Are there any real suggestions for playing EVE online if you are a casual gamer?

I have played Eve online off and on through the past years and I always start out great for the first three to four months then it goes down hill. I usually get targeted by greifers who have nothing better to do then try and egg me into attacking them and when I don't (I am in a Hulk so there really isn't a reason to be sending my drones after a stabber.) they end up warping in a Dominix fitted for a High sec quick kill! Most of the people I started playing with left because of crap like this and sadly I found that most of the people I meet tend to actually be trying to scam me or gank me just for their giggles. The Corps I joined really did not have the ability to protect me or them selves really and so I have in the past lost a few retrievers to pirates or griefers while my Corps mates played tickle the hostile entity.
My wife tells me to keep away from the game and stay with WOW as griefers can't really effect you unless you are on a PVP server but she knows I love Sci-Fi and before EVE the only real fix I could get was Earth & Beyond which died pretty quickly.

What suggestions would you give to a returning player who only really has an average 3 hours a day to play and isn't looking for wall to wall PVP or having to spend nights waiting for a group of camping griefers who seem to get their jollies from suicide gank-ing miners here and there?

I have no idea what that even means, but I am glad I did not encounter this in the twenty minutes I wound up playing that game.

I refuse to play an MMO where I can lose all of my progress for good. There is no point to putting all that time and energy into a game only to have a bunch of ****holes screw you over.
