If you can afford the game and can figure out the massive controller for it I think Steel Battalion will be your thing.
Damn you, I was going to suggest that!

I've got a copy of Steel Battalion and if you can find a copy and an Xbox (not the 360) to play it on it's a lot of fun.
Bwah ha ha.
Oh crap, that looks awesome!

Oh crap, 200 bucks for a used copy!!!

Damn...
I think most of the cost goes to that giant controller assembly.

Chromehounds was a good mech game for the 360. Unfortunately the single player 'campaigns' are really just trainers for the online battles, and the servers were taken offline last year.
Chromehounds is the reason why I bought an Xbox 360, reallllly sad to see it go.

Heavy Gear 2 s a fantastic game. A bit dated now but still excellent. There is a tonne of customisation and different mechs to choose from.

Tell me about it! I didn't get broadband at my spot until December 2009, and remember when the servers shut down? That's right, bloody January 2010! I was so many shades of not f*cking impressed...

Yeah, I think it was around $200 new when it first came out.

Can you run the game without the bigass controller?

Just give it some time.
As for now, I'd suggest getting one of the Mech Assault games, Mech Warrior games, or grab Armored Core 4-5.
Nothing compares to Mech Assault 1 for me, but this game looks siiiiiick.

Why hasn't this been given sequels!? I don't remember a thing about the plot but painstakingly destroying an entire city, one building at a time, was really cathartic.
i hope that this series is buried very deep, as it was a total disgrace for the Mechwarrior series and the Battletech universe as a whole

ot: Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries and all its addons should work on vista and win 7, i had no problems with it on differently configured computers

So I'm desperate to find a good Mech game, but the only ones I've heard about recently are the Armored Core, (which is way too confusing), or the Front Mission Evolved game, (which just sucks on so many levels).

I have tried to download the free Mechwarrior 4 game from Mektek, but it didn't work (DAMN YOU VISTA!!!!)

So, did I miss anything? Oh, I have an Xbox 360 and a computer that runs Vista...

Also, for discussion purposes, you can comment about how there aren't any good Mech games anymore and how Mechwarrior 5 can't come out sooner.

In case you didn't know, I love Mechwarrior. Suck it Gundam!

Edit: So I'm looking for a game that has mechs vs mechs, something that doesn't force you into just one or two mechs but allows you control of at least a few, or else let's you customize your mech extensively, though I'm pretty sure all this is just wishful thinking.

Dammit, when is Mechwarrior 5 gonna get here?
I'd say your best bet is mech warrior 4... but as that's not working i don't know what to tell you. I agree though that the recent, i almost have to say spin off games, are lacking. They're oversimplified and removed the very things that i liked about mech warrior. Namely, the extensive customization abilities and the hard points (left torso right torso, center, head ect.) Now it's just a game about big robots shooting each other in the face, it's lost all of its tactical appeal. I remember some good times in that game... Fitting a black night with enough firepower to knock over an atlas... Crushing foes using my jump-jets in a Madcat MK2... It just isn't the same any more...

Btw is that just wishful thinking or is there actually going to be a Mech Warrior 5?
Also if you do find something good i'd like to hear about it, i wouldn't mind playing thouse games again, i wonder if Mech Warrior 4 works on windows 7 though...

Look around for someone willing to part with it cheap, I got my copy for $40, money well spent I feel.

No, that big controller is needed, the regular controller, hell even four of them don't have enough inputs for all the shit you have to do in the game.

That depends what you mean. If you mean a frantic explosion packed shooter, then I reccomend Vanquish. If you mean a game in which you bash the brains out of giant robots then War of the Monsters (ps2) is about as close as your gonna get. But they're both kick-ass.

That looks beautiful... but i don't think i can bring myself to play it if they don't return hard-points and the ability to extensively customize your Mechs (from the original Mech Warrior series, not this crap that came out on the x-box)

You mean this?

Pretty decent game, but it does get boring after you've exhausted all the mechs available.

No, they actually have an official trailer for MW5, see:
But they released it a couple years ago, and they still haven't given any updates about it. Last I heard, the developers were being sued by some assholes because they're mechs looked too similar to whoever was sueing them. So maybe it'll never come out...

Which Armored Core did you play/look at? the PS2 games and the PS3/360 games both have vastly different gameplay and mechanics.

I personally consider the PS2 Armored Cores to be WAY better and a PS2 shouldn't cost that much.

lol, its still just the demo.
I imagine it'll be Mech Assault, but just more in every regard.
It also looks to have a big focus on air-air combat.

My favorite Mech games have been the super-varied games that allowed you to be a super fast heavy hitter, or a slow tank with a bumper sticker that says "come at me bro", etc. etc.

Considering this game is made by an individual company that no one has heard of, and it looks GOOD, I have a chunk of cash waiting for when this is released.

What really pisses me off about this whole thing is that FASA already fought and WON (or settled? can't remember) this case, before selling the rights to make a official Mechwarrior 5 to whomever is currently being taken to court.

This is an essentially redundant lawsuit that a small-ish developer can't afford to be embroiled in during development, made more stupid by the fact that it was already resolved in the 80's. For those of us who genuinely love and care about the Mechwarrior video games, it's a giant cockslap in the face.

(I'm writing this post tired and unfocused, so I probably have some details amiss, but that's the jist of it).

Best Mech Game Evar; pending promising future releases:
