Are there any good MMO's coming out or left?

My first adventure in MMOs was World of Warcraft two years ago. After about a year, I realized that I had been grinding my life away for weeks on end and that the real fun of the game (raids, instances, etc.) were few and far between.

After that, I tried several other MMOs and was sorely disappointed. City of Heroes/Villains had a great tutorial, but after that I was left with a sea of identical grind quests. I love the character customization, and even the combat is decent, but I was lost very quickly with no help at all.

EVE Online was also neat, but within a week I was bored. I had to recreate my character twice because I was asked life-altering questions about race, class, and skills before I was given any information about what they meant. Exploring the various economic and skill systems was interesting, but the game hit rock bottom the first time I joined a corporation and realized I had paid to have a second job.

Lord of the Rings was great, but I found the world too large and players too spread apart. Adventuring by yourself gets boring after awhile. Otherwise, it was a very nice game.

Guild Wars -- I can't quite put my finger on what I didn't like. Other than the starting areas, there was nobody around, so groups were quite useless. The limited abilities and quests made things quickly repetitive. Overall, I just wasn't impressed.

I bought Age of Conan when it first came out and am pissed that I can't even give the game to somebody else at this point. Within only a few days of playing it, I realized I had wasted $60 on a terrible game, despite initial reviews being so positive.

Warhammer Online was great at low-levels, with public quests and RvR going a long way to encourage player interaction. Unfortunately, as I progressed I found I was all alone again, grinding my way through the levels. Too bad, because I thought it had a lot of potential.

Dungeons and Dragons was interesting and the action-element of combat was quite enjoyable. Even playing solo was quite interesting and I was constantly running into people while playing (finding a group wasn't often a problem). Again, community seemed to be quite weak, with hundreds of people just grinding instances to get the best items. The auction system is also completely broken: the exceedingly high minimum cost of items and the huge cut taken from sales meant that it was never worth it to try buying or selling an item, especially as a way to get above-average quality items as you were progressing. You would have better odds grinding for hours and waiting for the rare items to drop than trying to grind enough gold to buy them at auction. In it's favor, it was always to your advantage to team up with a group, so people did, which is more than I can say for most other MMOs I tried.

All in all, most games are suffering from poor developer support and poor community building. I think these two issues go hand-in-hand: the games don't lend themselves to player interaction. Most of them were difficult to find other people and to chat with them. Not a single one supported voice communication! Most also didn't have an emphasis on multiplayer; each player was out there for themselves and just happened to see other people running around. Because of these hurdles to communication, it was difficult to build relationships and the result was a lack of community. In the end, it was a single player game where the other characters running around may as well have been NPCs.

To make things worse, most of the MMOs were unimaginative grind-fests. I understand that part of progressing is accomplishing tasks, but "kill 10 beasts" and "collect 50 flowers" doesn't make for interesting gameplay. At least have a story, or new and interesting places and creatures, and especially some way for a player to leave a mark on the massive world they are a part of. It seems that MMOs are going the way of the FPS: stick the formula and sell as many units as you can.

If you ever do find a "good" MMO, I'd be happy to hear about it. I'd like nothing better than a game where I can make friends AND enjoying playing it at the same time.
Bingo, good God you nailed it, Bingo!

I agree I think the biggest problem I'm running into lately is that these game makers are not honest. Warhammer is a great example. They marketed the whole "rvr pvp" and since it was made by the makers of DAOC. I figured it would finally be the great mmo for pvp.

Hell no!

Complete joke, ghost town, pointless rvr, and just not fun.

To be honest, the game that has came to the closest of what I am looking for in a mmo would be DAOC. That game had a lot of the things I'm looking for in a mmo. Just a lot of frustrating nonsense that I won't begin to list. World of warcraft clearly is the top dog right now. Its great because it has the community and the huge player base. Although, from a person that loves the "pvp with a purpose". It sucks. Pvp arena's and capture the flag seem stupid to me for mmo. DAOC was perfect in that regard. Eve online is also somewhat on that path as well but just too time consuming to get to competing level.

Ugh... looks like we need a MMO Stimulus package. Haha

In have great hopes for the upcoming World of Darkness MMO.
I loved the PnP games, and can hardly wait to see it in MMO form.

If i remember correctly it is planned for release in 2010, so it's gonna be awhile.

I would still consider that any MMO has their own economies.

And what about City of Villians?

Ok I was actually interested in City of Heros but the pvp is a joke. I was hoping maybe more expecting a great custom character creation tool, a huge interactive city WITH people playing the villians, and not some pvp area thats pointless. Unless this game has that and I'm not informed.

I have absolutely no idea. It's a mirror to City of Heroes. Much like Bizzaro in Superman sense.

1: WW2 Online. Dated graphics, but amazing fun. Try if you like realism.

2: Vanguard. Kills WoW dead, just hasnt got the same community. May be a good thing though, most WoW players are retards.

City of Villians/City of Heroes get really old with the same missions over and over again. Additionally there isn't any standard gear you can obtain so I feel you miss out on the "bragging rights" aspect you find in other games.

FYI City of Heroes and City of Villians are basically two sides of the same game.

Indeed. as for your PvP question there are dedicated areas for pvp. both villian vs villian.. hero v.s hero. and hero v.s villian. And now you can actually have two seperate power builds per toon thats is swtichable with a click of a button. one for pve and one for pvp. If that helps at all.

As for creation stuff.. apperaance wise your options are bascially unlimited in that game. if your refering to build status then correct there are no real weapons or armor drops and or loot. just skin changes for a pre determined set such as broadsword. But there are a couple veteran weapons and extra powers you can get along the way called accolades for finsihgn missions and things. but the only real customiztaion in CoX is how you slot your toon and what recipe and bonus sets are within the sets u choose. So bascially everyone gets the same amount of power slots..but what you put into them is the difference from player to player.

"Hellgate London went awful, noone can deny that (considering its defunct now),"

Sorry bud but you are out of your effing mind. Hellgate was one of the most fun games I've played in recent years and I know quite a few gamers who would agree with me. I think I beat the game on normal with every single class except Engineer. It also is the only game ever where someone who loved playing FPS could play along side a sword and board character.

The only reason I could possibly see you saying it sucked is because you were too cheap to pay the monthly fee and I will agree, the free gear suuuuucked. It could also have used more levels and areas but it was killed off way to early because its parent company didn't know how to manage cash (Hellgate was profitable).

BTW a Korean company picked it up and it is now free to play.

I don't think so, but then again, I always think of any Mmos as grind fests and don't see the appeal in them..

I guess if you were terribly, terribly unfulfilled at your life?

Looks like you haven't checked out MapleStory yet. I personally think MS was a brilliant little MMO and I loved it during my time of playing. I miss the good old days when Wizet ran things though...

If you do check out MapleStory, I suggest you keep an open mind about yourself, it's a sidescrolling Action MMORPG, and as far as I know, it's one of a kind.
You can consult my three films concerning my feeling behind this game, but of all that I've played, MS suffers the most from:

1. go there
2. kill 100 of those
3. and for no reason...

Ugh...MapleStory *victim of 3 years* I was a beta tester for it...it hooked me completely because the community started out so nice. But alas, the CashShop turned all us equally happy delinquents into groups of the rich and the underprivilaged, hackers are rampant, bigots even more so...but the game IDEA in itself ...not bad, at all. Just the grind is hell...HELL. Quests aren't even worth jack. A little item here, a potion there. Theres' not enough quests to make it a factor of leveling. After level ..50ish now? It gets awfully dull.

I made it to level 91. And then...I just stopped caring. Heh I was around before all the Europe players were told to GTFO to their own crappier version of it. So yeah it's still a GMS account...(Or is a AMS now? o_O)

Meh, had some good laughs on that game though...it's not an utter loss. Just...no more.

If anyone starts on Scania or Bellocan they're welcome to my stuff if they ask /nicely/.

I don't buy any game that has a subscription fee. That sounds like a huge ripoff, especially if the game goes for regular price to begin with. If there's a monthly fee, the software should be free.

However, if the Warhammer 40K MMO is one I might make an exception for but it has to really blow me away.

"I personally enjoy WAR, but I may be a freak. I do like the emphasis on PvP, though, which I never really enjoyed in WoW."

WAR is awesome right up until the end game, which is really the whole point of the game. If you play casually will only take a month to max out one char to lvl 40 with a decent renown rank and then you will get disgusted with the game. I don't know if they've fixed it since January but but the end game was so buggy and bad that it actually ruined the entire game for me. Every single time either side would push to a fort, the servers would crash and reset the victory points. I also hated how Mythic would listen to whiners and over-nerf one class while over-buffing another and creating a HUGE game imbalance. Not to mention the massive bugs that should have been fixed before beta was over (Pet classes being able to summon a pet with 100% ripost should never have been allowed and wasn't fixed in the 4 months I played).

I got so pissed off with how horrible tier 4 was in that game that I vowed to actively talk people out of even trying the game.

If they count as MMO's, my money goes towards Planetside and Global Agenda.

Warhammer still has a chance, but a very small one at that (with how Mythic's been doing things lately; the whole nerf classes to "be more on par with their mirrors", but then they buff the mirror, so it makes it a moot point; Mythic is full of clueless people that should lose their jobs). I have what's left of a subscription for this month and I doubt I'll resubscribe. I'm just waiting for Global Agenda to go into closed beta, and assume I'll be getting in on it.

And supposedly a Company of Heroes mmo is being in the works? Should be interesting...

Hey idbmikey86, is Planetside still active with a decent community? I've been thinking about playing that since way back in the EQ1 days. If its worth it, I'd be tempted to get a full station pass just so i can play EQ1 again too.

Im still addicted to S4 <.< but then again its only been a week ... and getting annoyed when opponents tell you you're laging when your teammates tell you its only at 230, because I haven't been able to work out how to check my own ping when it, instead, shows me everybody else.

But Apart from that gripe, it alot of fun.
The ping thing is because it takes 0 time for your computer to read its own information. The ping you see for everyone else is the same ping they see for you.

And 230 is actually quite bad, you'd want it at least below 120.
Well, its lower than most people o.o; And I have no problem being hit so its not too bad.. I cant really help the ping rate unless I join the Korean server. Client would probably be a better word for it <.<

So if the ping is the same for everybody why is it you get wildly varying numbers? Ive seen people running S4 at 700+ ... and some running at 190? Never really seen it below that when I bring up the tab.
