So I just played through Penumbra: Overture (the first Penumbra game) tonight (it's night here). It seems that it doesn't take as long the second time, even though it'd been over a year since I played it last. Other than its sequels (and Amnesia), is there anything else like this? I can't say I've come across any in my travels.
They're basically the natural evolution of point-and-click adventure games... you roam around the world in first person looking for objects to combine and use to solve puzzles and progress, but instead of using "push", "pull", "use", etc on objects, you make mouse movements and interact with proper physics to get things done. It's good stuff.
Penumbra's also good for making you shit yourself on occasion...
... but that's not a pre-requisite for this discussion.

Early in the game I was admiring my skills at barring a wodden door in place with some barrels, and went to put a nice big rock on top of them to seal the deal when BAM! A crazy dog burst through the door and my barrels like an explosion and charged right for my face.
