Are the days of split screen multiplayer dying out?

It seems that way sometimes, and really, there's no excuse for it. Online play is great, and I applaud developers who are willing to put the time and effort into adding a robust online mode to their game, but if you tell me I can't play a multiplayer game with my sibling who's sitting on the couch next to me, you've just lost me as a customer.

I wish more games would take the cue from bungie and allow split screen online. I enjoy being able to play online with people next to me as well as friends across the state.

Me and my mates still have regular N64 sessions with some SSB, Goldeneye and Mariokart tournaments. Heck we even break out the Pokemon Stadium (complete with Red Blue and Yellow) from time to time.

Wish more new games came with a 4 player, single console option though. the ol' 64's looking dated on the HD tellys.

Only when you're not playing around a friend's house

It's online all the time, until we all decide to meet up around someone's house

We also play games that HAVE no splitscreen, such as SSBB, but the point still stands

Dying off? No. Being killed off? Absolutely.

Why the hell would a game developer spend time making a game where one person could buy it and allow 4 people to play when the developer would rather have all 4 people need to buy a disk each to play?

Why would a console manufacturer encourage game developers to make games which can run 4 players at once, thereby selling one console for 4 gamers, rather than ask them to make it so that each of them need a console each?

Split-screen is going the way of the single player campaign.

It seems developers think we have no friends, and have to play with total strangers online these days. Split-screen is a major deciding factor for me when it comes to buying(or even renting) games. There's nothing better than gathering a few friends and whooping the AIs ass, or whooping each other.

Yeah I agreee with the being killed off theme.
The devs can make more money if they sell more games. Plus people will play online with there friends and many may see it as easier then meeting up.
Personally I miss LAN parties I always had a blast with friends on split-screen. And I still buy any decent split-screen game that comes out.

But sadly split-screen is very secondary now.

I love split-screen more than any other type of gaming

Online is good but you can get lag issues and the online players can be annoying pricks at time, so playing with your best mate in the same room, no lag issues, and no idiots, seems the best option to me.

However game developers, as online gaming can generate increased revenue, will obviously try to flush it out in return for more people buying their games, and they can wallow in their large amounts of wealth!

I like splitscreen more, but only if the screen is big enough. My friend hates playing more than two-person multiplayer at his house because the TV he uses is only about 2' or something.

i dont think so. modern warfare 2 pulled off split screen quite well in special ops. if games keep doing this, split screen will be around for a lot longer yet.

It always seemed strange to me because as television screens are getting bigger split screen multi-player isn't being implemented as often.

Split screen is always fun, playing Worms: Armageddon and Mario kart on the n64 just isn't the same on-line. It's convenient on-line, but there's just something missing.

but the 2 screens are so small and cramped.
Just wait within three years the list will get even smaller. Right now all we have is Gears, Halo, Brawl, MW2 and Little Big Planet. (Not counting movie games)

I enjoy splitscreen multiplayer, as it really enhances the fun, but many games these days seem to be going with the "use half your screen as a radar/blank space" approach. For example, I recently rented Lost Planet 2 (great single player campaign, by the way), and I was super excited to try playing it with my brother. Turns out, I couldn't stand it because I couldn't see anything on my screen. I ended up just playing single player, since there was hardly anyone online who wasn't japanese.

I rather play with them online since i can just log off anytime U right. I would have to walk or call my mom for a ride if I am at a friends house and my friends play call of duty which is really boring. Maybe if they didn't play call if duty I would have a different opinion

It is with unkempt irony that splitscreen gaming is dying out at the exact same rate at which televisions are becoming justifiably big enough to play it.

Oh how I laugh
