Are they bad or do we just *want* to hate them?

I loved the Halo series. Competent shooters, fun gameplay and nice presentation. I agree it's not mind-blowing, but I had fun with it and if I have fun then the game is good.

Games get hated for feeling derivative as well. Most shooters just get crushed under Halo's massive popularity as a shooter (which is overblown) and get dubbed as derivative. We're seeing less of that these days, though.

Much like I expect Mass Effect to become the new standard for single player RPGS and people will stop knowing that there were lots of RPGs before it. It wasn't an amazing game either, it was kinda like the Halo of RPGs.

Moral of the story: Have low expectations and never be disappointed, no matter what anyone else says. This way every game/movie/book is fantastic!

That's how I live my entire life! XD

Aimless point: I think pretentiousness is a poor reason for anything unless someone is actually talking down to you or purposefully trying to talk over your head.

I do remember getting into System of a Down back in about 1999, and I was trying to make my friends like em, and ...nahhh.

Then of course, they get big, and suddenly everyone loves em, and I have to admit to feeling' but hey, they're MY band, you can't all like em too!', just a little bit.

Sometimes when you find something you truly love that no-one knows about, you dont want every 12 year old in town wearing one of their t shirts.

I think I've 'grown out' of that mindset now tho.

As far as hype for games go, I tend to go on my own and play or go on the ideals of my close gaming friends, but take it all with a grain of salt. I'd have to play it myself first before I go spamming FF and WoW forums.

Of course, it coincides with common opinion fairly frequently.
