As far as player versus player WITH a purpose, my favorite still is Dark Age of Camelot.
What's that supposed to mean? EVE Online has pvp "WITH a purpose." It's got even more advanced pvp than Dark Age of Camelot. Honestly, how can you say that all those players aren't fighting for territory, resources, and power down in 0.0?

For upcoming MMORPG there?s Darkfall online this game is Free For All PVP so you can and will be attacked by other players at any time it?s also full item loot so anything you have on you at the time of your death can be looted by your killer. Then there?s DC Universe online and Champions online there both superhero MMO?s, DC Universe you can fight against most of the big name heroes and villains or with them depending on which side your playing as, Champions online is made by the same guy?s that did City or Heroes and Villains you can customize your charter even more then in City of X you also get to make your own nemesis. There?s also Aion the Tower of Eternity it?s a Korean MMO made by the same guys that did Lineage 1 and 2 but I hear it?s not the normal Korean gird fest it?s faction based like wow, the main selling point to this game is that you can fly not on mounts but your charter get?s wings that let you fly, you can fight other players wile in the air.

Guild Wars is still out. On a related note, the Escapist guild is still recruiting (hinthint).

Yes... I know, but remember, there is a reason that "Go back to WoW" is considered degratory on the EVE boards (well except alot of EVE players being elitist jerks : < )

Anyhow, to OP, check EVE Online out, even though you've played it before, it's a game you might want to give a second try to get into, since it's very hard to do so, but when you have, it becomes awesome.

Oh... and those decisions made at character creation isn't that important... They affect the time it takes to train skills, nothing more.

Yea, the OP said that Dark Age of Camelot was the only mmorpg with purposeful pvp, even though he's played EVE, which means he never really got too far into EVE and never really understood it. So yea, OP, try out EVE again.

And the reason "go back to WoW" is an insult among the EVE community is because there's a general consensus that people who prefer WoW over EVE just don't understand EVE and can't grasp the complexity. Just explaining that for everyone on this forum that might have been confused.

Really enjoyed MapleStory for its simple style.
Guildwars was fun.. but I felt it lacked a certain something.
And WoW was really really good. Really.

FYI "Go back to WoW" has become a catchall phrase in every MMO I've played since WoW came out, basically because alot (not all) of WoW players are immature children. I'm guessing its simply because WoW is the most popular MMO out there and isn't really any kind of reflection on the community as a whole.

I played WoW for two months, and then I quit. It just wasn't good.
I do play Lord of the Rings Online now, and I really like it. There's
a much bigger emphasis on exploration and story than just killing things.

Well, Planetside still is around, but it's more of a dead horse along the lines of every other mmo that's lingering around and really shouldn't be. It's only still around because there's nothing else like it to compare to. And with Global Agenda around the corner, that should change.
If Global Agenda fails me then I'm pretty much done bothering with MMO's ever again.
Warhammer is still being played by me, but only as a time-waster and to hang out with in-game friends until Global Agenda comes out or I get into beta.

None of these games people have listed are "fun" anymore, and I think the developers forgot what fun really means. They patch games in an attempt to keep it alive, but it just fuels the exodus. And they rarely take into account how the community adapts their games to actually make them fun for themselves, and then proceed to kick it over like a sandcastle that doesn't belong (like forum-organized duels in Warhammer being considered illegal and reportable offenses).

Mythic and Blizzard think exactly the same and honestly believe that constant waves of new content, rather than bug-fixes or game balance, is what people want. I'm just surprised WoW is still around, being the steaming pile that it is, still garnering the huge amounts of praise as if it's been original in any way since launch. Add in any other mmo that's come out after EQ, UO, or DaoC, to that as well.

I am forced to agree but I blame that more on the devs than anything these days.

I do have to say, While it's not a MMO, I've been having a blast playing Left 4 Dead with a bunch of friends and I have been playing it as often as a friend calls me up and asks me to play (which has been every night this week). One thing I love about playing a game bought from Steam is that your friends can see you whenever you are on any of their games and shoot you a quick message to ask if you want them to join in playing any other game. It's that kind of community that keeps me playing games over and over.

Bah, you're forgetting about, or don't know about Party Quests. Those are where the heart of the game is at. It's either level up fantastically at PQ, or go grind for the next 10 hours, unless you have a 2x EXP card in which case, go ahead and grind.
I'll say it every-time. If the first 20 hours of a game is not fun. The next 20 don't make up for it.

Whoa slow up buddy.

I'm not saying Eve online's pvp sucks or is not good. I'm sure it is good and the fights matter. Its just getting to the point where you can compete is what annoys me. What takes a year of skill training? An actual year? Not to mention, it is indeed a nice looking space mmo. My biggest problem and desire is be my character. Meaning, being able to get out of my ship, walk around my ship, go on other ships, go on planets, etc.

Remember whats good for you isn't good for everyone. Sorry Eve is about 50% of what I am looking for in an mmo.
