Yes. While the individual may be slightly nicer and kinder, people are becoming slightly more stupid, more vapid, and more sloth. Always have been, always will be. That's why we don't have world peace, food for everyone, or clean energy.
However, I personally think it's the fact that society on the progressively becoming more slack-jawed that is what has caused the cruel comedy seen in the media. People don't have the wit to wrap their brains around tactful social satires, so comics and producers stoop to giving their viewers stereotypes, put-downs, and extreme slapstick.
Don't get me wrong, the Three Stooges are great, but part of what makes them so are the puns and routines they go through.
"How can we have a round table confrence if we got a square tabe?"
"Oh, in Moronica nothing is on the square: we shall have to cut corners!"
*Moe hands Larry a saw*
"Get cuttin'!"
Moe- "On second thought, throw him to the lions!"
Curly- "But we ain't got any lions! How 'bout the tigers or the cubs?"
Larry- "Or the Giants?"
*Moe gets peeved*
Moe- "Why have we no lions!?!"
Curly- "Because there's no bones in ice-cream!"
Moe- "Well, there's... iwifubv;oqjf !!
