Are the days of split screen multiplayer dying out?

Yea I would say it is. whenever a friend does come over any more, I'm like "damn, half my screen is gone" although is does certainly help coordination. I would say that partying it up online and (don't laugh me off please) LAN parties are waaay better. also

Nope, they're already dead. They died when online gaming was available for consols.

Nope, splitscreen on maintstream games like gears and halo have very good splitscreen modes.

i dont think so. modern warfare 2 pulled off split screen quite well in special ops. if games keep doing this, split screen will be around for a lot longer yet.

but the 2 screens are so small and cramped.

everyone is online these days, and it seems more convinient to join your friends server than go to his house and vice-versa. But in some places namely worthless Trinidad & Tobago , we don't have that luxury
but is it dying out yet?

I personally enjoy split screen gaming, but it sadly seems developers have stopped putting it in their games now :C

It seems it is but at least you'll be able to actually SEE something now whereas split screen was always extremely limiting on vision.

The screens are small yes, but it's good not because of the screens, but because of the fact that you are with your friends, in the same room. You're not with random people from nowhere near you, but with people you can punch in the face and get away with it each time he kills you. That's the appeal.

Why can't we just combine slip screen and online play, not many games do that. It's quite disapointing.

Maybe but there are lots of games that still employ splitscreen. And even those that don't still managed to have co-op. I guess it's kind of an odd question to ask. I mean Splitscreen can be replaced by online but lots of games use Splitscreen and are not online by any sctretch of the means. Fps could lose splitscreen but not racing games, Adventure games, Action games, And many other types of games that would improve there gameplay with an extra friend on board. I mean even for FPs they still make lots of games thinking a friend might be sitting next to you and want to join in.

Upon retrospective thinking one might say no. Splitscreen won't disapear cause it fills a need that multiplayer can't fill. The ablility to have a better gameplay experience by having someone come over to your house and play it with you.

I hope to god not. Before xbox live, my best form of entertainment was split screen co-op/multiplayer. Hell, my fondest memories of gaming yonder ( I am pretty young, mind you) is playing Halo 1 side by side co-op with my brother. Even still, split screen is awesome when you invite people to your house. Smaller hud's be damned.

It is a shame as I only ever play multiplayer split-screen as my friends don't have the same consoles I do.

Split screen isn't exactly dying. It's more like an after thought. With internet connectivity being the way multiplayer is conducted today, that framework is emulated. But local-multiplayer is not a part of the framework, and so gets forgotten, or cut, more often than not. There are games that have it, and some even go for the golden 4-way split. But it's not as common with the internet, today.

Basically, yes, Splitscreen multiplayer options are becoming less and less common for the very reason publishers don't want 4 people to be able to play on one console with one copy of the game - it's much more profitable if all those people have to buy the game to be able to play it together.
Sure, there are still many shooters that feature 2 player co-op, but that's pretty much it with the exception of beat-em-ups, which live off their offline-multiplayer.

Well Iam not sure if splitscreen is hard to create but it seems since online is wider than what it was they are getting rid of it; some people might not have good connections.

The days of going around to a friend's house to play games are dwindling.

i enjoyed the arguements we used to have about screen watching everytime i or my friend suffered a rather brutal death or tasty headshot. Timesplitters Future perfect was my favourite for that lol

I'd love to play games with friends, but besides fighting games how many split-screen console games do we still get?
Borderlands and Timesplitters are the only ones I can think of right now and that's sad...
