Are there any "genre-defying" games?

Assassin's creed for blending free-running with fighting much better than ME (which just concentrated on the running) as well as a dash of open world to taste (I didn't mention stealth because they didn't do that one so well).
yeah, any game where you cant crouch aint gonna be a stealthy one

Any of the Team ICO games.

Assassin's Creed since it was really the first one to blend free roaming and action RPG's together with a good story.

Uhh...the only other one I can think of, without being cliche by saying Ocarina of Time, is Morrowind. Although Ocarina of Time is a great game, it's definitely not "The greatest game of all time," IGN, you fucks!

Earth Defense Force blended simple shooting with an RPG-esque development system to your weaponry and health, via pickups as you slay massive amounts of bugs. You can actually "level up" your character in a manner of speaking. Ratchet & Clank can do platforming, shooting, and arena battling well. But it really needs to stop with the racing.

The Castlevania games after and including SOTN (Metroid-vania) blended 2D hack n slashing with an RPG system beautifully.

Lastly, <color=blue>Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts.

I don't know what fucking genre that is. Besides fun. It's not a racing game, its not a platformer, its not a puzzle game. WTF is it?

sorry to say this but spore is 5 different genres.
You should be sorry.

Eviil Genius? Not a typical RTS at all, if at all.
it's a lot like hospital tycoon...
Ahh yes it is forgot about hospital tycoon. Its like the opposite of that as you have to torture instead of heal. :p

It is quite fun to play, and is only like $10 I think on the Sony Station download thing. The game play keeps you coming back, and the insanity keeps you entertained while doing it.

OMG yes... Evil Genius that game is very awesome! No other game like it, and best in genre heh (as there aren't too many games like it) You might argue dungeon keep and things like that might be similar and perhaps so, as you lay traps and things. But it is a hell of a game!

.. Rise of the Argonauts. It's not a brilliant rpg adventure, but there's so much direction and care with the pacing, narratives, acting and character- interaction that it breaks off from being just what it looks like, so to speak.

(um.. read my review of it at honestgamers.com if you'd like :D ).

System Shock & Deux Ex for blending FPS and RPG, paving the way for games like Bioshock and to some degree Fallout 3.
Think you got those mixed up... Fallout 3 was better blending then BioShock... BioShock was more of FPS game with a few RPG elements...

Shadow of the Colossus did defy the laws of sandbox gaming by focusing on a pleasant atmosphere and epic boss fights, rather than focusing on killing hookers and driving away from the cops.
