Are the forums too strict?

What, am I the only one who thinks this place is TOO strict?

I'm not saying we should stand by and let the forums be overrun with trolls but I swear, people can be such sticks in the mud here...

I'm also irritated how about strict the Escapist is about debates/arguments.

No, arguments are what make arguments fun. When people start flinging insults, the argument often gets lost.

I may not agree with every ban or suspension I see on here, but I appreciate the transparency of the whole "X was banned for this post" system.

Me too. This, and badges for not incurring mods' wrath, allows you to judge if someone is worth listening to much of the time. Very helpful, and very much needed elsewhere on the internet.

Nope. This is one of the only communities that can stay civil (at least outside of R&P), and that's mostly because of how strict it is.

i dunno, i see a lot of trolls and harsh language in off topic, and in for instance, the Giantitp forums, i've never seen a single troll.

I think they aren't strict enough, I see a lot of advertising that goes unpunished, I see a lot of troll that goes unnoticed, I see a lot of flaming that goes unextinguished.

Not strict enough. I've made at least 5 post with fapping jokes since my last suspension (For fapping jokes), and no punishment for it so far.

I can not let this stand.

If you put effort into them, were on topic and didn't insult someone, then they should be fine.

Honestly, I think they're pretty fair about the rules here on the site. There have been some posts that got some guys on probation for reasons I didn't understand, but I probably didn't get the full story.

We are guests in their house, and if they wanted to ban us for, say, mentioning cheese, they would be well within their rights.

I wouldn't necessarily say the escapist is the mod's "house". If anything the escapist is like the ocean and the mods are the lifeguards. Because if this was their house, what's stopping the mods from shutting down the site and telling everyone to "get out". The escapist would eventually die because the contributers would no longer be welcome either since they are technically not "mods". All that would be left of this great site are the stagnating remains of past enjoyment left to decay in a corner.

All in all, I'm not disagreeing with you, but I think the metaphor of a house is a bit extreme, especially for how enormous the site's population is.

As far as the OT is concerned, I like the level of "strictness" as it is. It's far better than the Steam forums that's for sure.

Make it whatever they want but apply it consistently and evenly. I guess that they don't is a product of having a bunch of different mods doing the modding, but it seems like one guy will get banned and the other guy will get nothing even though they both posted the exact same thing.

I also suspect that some of the mods read reported posts in a vacuum and don't take the larger context into consideration. That's how one combatant in a flame war gets time-out but the other combatant don't get shit. Because they're not seeing the entire flame-war. They're merely looking at who's firing a shot at a particular point in time.

It seems like if you have a bad day around here, you'll get stuck with a warning or probation.

Sometimes it seems too much, sometimes too little....not very consistent around here.

The posting community is the lifeblood of this and all other forums. If the posting community upped and left it to the mods, I doubt the remaining site traffic would support the advertising and pay the bills. It may be their "house" but we, the posters, are the ones that that pay the mortgage.

The fact that the mods have a somewhat of a reputation for being strict is the very reason most people actually think before they post. Great way to eliminate low content or offensive posts.

Though I have seen a few people that are pretty good at trolling just enough to get away with it, like they've mastered dancing across the fine line between being a dick and being a troll.

i got a warning today for a post that said a new seires they have on this was bad and asked why it still excited but i did not use any bad words or anything and most people agreed with me but then i read a post saying the same thing just in different words im not sure but if they didnt get a warning then there being unfair
