Are these forums really useful?

I just like using the forums as a way to kill some time, voice my opinions, and hear what others have to say.
Plus, for some reason, I find increasing my "post count" really addictive...

Oh, you've noticed that, have you?

But, on the other hand, if you're using the forums to muck about, rant and waffle on about your avatar eating your mum, then it's sorta useful.

But yes, big words, very clever.
'I don't think either one lends my opinions any more or less credence.'

-_- Did you even read the post, or are you just screwing with me here? Eh, I don't really care anymore, like I said I don't think this particular thread is going anywhere, so I'm off to find another.

No discussion on this forum is particularly worthwhile.
huh....pretty much. better than what i was going to say;"bunch of self enlightened elitist with a PC and a bias ultra liberal viewpoint with little to no actual sense of humor."

but i think your description is better.

However, the best way to gain a loathing for these forums is to simply post here for a while. You notice when these threads come up that the older members tend to agree with my sentiment, after the initial thrill of finding a permissive forum with reasonably legible posts wears off you start to get a feel for the place. There are quite a few people on here who are incredibly rude and abrasive, but can be because their opinion is in the majority. There are even other users who flat-out break the terms of service but since their viewpoint is the most popular they're seen as crusaders rather than the nuisance they really are. There are even perfectly reasonable viewpoint held by people offline that you can't express as fact here without being reported or flamed into retreat because the Escapist groupthink long ago decided that these opinions are wrong.
I've started to hit that point. You can pretty much tell exactly what's being said in a thread based on the title and reply count.

Try liking Call of Duty on these forums. People act like you've killed their mother.

Then again, I can't disagree with you. I'm not an artifact creature and I'm green. Block=denied.

Tried to find a decent 21 gun salute vid but failed, a painfully well observed paragraph.

These forums are full of gamers so dont expect anything big since most gamers think they are some godlike being that deserves immidiate respect and is SOMEONE UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT even though they are so stupid they cant see that this attitude is just coming from silly in game manipulations that only exist to make them feel better about themselves for no real reason. Well no real reason for them, the companies get a lot of money from that, hooray for ethical game industry xD

This also creates gigantic fragile empty egos that make many gamers rage and attack anyone who said anything negative for them, just see the forums, full of negative retaliations so their fragile egos wont get hurt. And because of those stupidly fragile egos free speech isnt allowed.

Generic gamer got banned because he had an "offensive" opinion, and moderators do know how stupid people are here and know that many are going to attack him because he "insulted" them, while if people had brains and KNEW that they werent what generic gamer said then they wouldnt get offended...

Even trolls get banned here because people are so stupid they cant see when someone is OBVIOUSLY provoking them...But eh, you have to defend your ego from the evil troll attacks...
Plus people feel better when someone is doing something that they believe is not right, because it implies they are the good innocent people. Have you seen the lulzsec threads that got deleted? They were full of people insulting and degrading lulzsec so they can make their sad selves feel better compared to evil and unethical lulzsec that stole their precious ego boosts... Watching threads filled with pointless insults and degrading terms was kinda sad...completely pointless and useless but eh makes ppl feel better in their imaginary world

Which leads to the subject of pointless and stupid obvious answer topics which i facepalm every time i see, but in the case of "opinion topics" People feel better subconsciously when they see threads like "what do YOU..." or "YOU believe that x?". Those thinks make people think someone actually cares or that their opinion matters but just like you observed, it doesnt matter at all, people are posting pointless opinions completely disregarding other opinions so at the end you have a 10 page thread with opinions bouncing form one side to another and 0 good arguments expect "degrading arguments" since gamers dont have much of a defense, knowledge wise so they just try to degrade someones argument by calling him a kid, jobless or whatever, anything that will make them look lesser in their eyes so their ego wont get hurt...

Some threads at least serve as lulz, watching homophobic people at mass effect 3 same sex romance thread or watching some epicly epic funny quotes about sexuality is quite nice time killing xD

Welp, guess Generic Gamer got banned for expressing a sentiment that was well-explained, put in context and which many people agreed with.

Makes sense.

Once again, mods, what is the POINT of even allowing these threads to exist if one of the two or three possible responses to the question in the thread title will earn you moderation? This is a blatantly slanted enforcement policy.

That's what almost all forums are like(and real world arguments too), but I don't go on forums to learn something I go on forums to have fun and kill time.

What he did was stand in front of a sniper's nest waving his dick and screaming "Snipers are gay and have lots of sex with animals."

The Escapist has the occasional issue, but discussion actually happens here, and doesn't turn into "You are teh fagsorz lol" because our mods actually do something.

Rather have strict than non-existent.
Im not sure I agree with him getting banned, but Im afraid to express my opinion, because I might get banned.

So uh good job on the banning guys! I agree wholeheartedly! free speech = LOL!

No. They aren't for me. I figured out quiet some time ago why people use forums: vanity. The only thing that people get out of this kind of thing where they talk into a box and get response from people who may or may not exist is that people get to express their opinions and idea, thus being vain. Of course some people also ask for opinions or surveys, once again focusing on helping themselves too. For the msot part lots of the comments I see are focused not on helping or explaining but more on expressing the poster's opinion and their own ideas, thus vanity. I don't really find that useful for anything more then getting a public opinion count. Of course maybe I'm just jaded from spending so long here. Honestly I just use the forum as a way to waste time and sometimes ask myself what I think about stuff. Vanity, vanity, all is vanity.

Not quite sure on the banning either. They usually at least put a reason as to why they banned a person. Sooo... a bit skeptical on if he actually got banned, and specifically why.

The mods are usually nice people, but they can be on the strict side.

I dont think generic gamer deserved the ban for that post. Maybe he had background but either way the post shouldn't have spilled the cup.

On topic. They are useful for entretainment, news, as a launch plataform for contributors, discussing light subjects and reading others opinions that might or not be well tought/smart. Don't come here expecting to find the meaning of life.

He was pointing out some truth there, oh well
