Are there any games that you don't care about the story, but love to play?

Assassin's Creed - I'd actually like it a lot more if it were just about killing people in different time periods and the whole modern-day conspiracy plot didn't exist at all.

Call of Duty - If I wanted a Tom Clancy story I'd read a Tom Clancy novel. And I never want a Tom Clancy story.

Elder Scrolls - the only questlines in these games I actually liked were the thieves' guild ones and the Telvanni. Exploration is awesome, though, and some of the sidequests rock.

Knights and Merchants - The Shattered Kingdom. Never cared for the story. It was all about the gameplay in that RTS.

So have you guys ever encountered this? Are there games or series that you love to play, but don't really care about the story?

Yes. It is called Minecraft

Really though, besides that, I think Storm of Zehir, but its plot is just stupid. Same is true of the first pokemon games, and to a lesser degree Fallout 3.

HAWX

HAWX 2

Ace Combat 6

See the pattern there? Although, AC had a sort of okay story, I still will play pretty anything that lets me get my Maverick on.

I didn't think I needed to say "games that are meant to have plots", but yea I meant games that are meant to have plots.

Banjo Kazooie.
Main story: Rescue your sister. But the game itself was ridiculous fun. Actually, I'm pretty sure this goes for a lot of nintendo games. Most mario games, the pokemon games, Starfox, smash brothers... The list goes on.
Outside of Nintendo...
Monster Hunter.
Kill monsters. That's it. An RPG with no story (its still considered an RPG due to standard RPG mechanics like leveling and such). But its still a great time, provided you can cope with the learning curve.

EDIT: Just read the above post. It's games that are meant to have plots. So none of the above count.

Umm.....

Fable II was fun. It had a story, but I was more concerned with seeing how many attacks I could chain together. Also, the game poked fun at itself too often for me to take the story seriously. Which was a good thing.

Assassins Creed...Cause I would RATHER be playing a simple Assassination game...yet NOOOOO...I gotta sit through boring cutscenes and jump back into the future so that I can listen to Desmond ***** about his day.

Think Mirror's Edge, the story and characters in that game are completely lacking depth (in my opinion), but the gameplay is SOOO fun!!!

Half Life. It's story is unimportant and really I end up doing what freeman would do.
Aliens in lab > kill aliens > search for an escape > repeat
and I love it.

Didn't help that the story was ridiculous and hard to follow.

The Minecraft thing was just a jab.

But Storm of Zehir has a fun trade system, and a great party builder. Shame that the main story makes no sense, and the ending is kinda half-assed.

And FFXIII is a game I don't care about the story, but loathe to play. Does that count?

Games like Doom and Duke Nukem. They're the kinds of games that know that the plot's not actually important. Duke and Doom Guy don't need much more than "I'm hear to kill a buncha' motherfuckers for being monstrous killing machines.". Hell, that's probably most of Duke's actual motivation right there. And you know what? I love it.

Bulletstorm. I loved that game, I had a great time getting all the stunt shots, and yes, I loved the crude humor. I actually bought it (granted, with trade in credit). However, I couldn't tell you much about the plot. For me, it's all about killing cookie cutter goons in creative ways, story be damned.

Any Halo game falls into this catagory for me.
Most of the other ones have already been posted.
Mirror's Edge
Bayonetta
Prototype

Following the bandwagon, im going to have to say Serious Sam/Doom/ect.

Oh yeah, and every Need for Speed game that has been released in the last 8 years.

Immediately I thought Fallout 2, because I've finished it so many times in every possible way, with everything in game done, and now when I play it I just skip dialog most of the time and just enjoy big shoot outs or trying weird things or just exploring and trying to find the secret encounters (even though I know them all now...). Yeah, it's just fun to play. I metagame the crap out of it though.

Pokemon Yellow, don't really play that for the story anymore, it was hardly revolutionary first play through (not that I clearly remember it all those years ago).

Lessee, Dark Crusade and Soul Storm I definitely don't pay much attention to the campaign story anymore, and usually play Skirmish or online anyway. Wizardry 8, played to death, am actually tired of 90% of it's story and only pay attention to the bits I don't do often or make me smile. Metagame that too. Unreal Tournament because I mean, come on, does anyone care? I make my own stories in Civ 4! Oblivion, I definitely only choose to care about certain bits of Oblivions story, generally just wing it and make up my own goals. I like the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves guild, but unless I'm just absorbed in a little immersion roleplay, I don't care and I once again metagame the crap out of it. As well as just wander and as I said, make up things to do. I have played Chrono Trigger just to see different stuff happen, so I didn't really pay much attention to the stuff happening during game I'd see before. Fallout 3 gets similar, make your own goals and mess around gameplay, where not only does finding my dad become oddly unconcerning to me, but even doing anything remotely logical becomes alien.

Yeah, I game without concern for the story a lot. I mean when I'm playing Street Fighter I'm not always thinking about what the two characters backstories are and why they'd just fought the same match 30 times.

Bayonetta.
I loved the story once I got it, but I really only started it for the gameplay. Damn is that game fun to play!
I also have to agree with AC. Although I love the plot to 2 and Brotherhood, it's more fun to just kill random people and rebuild the city than to listen Desmond complain.
I never once left the Animus. :I

Sort of, In Zelda Twilight Princess I kept up with the story as best as I could but I think a lot of it was lost on me, I remember a scene with like 3 links and a dark link or something like that but for the life of me I have no idea what the point of that was, and I don't remember why I did a lot of things, mainly I just played it because it was so fun, I do plan on replaaying it though and trying to pay attention more.

Definitely Pokemon. I never paid attention to the story until recently, and when I did, it was pretty weak. But the gameplay, my god, the gameplay is some of the best I've ever played.
