are they losing their touch or is it just overhype?

No, this is a perfect example of nostalgia
There are brilliant games coming out and games that have come out this generation
I will make a list of games that the majority of people will agree with, from the top:

Call of Duty 4
Bioshock
Infamous
Halo 3
Little Big Planet
Forza 2
Guitar hero 3
Fallout 3
The Orange Box
Left 4 Dead
Crackdown
Viva Pinata
Batman: Arkham Asylum
The Ratchet and Clank games on the ps3
Grand Theft Auto 4

Those games are just off the top of my head and the majority of those games will go down as classic
Now think how many games games were on the NES and SNES, not that many. While I made this list in 2 minutes and I'm sure I am missing more.

[small]Also, if you think any of these games are rubbish or you dislike my opinion, I don't give a shit. It's my opinion on good games this generation[/small]

I like the modern games... The Force unleashed(xbox) was terrific, Halo 3 ODST was a nice flashback, and ... uhh... Yeah.
I sincerely hope you where being sarcastic.

Also, for those of you who want to make sarcasm obvious, whenever theres sarcasm on my pay-TV subtitles, the end of the sentance has this: (!) eg.

Person 1: Wanna come to my place to play Halo?
Person 2: Yeah, because I just looove Halo(!)

(yes I am aware that person 2 is a douchebag)
Well I'm easily entertained. ODST wasnt fun, I started hating Halo a long time ago.
"Oh look aliens! Kill them before they kill us!" "More aliens that turn our troops into zombies!!!" Got boring fast. Multiplayer... don't get me started on multiplayer, and that goes for all the games.

The Force Unleashed was fun, for like an hour maybe. Then it got off-track and repetitive.

I think that the dearth of new ideas in all major forms of media (books, TV, movies, video games) can be traced back to the fact that it is easier to get the bigwigs to "roll the dice" on something that has been done before than something brand new. With something old, you have a general idea of how well it will sell, especially if it is a sequal or remake. With something new, you have no idea how well it will sell and its hard to ask for people to fincance a game that could easily flop horribly.

anyone else noticed the decline in the quality of game releases lately? i mean the most recent game i bought was operation flashpoint and that wasnt too good. its almost like all the games are coming out of a factory, like they're not putting as much effort into them. although it could be that people expect too much because of the promotion around them. what do you think? do game developers not know what they're doing anymore? are they just lazy? or are there no more good ideas?
use the search bar, there already has been a thread with the same exact name.

also, Halo series, all you need to know.
yeah the reason theres a thread with the exact same name is because my computer double posted. but now the other thread is about the many uses for cardboard boxes

Game quality has diminished and hype has increased due to marketing. Simple reasons for this:

1. Ever since the PS1 games have been aimed towards a wider audience, including people who would usually not be interested in video games as they are the "vast untapped audience" (see: casual and older gamers via the Wii success) as well as the generic shooter / sports franchse plague aimed towards the less demanding player.

2. Games have become a commodity popular among consumers and thus the scales of economics kick in. If you have a bad product but make it look good enough to buy, people will still buy it and you'll have made great profit from little investment. This is basically the entire marketing plan of current sub-par games up to and including GTA and the Halo franchise.

3. Sales trends. The giants of videogaming are known to be the tri-force of shoot-em-up, sports title and minigame collection. These three genres make more profit than any other in the gaming market. Who would put the time and effort into a brilliant re-imagining of Altered Beast when the Carnival Games collection on Wii would sell millions more copies for the same price?

All in all, I'm not saying the world of gaming has come to an end. Only 95% of all new products are and will forever be a waste of time and money, that 95% of gamers don't realise this and buy them anyway, and that the feeling of dissapointment many of us guess is here to stay. Pessimism! It saves me money.
