I was referring to "Enthusiasts".

Or "People who are about video games".

It's always been the platform with most innovations. And tanks to the innovation of digital downloads through services like Steam, PC gaming is bigger than ever. And more developers and publishers are taking note of that. So yeah, we kind of are in another golden age of PC gaming.

Y'know how the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 looked like amazing machines with competent controls compared to the Wii? It's a bit like that. PC gaming hasn't necessarily improved much in the past few years (besides specs) but when compared to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, it may as well be literally made out of gold.

I'm not trying to rag on PC gaming here, either, just that juxtaposition is more powerful than reality.

Nope. As a Wintel purist, I definitely don't feel it. Piss poor ports, late ports, mobile level of shovelware are still there and growing. Still feel the same as I did 10 and 20 years ago -- games with retardedly long shelf life, and do whatever the fuck you want with mods.

I think the lack of enthusiasm is because all 3 consoles are terrible right now, and don't have games from the past for the transitional period. It'll get better in 2-3 years (when I get my PS4)

Digital distribution has more than hit it's stride, and publishers hold less control over releases, for better and for worse.

Indie projects can get off the ground absurdly easily, for better and for worse; more and more titles from earlier years are being brought back to being playable and available at a low cost.

There's more to gaming on a PC than mega-rigs and 1440p and MMOFPSes.

We've been there for a while, and it's got very little to do with consoles.

I think the newest Golden Age of PC gaming kicked off when kickstarter became popular.
Suddenly, people were able to support and receive the games they wanted, not just those who corporate thought gamers would like.
i totally agree with you there, its brought a renaissance to pc gaming that had be sorely lacking. it obviously hasnt all be good, we all know of kickstarters that have failed, the glut of crappy cash in clones and shitty indy games. but and its a huge but, we are finally getting back to how it used to be with developers finally making games they want to make and make them for gamers rather than for a corporate executive at the bidding of a PR guy.

look at the games that have made millions with crowd funding. isometric PG's, space sims, etc all classed as niche and killed off by mainstream developers and publishers as not having enough appeal to make games for. now we get games that actual gamers want :D

Irritating... Sorry thought this was another Diesel thread for a second there.

Why does the opening posts of these type of threads always go straight to power? You want a "powerhouse" console than go grab a Jaguar and see how much benefit that musters. Oh and before you mention (as it always happens in these sort of threads) "but Xbone is said to be a supercomputer and isn't"...its kayfabe buddy. Big Show was billed at 500lb for most of his career, Jaguar being the world's first 64 bit machine that sort of thing.

Its about the games simply put and Nintendo and Sony can easily deliver those with their own studios, and the assured exclusive Japanese third party support.

It appears to me that, developers are now paying a lot more attention to the PC as a platform, and more enthusiast are joining the platform after having grown tired of the consoles.

And that seems like a good thing, overall.

Competition is never a bad thing. And a platform which is significantly different from the consoles, yet capable of competing is exactly what the industry needs.
Really going need a citation on this claim that "developers" have grown tired of consoles. Sounds like pure tripe to me, but if you can mosey up evidence of this epidemic than I'll listen.
ok dude, you like consoles and thats fine, but really you should give PC WAAAY more credit, i mean ignoring power and counting only dem games

according to metacritic, PC has released more critically acclaimed titles this year alone than any platform by a wide margin

It's not "a new" Golden Age, it's THE Golden Age.

The late 90s early 2000s were fine too, but with a lot fewer games, and a more dominant console industry.

Is this all that this forum brings to the discussion of video games? PC v console?

Yaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnn!

One of the most tedious topics on this site.

The one thing I will say on the matter is why are these threads always started by PC gamers?

I sold my 360 weeks after I bought it to buy a gaming PC. 1-3 decent consoles exclusives are entirely forgettable.

I dunno about golden age but PC gaming will get better and better in coming years, consoles will fall further behind.

By the time next console generation comes PC will become too dominant, and sony/MS will fail utterly.

Are you saying consoles have ever been more powerful than a good pc of the same generation?
You are mistaken, pcs have always had more power at their disposal by their very nature.
Consoles strong point is convenience. Plop the game in and play. It works.
No patches, no drivers, no need to study up on command lines or whatever, no headache. Simple.
You can just focus on playing the game.

Or at least that's how it used to be, nowadays consoles adopted many of pcs characteristics such as patches, drm, the need for installation and even such things as blue screens of death, freezing up, headaches, while pcs are no longer the arcane machines requiring lots of reading up to know how to fix errors they used to be.

Thus, consoles are going to be drifting into irrelevancy eventually as they become more and more indistinguishable from pcs, apart from having proprietary firmware that limits what you can do with it to what the manufacturer so gracefully permits which isn't much at all if sonys show with the ps3 is any indication.

PC golden age has been always with better exclusive, superior multiplats etc
plus this new gen i dont think anything on console is worth it especially when games like MGS5 is also coming to PC.
Battlefield 4 and MGS 5 were the only two reasons I was ever considering a PS4. The guys I played Battlefield 3 with aren't getting BF4 as it was crappy and broken at launch, and it's taken them so long to fix it that it's not worth it. Now that Phantom Pain is getting a PC release I have absolutley no reason to spend the £400+ on a new console, when I can put that money into a new graphcis card or whatever. Totally agree.

Let me guess, these developers you speak of are the lads working in development trying to break into the main roster? Just some reality in case you believe it as such, they aren't "tired", "angry", or marks for the indie scene (that is kayfabe for the few who are such things). When you're in the process of breaking into the main roster if you're smart you're going to shake the hands of all the vets, main eventers (unlikely to be put into a main event if all the top boys hate you), midcarders (the guys who can help you reach the main event), managers (who can help you work on certain aspects), and so forth.
They aren't and trust me on this going to work so hard to get into the roster to than shoot on all the top guys, and go all spot monkey in matches to show how much "better" they are. That road leads to full time jobber status at best, or full blown termination at worse.

You always expose yourself with responses like this. Why is it some grand competition?
Where exactly in my post do I put PC down exactly? Did my mention of power being secondary and games being primary send that vibe? Very odd if so. The OP says every game he is interested in is coming to PC, and I merely said that Nintendo and Sony will have exclusives that others (me included of course) will be interested that won't be coming to PC.

Oh and I don't need to be told how much pretentious indie garbage is on PC no (and as this always gets twisted, this isn't a knock against indie games in general. There are in fact indie games I like, most like anything else are tosh that are handled with kid gloves).

It doesn't feel any different to me. I never considered PC gaming to be dying or something like that, occasionally there would be titles that would come to consoles and not on PC and perhaps sometime later they would eventually get a PC release, same thing is happening now.

also im not trying to turn this into a competition, im just saying, PC has some good games too, and its doing great right now

also i dont think most games on that list are pretentious indie garbage

I'm not sure if we can call this period a golden age, but 4-7 years ago certainly was a PC gaming dark age.

I have to have a PC for titles like Crusader Kings 2, Total War X and the like. I have to have consoles and handhelds for everything else I like. I've had to say this a great many times now on here as apparently not picking a "side" on these things is unthinkable to some people.
That is because this is a PC majority site, on average I'm going to call out the bunkum of PC gamers more often simply on the virtue of there being more of them on here.

They compliment each other, the claim of "well X has more better games" is irrelevant to make.

Well people will see things differently.

I think the golden age was last generation. Steam Green Light is kind of killed it a little bit. Plus steam deals aren't as awesome as they use to be.

im not saying anything different, i just got the wrong message from you because lets be honest, you often diss PC too much

but i apologize i reached some wrong conclusions
