Modern Warfare 2 makes meleeing to friggin easy. Tactical knife with the commando perk lets you insta stab someone from halfway across rust.....okay maybe not but it's still friggi...sorry...fuckin annoying.............I also use it myself but that's beside the point.

No, usually when you get a kill you have to sneak up on them with the knife (at least in MW and MW2 you do). Although the energy sword in Halo 2&3 is really cheap because of the lunge attack.

No knives - No bullshit.
Guns are lethal enough.
THIS!!!

also in MW2, the shotguns as secondary weapons are just cheap, the AA-12 which you unlock within a few hours is the most unfair secondary weapon in the game in my opinion. Pair it with scavenger, which you also unlock within an hour or so, and you have yourself no need for a primary because your secondary is so OP.

Well statics do show that your average butter knife is 3x more lethal than a .50 Caliber bullet through your heart...

Definitely not in CoD, because if you can't kill someone running at you with a knife in a game where three bullets to the crotch is a guaranteed kill, you deserve to die. And if someone sneaks up on you with a knife they could have just as easily shot you and it would yield pretty much the same result. Maybe in gears, because you have to unload a whole clip into your enemy before they go down, but gears is really unbalanced anyways, being as they start you off with a power weapon. But if you don't count the shotgun as a melee weapon then it's debatable, because you can stop a lancer with a shotgun fairly easily.

He's talking about the Bee Gun in the original. It shot bees.
I thought so, but it didn't make sense. The Bee Gun was useless. 10 "bees" and they were pretty useless, at least for me. I had more fun with the Barnacle Gun :D

Oh right, Opposing Force. I totally should have played that by now, but the installer keeps ballsing up. So yah.

Also, the Bee Gun is rubbish. It's no Quake axe still.

The knife in MW2 is an absolute joke, so in certain games, yes.

If they weren't overpowered, they would be pretty worthless.

Plus it's fun to stab someone to death.
Is being balanced too much to ask then?
I don't know what your definition of "balanced" is, but I don't see how a melee weapon that is completely worthless is supposed to be considered balanced.

In games like TF2 where close combat guns can rip you to shreds and you need to be melee 5 times on highest health classes?NO.

In games like L4D2 where the enemies don't have guns, and the melee weapons can kill a zombie hulk 6 times faster then an asault rifle?Yes.
.... gentlemen

For example, being able to leap forwards 2-3 meters at the single touch of a button and kill someone from any angle with a single knife swing whilst not having to actually aim directly at that target, that is not exactly balanced.
