Frente's version of Bizarre Love Triangle is so much better than New Order's. Sorry about the crappy live recording. Seek out the studio recorded one, it is beautiful.

Also, the Doug Anthony All Stars, despite being primarily a comedy troupe, did Throw Your Arms Around Me far better than Hunters and Collectors could have ever dreamed. Again, sorry for the crappy live recording. It really doesn't do it justice.

EarlyRise's cover of Korn's Narcissistic Cannibal. I'm a Korn fan, but that dubstep mix album was really 'meh'. This band, however, turned that song into decent rock song AND with an awesome female vocalist.
There's also a ton more I'd like to post, but it's late and I'm going to sleep. I'll probably come back and make another comment again later.

P.S. I love music threads. Keep posting awesome stuff peoples.

Well...the primary one I think of when I think of amazing covers would have to be...

Avenged Sevenfold's cover of Iron Maiden's Flash of the Blade.
After listening, I'd have to disagree, personally.

Not bad, as above though, I'll have to respectfully disagree. And I kinda prefer Tyr's cover over that one *shrug*

I'll go with Hammerfall's cover of Pretty Maids' 'Back to Back'
The one time I couldn't choose, though, is Blind Guardian vs Dio on "Don't Talk to Strangers"

Nobody's mentioned Alien Ant Farm's cover of Michael Jackson's song Smooth Criminal yet? I love Michael Jackson, but what can I say, it was a good cover and I find it more pleasing to my ears.

There are some, but the ones that stick out most is:

Hamburger Concerto by Focus (which uses some riffs at the beginning from Brahms 'Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op.56')

All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix (Bob Dylan cover)

Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix (originally written by The Leafs) some greater heavy version live -
Mars - The Bringer Of War by Emerson, Lake & Powell (from Gustav Holst)

Oh Yeah! and Child In Time by Deep Purple (original song called... well the got the starting riffs from some band, can't find them)

If any, very few. If I happen to hear a cover before I hear the original, I still tend to pick the originals.

I'm trying to think of how to explain why, but can't think of the correct way to word it, so take my really bad explanation instead. The remakes seem to take out the main aspect of what makes the song good, and without that "layer" if feels bland and watered down. Ya know?

That isn't to say that there never are covers I like more, just in my experience it's less common.
Yeah, I say it's more that the original was made in a unique original style, and most cover artists just take it and quickly remake it with their own sound, but without changing the words or riffs to suit their own style, it comes out awkward and weaker. Or they try to remake the original so much it comes out forced.

That's how I feel about most suggestions.

Original: Bad Company by Bad Company
Cover: Bad Company by Five Finger Death Punch

Original: Over the Hills and Far Away by Gary Moore
Cover: Over the Hills and Far Away by Nightwish

Original: Twilight of the Thunder God by Amon Amarth
Cover: Twilight of the Thunder God by Sabaton

The reason why I like these covers better than the original are pretty much the same.
The original is either too slow or fast (deathmetal-ish, Amon Amarth) while I am more for Metal, so upping or slowing the tempo and changing the singer of these songs appeals better to me :D

I like this version a hell of a lot more than the original.

Not saying it's like my favorite song ever, but the original just sounds awful compared to this. Makes good fighting music. :p

Almost everything from Northern Kings. Metalized versions of older Pop songs? Yes please.
A few that I prefer to the originals are:

We Don't Need Another Hero (Tina Turner)
My Way (Frank Sinatra)
Take On Me (A-ha)

Swedish Hitz Goes Metal (silly name, whatever) does the same thing with:

Mamma Mia (ABBA)
The Winner Takes it All (ABBA)
The Look (Roxette)
Listen to Your Heart (Roxette)

and a bunch more.

Reinxeed did a cover of:

"I need a Hero." (Bonnie Tyler)
"Simply the Best" (Tina Turner)
"Viva Forever" (The Spice Girls)

At Vance did a cover of:

"Eye of the Tiger," (Survivor)
"The Logical Song," (Super Tramp)
"SOS" (ABBA)

Avantasia did "Lay All Your Love on Me" (ABBA)

Basically any metal/rock cover of a band I don't really listen to will win out. Covers of Queen and Journey I don't usually like because I actually like Queen and Journey. While I recognise that a lot the original artists of these songs are fantastic, they're just not my cup of tea. As a result I prefer the covers.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Sorry, Len, I love you too but it belongs to Jeff now.

Florence and the Machine - You've Got the Love

Johnny Cash - One

Johnny Cash - Further On Up the Road

Thin Lizzy - Whiskey in the Jar
There isn't really an original, I suppose, but I listen to this version more than The Dubliners' one.

Edit:
Also, Adele - Make You Feel My Love.

Which in itself is a cover of Dolly Parton's song of the same name.

I know it's practically sacrilege to prefer anything but the original Dio version, but Howard and the crew do an amazing cover.

Yes. This is the song and the group that first came to mind when I visited this thread. It's a shame that on the Hunters and Collectors: Crucible album they got Neil Finn and Eddie Vedder to do the cover and not Paul, Tim and Richard to do it.

I like Marilyn Manson's version of "Sweet Dreams" better than the original. I heard the original first, I just liked the cover better.

Intriguing... I'd like to hear them do some Power Metal, I feel like his voice would do well for it.

I've always preferred Obituary's version of "Circle of the Tyrants" to Celtic Frosts original

Also Metallica's version of "Stone Cold Crazy" is better than Queens original imo

The entirety of Chris Whitley's Perfect Day album.
It's beautiful, through and through.

Some favorites being his covers of Vera Hall's Wild Ox Moan, The Door's Crystal Ship and Hendrix's Drifting.
