Are the forums too strict?

I notice a lot of times on this forum I see people being put on probation or suspended for posts that I don't think deserve it at all. Maybe, they were a bit controversial or offensive, but its hard to please everyone when you want to simply speak your mind. I know some posts are downright worthy of bans and such and its good to clean up trolling. But, I just feel we have to tip toe around so much to avoid getting on probation/suspension/bans.

Criticize the post, not the poster. A simple rule many fail to follow, so they get slapped for it.

I think they aren't strict enough, I see a lot of advertising that goes unpunished, I see a lot of troll that goes unnoticed, I see a lot of flaming that goes unextinguished.

We can't talk about these things! They... have... eyes... everywhere!! Nowhere is safe!!

I actually haven't really noticed it being too much of a problem. It's also gratifying to see when someone who deserves to be banned actually gets banned.

Not really. You get the occasional screw up (Like that dude who was banned for admitting he was attracted to kids, but mentioning that he wouldn't ever touch one) but the vast majority of topics, if mature are allowed to be discussed.

Captcha: discussion fairvol

Appropriate.

Nope. This is one of the only communities that can stay civil (at least outside of R&P), and that's mostly because of how strict it is.

It generally seems pretty good around here but I see some stuff actioned that I feel shouldn't be, and some stuff not actioned that I feel should be. So overall it's pretty good. Great compared to most forums. *Cough* Blizzard *cough*

Oh well. Such is life.

I make a point of always clicking the links to posts that caused probations/suspensions mostly (to be honest) because those can be some of the funniest posts in the forums. As for moderators being overzealous, I can't say that I've seen that. Just about every penalized post that I've seen deserved it. Now, I do believe they give out warnings too easily (personal experience), but a warning isn't a serious reprimand, just a reminder of the rules so I don't feel too strongly about it.

Not at all. I've only been probated once by the autobot (apparently text in a spoiler tag doesn't count as posted words.) I've said a lot of mean spirited things but somehow avoid moderator wrath.

I think the forums are perfectly fine in terms of "strictness". It's nice to finally be on some forums where I'm not trolled to death on every post I make.

[sub]In b4 everyone trolls this post. lol[/sub]

I like how strict they are, it's what makes this community great.

EDIT:

I like how strict it is here. Makes people, you know, not act like total asshats.
Whoa, almost said the exact same thing.

Not strict enough. I've made at least 5 post with fapping jokes since my last suspension (For fapping jokes), and no punishment for it so far.

I can not let this stand.

I may not agree with every ban or suspension I see on here, but I appreciate the transparency of the whole "X was banned for this post" system. I figure it's the mods' site. We are guests in their house, and if they wanted to ban us for, say, mentioning cheese, they would be well within their rights.

What, am I the only one who thinks this place is TOO strict?

I'm not saying we should stand by and let the forums be overrun with trolls but I swear, people can be such sticks in the mud here...

I'm also irritated how about strict the Escapist is about debates/arguments.
No insulting? C'mon, it's what makes arguments FUN!

I mean, the MODS in neogaf are usually the biggest flamers there.

Not at all- the point of these suspensions and probations is to make sure that people stay courteous to eachother, and without them, the discussions would delve into idiocy.
In short: THANK YOU, ADMINS! YOU ROCK!

This isn't about "Fair" its about what the staff envision the forums to be.

And go read the rules; its mostly "Don't be a jerk, don't break the law and put some effort into it, and you're fine."
