We are talking of better remakes and nobody has brought up Hellsing Ultimate yet? That one basically blew the original anime out of the water.

Does Casino Royale count? I haven't seen many movie remakes, and the ones I have, I haven't seen the original.
You silly sod, there wasn't any Casino Royale films made prior to the one with Craig! *in denial*

I looked up some good remakes and found that The Departed was actually a remake of some random movie called Infernal Affairs. Can't imagine Infernal Affairs was anywhere near as good as The Departed... but I could be wrong as I haven't seen it :D

Scarface, The Crazies, True Grit, The Departed, Little Shop of Horrors, The Thing, The Fly, Twelve Monkeys, 3:10 to Yuma, and more recently Fright Night. Yes, remakes can be greater than or equal to the quality of the original. It just depends on the hands the material is put in.

And for those saying Dawn of the Dead.... just.... no.

I like the reboots of the old slasher films. Why? Because they might have been horror/slasher back in the day, but now they are really, really bad. At least the latest Elm Street has actors closer to their characters age, not a late twenty something playing a thirteen year-old.

I thought the newer Dawn Of The Dead was way better that George A. Romero's one.
The only problem I had with the remake of Dawn was the running zombies. They only belong in 28 Later movies, because those are angry people, not the walking/running dead. Actual zombies do not run, it is impossible.

Back on track, I thought Dawn was a really good movie. I was surprised that I was somewhat attached to more characters than just Ving Rahmes because he is awesome and has a shotgun. The soundtrack was brilliant, the pacing was spot on...only thing that ruined it for me was running zombies.

Lolita, as much as I love Kubrick's work Adrian Lyne's version is just better and more faithful to the original text.

The Thing, Dawn of the Dead, were really really good. I can't say I've seen too many remakes but it is really sad when they butcher them.

I mean really can you really say the original Dawn of the Dead was anywhere near as good as the new one? The old one was just hilariously bad, in my opinion anyway, had a hangout where we were mostly laughing at it, or our own stupidity.

As far as my personal experience goes, no.

Evil Dead 2 > Evil Dead.
Evil Dead 2 is a sequel.
It's a sequel/remake.
Sequel/remake? I guess it can be both. An attempt to make the first one again, but setting it after the first one. Not a full 'remake' in my opinion.

The Producers, yes. and The Parent trap. Aw, remember when Lindsay Lohan was cute? It was my sister's favourite film for years.

The Resident Evil REmake managed to turn RE 1 from a laughable, not-scary game into an utterly terrifying one. I'd call that a victory for remakes.
Yes, definitely. Plus it added the best sub-plot in the Resident Evil series, one that doesn't look like it was written by a 8 year old. This time by a 14 year old. But still, a slight improvement!

Apart from that, I hesitate to say True Grit is a remake as it's more another adaptation of the book. It's not like they remade the John Wayne version, they did the book.
