Read the article "The Milkman Cometh" for my opinion on art. The writer summed up exactly how i feel about the subject.

Video games are a medium that incorporate art. It's like asking is "hip hop art", is paper art". Video games are a medium of expression(even if most games are created, written, produced, developed, voice acted, and directed by very narrow-minded "artists").

There's a keen difference boys, a key difference.

Oh to answer one of your hypothetical questions, hiphop is most definitely not art.
Hip Hop is definetely NOT art, it's a medium of expression that incorporates art. It's a medium of expressionism. Phenominal actually.
It's primarily a way to express how big your girls butt is, how nice your rims are, how many guns you have, how many drugs you do, how fly you are, etc... All composed haphazardly to a beat.

This question itself is very subjective, art is a many different things. Sure it could be said that video games are art when we look at those who, even decades later, think that Super Mario Bros is the best game ever and they will never sell there SNES for that very reason. While this opinion can never truly be proven true or false, it is a misguided ideal to go off of objectively. In my opinion, saying games are art right now would be like saying TV shows are art. Some are extraordinarily good which most will agree is riveting, and there are some made simply to suck on the teat of a cretin niche. Its all about taste as it is, and in a market where the fan basis swells around twitchy, instant gratification, first person shooters, its going to be hard to clearly define a game as a ?masterpiece.? No matter how much any one praises Okami as a beautiful piece of art, there will always be those people who didn?t like the game play or story because it was ?too Japanese.? But still, I dare any of you to claim one of the Madden?s could be art.

You're operating under a misconception. That's like saying poetry is for conveying mostly angst, self loathing or inadequacy,

What the individual artists do is irrelevant, it does not define what the medium is as a whole. What you're "TRYING" to allude to is what commercial American rap music is about. That's not what hip hop is primarily involved with. Music is the most prominent expression of hip hop. The poetry is completely third party.

If you've got a grudge with hip hop, I'd prefer we not pollute this topic with some self-righteous indignation. Feel free to take it to PMs.

both team ico games are art, so are okami, bioshock, i'd say the elder scrolls games border on it, possibly something like mass effect or another massive, open world game.

Games have not reached their full artistic potential yet, but developers should base further efforts on the philosophies and designs of the games by Suda51, Team Ico, and Tim Schaffer.

Define art. For me, art is a creation that is meant to affect the viewer emotionally in some way, whether it is to make them think, laugh, cry or feel satisfied.
Fear is being the only one left on your team, with one remaining point of health, surrounded in close quarters by three pyros.
I never play Arena matches, so I wouldn't know ^^

Anyway, how was that related to what you quoted?

If we go by what Oscar Wilde says "All Art is quite useless"

Thus games are art as they can bring the same emotions as any old/modern art piece.

Everything is Art: Anything intended to be "art" is art
The world would be quite... interesting if we went by everything Mr. Wilde says =D

It's probably because I'm not a snobby pretentious elitist, but I think games are art. Not just the ones with weird postmodernism either, but most games. I would consider Mario and Zelda art by my incredibly loose philistine definition. Half-Life is art with its level design and aesthetic style. And Chrono Trigger sure as hell is a beautiful peace of art.

Fear is an emotion.

Probably be a paradise where Absinthe and Rentboys are on tap and the internet is only used to arrange sellings of fine canes.

Art for me is something that makes me think about things differently. MGS2, Half-life2 and FF7 all affected me greatly. I'd call those games art without question.
Still, my definition gets a bit hazy when it comes to games like Mario Galaxy. I'd consider that art because of how beautiful it is. How the music, sound effects and visuals come together to form something that sends shivers down my spine. It didn't make me think about things differently though :p

the games that would best fit a definition of art in gaming would probably be the following:

The Path
Flower
Linger in Shadows

All are very unique and all in their own way, very beautiful

My opinion on this topic is that games are NOT art.
SOME games are art. but that list is a lot smaller than most people would care to admit.
for example, Rosalie Gascgoine is an artist. one of her artworks are a bunch of roadsigns appropriated onto a canvas. this does not mean roadsigns are art. games in general are not art, but some games have touched certain people deeper than any art has.
