Waltzing and shag dancing are super fun for me. I really enjoy them. Swing dancing is also fun. I can't really say that I enjoy club dancing all that much though.

That was just all kinds of awesome. Now I want to do that, too. But what in the world do you call that?
In the description he calls is "criming," though it has no real name. I'm pretty sure he just made it up.

Well, I do my best to be like this guy...
... but I'm not as good as him obviously. I want to dabble in a bit of hip hop dancing and incorporate some shuffling and popping, but that would take time and practice. And who has time for that? :p

Seriously, though. I consider myself at least a little ready to start making my own dance vids. If not, at least close. :/

Lately I've been thinking about my two main passions/hobbies in life (video games and dancing) and how they vary rarely ever cross paths. I have yet to meet any other dancers who also love video games and vice versa. So, I thought maybe I just need to go looking for them. So, here I am. Let me introduce myself. I am a 20 year old female dancer and I live in the mid-west U.S. I take Ballet (getting my pointe shoes next week!), teach Irish Step dancing and took competitive Gymnastics for about 8 years. So, that's me. Now your turn. Do you dance? What type? For how long? And whatever else you'd like to share. :)
I taught ballroom for a while and then got bored with it. Too many bridezilla bitches demanding stupid pointless shit for their stupid pointless wedding. We used to put pools together on how long we thought a specific couple would stay together. Perhaps I'm jaded....

lol. Anyway, I wouldn't call video games a passion of mine, but I like them well enough.

Why? I don't get pointe shoes, I mean, I get they make the dancer go higher and its a mark of skill due to the fact that you have to balance on them, but it completely mystifys me as to why someone would want to put their feet through the pain they cause (or so I hear).

I don't dance, ever. Two of my brothers did ballet for a long time, so I have a tiny bit of knowledge about it.

Also, anyone who says that Ballet isn't manly, is a fucking moron, it is one of the most difficult things I've ever watch someone do, and it takes a ton of strength, balance, and finesse.
Pointe shoes are uncomfortable but I wouldn't say they are extremely painful or anything. I mean, if you're in a company and dancing on them for 8 hours a day or more then yeah, it's gonna hurt. But you get that in any sport. Why would a gymnast practice uneven bars if it tears up her hands? Because she loves the sport. If you enjoy something enough you are willing to go through a certain amount of discomfort in order to become the best that you can be. I mean, I know I'm not going to be the best pointe dancer there ever was, I have too many ankle issues for that, but just the fact that I got this far, that I got to the point (no pun intended) of being able to do this is such a big step for me. I thought I was never going to be able to go on pointe no matter how hard I tried. So for me it's an even bigger mile stone than for most dancers.

I hate it when people say dancing isn't a real sport. Honestly those people couldn't do half the things most dancers do on a daily basis. But I think it so cool that your brothers did Ballet. Were they young when they started? So many younger boys never get into any sort dance because they think it's girly.

My ways, eh?
The most obvious tip is to practice a lot. If you'll do a move once, it may be hard but if you'll do it a 1000 times, it becomes easy, natural even. I won't lie, it takes time to become good, a few weeks, even a few months won't be enough.
What also helps me is if I play some music and imagine myself dance BUT from a first person perspective. Most people are physically able to do the majority of dance moves but the mind doesn't know the patterns of those moves so they can't do them. Teaching your mind the correct sequence is 90% of the work. It doesn't work if you're just watching others do it or even if you remember the sequence from a third person perspective because the mind cannot apply it to the body.
When I want to train a particular sequence but can't at that particular point in time, I just repeat it in my head in FPP over and over again and when I do actually start training, it's a lot easier because I've already taught my brain the sequence and I don't have to think about it.

Me (the redhead) and a few friends bellydancing at a recital. The blonde is the choreographer.

I have a whole pile of game songs that I plan to choreograph dances to, but I've been too depressed to feel motivated to dance recently (though I know that if I actually started again, it would help my depression).

I'm pretty much a dancer, yes. I like dancing if that's what you mean. Plus, I'm on my third season of ballroom dancing which I've started picking up with my girlfriend.

But that's not the dancing I'm talking about when I call myself a dancer. I just dance a lot when going out and I love doing that. I love letting to of everything I do in my day-to-day life when I dance. I love going all the way with dancing. It's kind of a passion. I grew in it. I wasn't always good at it, but only since a year ago I picked up a kind of flow in my dances which -according to reliable sources- makes me dance really good, free of form and adapting to every kind of music that comes along. It sounds cheesy but I kind of ride along with the music, adapting the moves I string together to fit the rythm, lyrics, etc.

A lot of friends look up to my dancing skills, I've had people asking me to teach them what I do. I can only answer "I'll tell you when I figured out what I'm doing". My girlfriend is kind of a natural too, so when we dance together it works really well. There's always quite a lot of people looking at us.

I used to take ballet classes for a year or so, but I stopped so I could focus on my studies. Nowadays I usually get my dancing out either at punk rock shows or when I'm alone in my room and I play some faaaaaaaaabulous disco.

Oh, P.S. There are some songs from/about video games (several Miracle of Sound songs) that have inspired me to try my hand at choreographing dances to them. I don't have much experience in that area but that's why this is kind of an experiment. In my mind I'm picturing a duet to Legends of the Frost that would just be so fantastic. Let me know what you think about this idea.

Might be relevant to your interests. procedurally generated music based on the dance. Possibly. No idea how much giggery pokery was going on in the back end.

I can sort of swing dance. My mom taught me the jitterbug for some reason or another once, and it's stuck. I should probably learn more, but I've never gotten around to it.
Oh I'd love to do the Jitterbug. Looks like good fun.
Unfortunately I have neither the talent nor the partner for much dancing.
We should start a ballroom dance club!
A secret ballroom dance club. Or rather... a secret ballroom dance gang!

I can Gangam style, and that's about it (dyspraxia FTW)

Know several dancers though, everything from B-boy to ballroom, just wish I had the coordination.

I used to dance when I was in the Musical Theater school called Saskatchewan Express[footnote]Most kids in my area have their parents make them join sports teams for after school activities. My parents had me in 4 bands, a musical theater school and a drama club at one point. Without any sarcasm at all, I love my parents for that.[/footnote] as it was part of the three aspects of musical theater. Out of singing, acting and dancing I enjoyed dancing the least. I wasn't terrible at it, it just wasn't nearly as fun as singing or acting. I love acting...

I was thinking more of a heterosexual ballroom dance gang but alright... I can run with Footloose.
