont tend to warrent another hit, unless you got them in the leg or somthing

Well you have to get in close and hit.So it's all evened out by the fact that the enemy will probably be shooting at you.

The melee weapons are one of the reasons TF2 is bad. Not that high-damage melee weapons are always bad, but they do require certain kinds of mechanics in order to make sense. You can't just throw them in and expect them to not fuck up your game.

half life made a reasonably powerd melee weapon but fcked it up by giving you a gun that regenerates ammo so you never have to use it

The Eyelander in TF2 is overpowered at the moment. It has the biggest melee range, it is pretty much instant kill, and it gives the demoman using it a health and speed boost. The only disadvantage is a small drop in max health that can be regained by killing with the Eyelander anyway. It will probably be fixed soon, but as of writing it is overpowered.

As long as they don't have lunge, they are fine.
You ever heard of an Eagle Strike (thats what I call it) in CoD:WaW? The bayonets have a lunge attack and if you jump and attack, you will fly toward your enemy and they have no chance of stopping it unless they knife at the right moment, its incredibly hard to dodge also. Lucky that Im the only one that uses it. (oh shit, my secret is out)

games where your a bullet sponge melee weapons should never 1 hit kill.

they need to make melee a rifle butting affair not a knife. Who in there right mind wont use there rifle butts first instead of the time consuming action of pulling out a knife. however, if you can pull a knife out than yes by all means have it one hit kill. Killzone and Halo did this. Tho in Halo the slight lunge u get isn't fair :p

It's pretty fair. If someone is capable of getting next to you in a game all about guns and explosives, you pretty much screwed up and deserve the severed spinal cord. Shoot them before they stab you, you really, really have range on them.
This. The advantage that guns have in range is balanced by the insta-kill of the melle.

Personally I find the thrown knife ridiculous, since it removes the whole point of the knife's power

In the CoD games, I don't mind the fact that it's an instant kill. What gets me is when people either charge you without even bothering with their gun, or camp around a corner and knife whenever someone passes them.
I think the range of the throwing knife in MW2 is balanced by it being very difficult to aim, only having one of them and it replacing your grenades.
