Are there any games that you don't care about the story, but love to play?

I love playing Assassin's Creed 2. I never played the first one, and I don't plan on getting AC: Bro. But revelations looks so good and I will probably get it.

I used to worry about not having played AC: 1 before AC: 2, but I came to the realization that I just don't care about the story of AC at all. I mean I get the general concept of the story and I understand the story of AC: 2, but I just don't care about researching or playing AC: 1 or AC: Bro. And I am sure I'll have a lot of fun with AC: Revelations.

Now this is a rare occurance for me because story is usually high on my priority list, but there is something about AC that is different.

So have you guys ever encountered this? Are there games or series that you love to play, but don't really care about the story?

Every Nintendo franchise.

I am a firm believer in gameplay over story.
A game can have a bad story, but can survive with good gameplay.
A game can't have bad gameplay and hope to survive with a good story.

Yea I agree with you there, I like Zelda, but I couldn't tell you anything about the lore.

Beg to differ, kinda. Mass Effect 1 for me was intriguing but not so much fun to play. At least in the shooting and the running department. I was really just shooting to get to more talking in that game.

I say Disgaea. Always seem pretty lighthearted and goofy, but the real bread and butter is the strategy combat.

Devil May Cry 4 had a pretty fucking weak story and some laughably atrocious dialogue, ditto for RE4...and Shadow of Rome...and basically any Capcom game, Deus Ex was rather platitudinous and predictable. Also, I didn't give enough of a shit to even finish MW2's story campaign which is just as well since I only really bought that game for the multiplayer.

I agree that not every game needs a story, but I personally go for story over gameplay. For example my favourite game, Suikoden 2, had pretty standard gameplay for JRPG but it's story was so epic I still play it today.

But as I said not every game needs a story, but a good story certainly adds to the experience.

As to an actual example.

Just Cause 2, and maybe to a lesser degree The Force Unleashed.

Fallout 3. Seriously, played the hell out of that game but I only completed the main storyline once.

Portal...
Just kidding.
Silent Hill...
Again, just kidding.
Serious now, I'd say Call of Duty. It's just fun, why care what happened to which character? I just like to shoot creepy foreigners *troll face*

Just Cause 2 for me. I've done barely any of the story but i've played for many hours just roaming around the world causing Chaos (heh...) and just having fun.

Prototype. I kept skipping the cutscenes, because the story wasn't that interesting, and I wanted to go back to setting the military several billions of dollars back in the budget.
