Okay so my brother has steam and everytime he sees me playing a game he decides that he has to have it.

However I'm seventeen and he's nine. but regardless of this fact a majority of his games are MA+15. Are the following games really that appropriate? should I have a word with my folks about this?

Hitman : Blood Money
Alien Vs Predator 2010 - Extreme Gore
Mass Effect - Sexual Referances, violence ect.
Modern Warfare 1 - High Level Violence
CoD World at War - Torture, executions ect
L4D 1&2 - Gore, not much but it's still enough to be MA+15
FallOut 3 - Gore and Adult references
Saint Row 2 - what doesn't this game have
Grand Theft Auto IV - see Saints Row 2

I cant even buy games that I normally would because I know he'll want them and I cant convince my parents to stop buying them.

Are there problems with these games being played by a nine year old or am I over reacting?

I'd like to add that I have no problem with any of the content in any of these games, I have infact enjoyed them all. My only concern is whether they are appropriate for someone so young

If they're games that are rated above his age, you should check with your parents to make sure they're OK with it. That way, they can feel more in charge of things like this.

Just, whatever you do, keep him away from the mic...

I'd say that it isn't appropriate for him, but letting him watch or occasionally play a little bit (i/e drive around in Saints Row and mess around) should be enough to satisfy him without getting him engrossed in that kind of inappropriateness.

For example, let him drive you to your missions in Gta or Sr2. Or let him watch you wander the Wastes in Fallout.

I don't know?

My dad showed me the exorcist, the shinning, taxi driver, and apocalypse now as a kid...and now I don't see anything wrong with that...=/

Those games are absolutely not appropriate for a nine year old to play. Maybe he can watch a bit, but even then it's questionable.

You should have a word with your folks about this, not because they are damaging to his psyche or anything, but because I'm of the firm belief that you should be at least 15 before being allowed to play online, something he's obviously doing if he's playing something like Left4Dead.

Keep little kids the hell out of online games, and keep them in single player where they belong. Their interactions with actual people on xbox live are much worse for them than any fictional violence, plus little kids annoy the crap out of me.
I agree, online gaming should be saved for a later age. If only I had stopped my brothers before call of duty

Kid'll survive Mass Effect, he might not appreciate it as much as it deserves though, it's rated 12 over here, so, y'know.

How smart/mature would you say your brother is though?

In my opinion, no. But your parents and/or legal guardians are the ones who should decide that.

On second thought, make sure he stays away from online gaming, or else he might grow more immature.

No, those games aren't appropriate for a nine-year-old. You personally can probably do little, but if it were me I'd have a concerned word with an authoritative figure in the household. Maybe letting him watch a bit is okay, but of course that runs the risk of only making him more eager to play it himself.

Really depends on your parents and brother. Do you believe he's mature enough and aware of the fact that many of the things depicted in many of those games aren't okay to do in real life? I figure, so long as his parents are okay with it, and he knows that it's just a game, he should be able to play them.

But I suppose keeping an eye on him, and ensuring that they're not affecting him in a negative way would also be important. Some kids are more mature for their age, and the ESRB rating is more of a general guide, which may not always apply so much to certain people.

Whether a game is suitable for someone depends purely on the person in question, and it is not something any member on this forum can decide except you yourself together with your parents.

They probably know their child better than anyone and you know what those games are like. Hence, you should work together to decide whether your little brother is mentally mature enough to play those games.

....Oh. Well, then I'd scrap pretty much every game from that list except Mass Effect, that game is pretty tame.

My brother plays and loves all of those games, and he's nearly 10.
He's fine. In fact, I played games just like that when I was his age.
It doesn't depend on the arbitrary figure, it depends on the level of maturity the kid expresses. Not just in terms of humour either. As long as he can differentiate right and wrong, knows what scares him, and knows that games are just that, games, then he should be fine. I certainly was. Am.

I wouldn't think that Mass Effect is too inappropriate, but it is a little too heady for a nine year old. "Daddy, what's existentialism?".

He is just nine years old. Most of these games are rated mature and are very brutal. In my opinion he should play neither.
