It doesn't matter if the ending is happy or unhappy, as long as it's well written it's all good.

I like a sad ending if it is build up to such. Again, NWN2, MotB serves well for my purposes
You can end the curse that has last over a thousand years, end the suffering of countless to come, and destroy a old, evil god. The land of spirits will be forever safe, free from a curse that would elsewise destroy them all. The price? You are forever bound to serve as a guardian of the Fugue plane(not a happy place), never able to leave it. The epilogue states that a series of plays are penned, and all the greatest actors in Faerun vie for the chance to play you. It is not the only ending, but this one gives a sense of finality. The others are ?that tale is yet to be told? endings, which I don?t like.
RDR
The ending of RDR almost made me cry, to be quite honest.

A sad ending where you achieve victory can be good, give a nice sense of closure to a game.

What OP describes (you fight hard, fail, evil wins!) seems like kind of a rip off. That's what happens if I suck and can't pass the game, I'm not working to beat a final boss to watch myself die and lose for all humanity (or whatever).

Sad endings never go down well. Remember Fallout 3? Suppose people don't like closure...
The ending of that was fine, but presenting an open ended world with it then just stopping as soon as you finish? That was a slight kick in the balls.

Sad endings can be good, it's a lot easier to convey emotions in a sad ending. Especially negative ones, but also positive ones. That's how I see it anyway.

An example would be HL2 episode 2. The ending of that left me wanted more, and when I played it first time I was first shocked, then felt kind of saddend. I thought it was a great ending.
No Fallout 3 was bad because the game just had it out for you before Broken Steel
You should of been able to live from several ways using a radsuit/rad-x/rad away, sending in a companion(Mr. Gusty a robot or Fawkes a Super Mutant who won't be effected by Radiation as quick as you.),sending in Sarah or Anyone else really to just press 4 buttons.

New Vegas has an ending that stops the story/gameplay but they don't break the rules of the game to make sure you die 1st.

Dragon Age: Origins had a potentially sad ending, and it was by far more powerful than any other. Reach's ending was another example of a well done and sad/bittersweet ending.

Sad endings can add a lot to a story, but also ruin it if used too strongly. My favourite ending is a bittersweet one, because it's so more emotionally effective, even if I want to beat the crap out of the author after finishing something like River God, Assassin's Apprentice or the Clan of the Cave Bear.

Fallout 3's ending wasn't sad, it was stupid and pointless for obvious reasons.

Sad endings are fine as long as they are good and give good closure to the story.

I prefer choice. While most gave up on it too soon to see it, one thing i loved about Two Worlds, there are 2 endings, and one of them you can actually side with the bad guy, let your sister become the evil God, and fight off a group of heros.
It really depends, but unhappy endings well...we have enough of that in real life, let me have a happy fantasy...

So long as the ending is consistent with the rest of the story that's all good.

Inkheart pulled a happy ending right out of its ass and that sucked.

Unhappy endings are not inherently bad. They're not inherently good, either.

It really depends on why it's unhappy, and if you actually care enough about the people the ending affects.

perfect example is ffX

the entire point of the game is self sacrifice and we know all throughout that either tidus or yuna are not going to make it, the game ends with tidus dying(i'm calling it dying!) and the world being a better place thanks to his sacrifice

look forward to X-2 where he springs back to life for no fucking reason other than "the last ending was too sad!"
I was going to say this as well, it also tends to determine what you define as unhappy ending. Since there are several Games that i played that had a satisfying resolution but a sad ending that left me saying "That's Crap Man!" one of my favorite examples is the perfect ending to persona 4. Because your forced to abandon the life and friends you just made despite spending a year solving a murder case, and building friendships, falling in love etc. And by the end i was crying like a baby, and not tears of happiness, tears of sadness for having to leave such a wonderful life.

I reckon that the quality of a sad ending reflects the developer; if its just been thrown in for the point of being able to have an evil campaign, then they are bad, but if they're put there deliberately and are built up to throughout the game, then they can be more powerful than the cheesy style good endings.

It depends how it's handled. In the case of Red Dead Redemption, very well, in the case of Fallout 3, not so much.

Sometimes they can add more to a story than if they simply had a "happily-ever-after" ending. My favourite game ending is utterly depressing, but it fits the story very well.

Typically the unhappy ending is reserved for the 'bad' storyline in games with multiple endings.

The truly worst ending is a well done bittersweet ending, which most people seem to be confusing it with.
Precisely this.

Games with sad ending are not inherently doomed to be bad. There are good games with sad endings, and bad games with sad endings. Then there are both good and bad games with bittersweet endings. The bittersweet ending kind of makes you feel as though you've lost, despite winning the game though; as it should.

Fullmetal Alchemist had such brutal endings.

Still one of the best series I've ever encountered; but brutal nonetheless.

A good bad ending means that the story was characterization heavy. If the ending is bittersweet, there needs to be an emotional response from the audience in regards to the tragedy suffered by a character.

Having a beloved character go down a dark path really tugs at you.

It's not necessarily sad as it's frustrating. You struggle to create your uber-version, you live through so many challenges you can't help but be a badass, you influence the world around you and ...poof. You die. Or your family dies. Or you get imprisoned.

You can't help but feel ripped off. I mean your character is right there...and he gets killed in a cutscene when you know you've taken enough bullets and enough radiation or enough baseball bats to the head to be damn immune to them by now.

If it's well done, they're not so bad. I remember a lot of people complaining about Divine Divinity 2's ending. I personally found it spectacular. Basically, it's easier and more rewarding to have a good ending where the player doesn't end up in tears, be they sad or frustration ones.
