I loved the Halo series. Competent shooters, fun gameplay and nice presentation. I agree it's not mind-blowing, but I had fun with it and if I have fun then the game is good.
Games get hated for feeling derivative as well. Most shooters just get crushed under Halo's massive popularity as a shooter (which is overblown) and get dubbed as derivative. We're seeing less of that these days, though.
Much like I expect Mass Effect to become the new standard for single player RPGS and people will stop knowing that there were lots of RPGs before it. It wasn't an amazing game either, it was kinda like the Halo of RPGs.
