games that have uber good graphics generally look nice and play nice but the game mechanics most often fail and annoy me. a story blended with a game with uber good graphics keep me entertained and wanting to play again and again even games that have really shitty graphics still keep entertaining for years to come

I agree. There are many games On the Ps2 and original XBOX that I still play because they have a great story and great gameplay instead of so many next gen games that just look really really pretty.

This should really be in Gaming Discussion (EDIT: And thus it is. I keep forgetting the mods can do that...).

Actually, never mind, it shouldn't, since this question gets asked once a week.

I've never enjoyed the sound of this graphics debate, because it's so obvious that the "graphics aren't as important as..." stance is logical that when you think about it, the problem doesn't even exist. There is no game where there is no good story, and bad gameplay, but good graphics, that people like. Every game that people like has some sort of redeeming quality. Also, I hate to hear, upon someone (or myself) claiming that a game has good graphics, "WELL GRAPHICS DONT MATTER ITS ALL ABOUT GAMEPLAY ANYWAY." Look, just because its not the most important thing doesn't mean it can't be appreciated, and it definitely does matter to some extent.

I expect the graphics to be less of an issue with the latest hardware and I've rarely seen any stories worth anything since the ps2.

Is it too much to ask for both?

The majority of people- myself included- want a good story more, I think.

Anyone who disagrees can try explaining to me how the KOTOR series ever made any money even though it's catastrophically ugly.

Presentation is very important, but graphical power doesn't make a good presentation.

domble's example also works to make my point, KOTOR did not have state of the art graphics, what it did have was some rather nice design (at parts, the ship in the picture above me is indeed pretty ugly) and a nice (albeit stolen) soundtrack.

I'd say presentation and story are tied for me, but good graphics far below either of them.

You're not quite right there, actually. While it used a few themes from John Williams' Star Wars score, it was mostly new. Obviously the title theme returned, but the majority gave a darker, broodier feel than the heroic anthems of the trilogy. And this was intentional.

KOTOR was your example of an ugly game? Really? Kind of makes me wonder how long you've been playing video games. KOTOR still looks totally fine to me, to this day.

Well I'm talking about he same system that can support Fable and Halo 1 & 2, to put it in perspective. And let's not forget that they put in things like "-Atton looks at player in a confused way-" when they couldn't be bothered making an animation.

Not that it made the game any worse, to this day it's one of my favourites, it's just the best example of how a story can make a game like KOTOR better than, well, most others.

Oh, and my Dad owned a Spectrum when I was a kid. I miss the static image on the front screen with the moving bars around it. Not to mention the "KSCCHHHHHHHEEIISNNNNN" noise it used to make for 10 minutes when you put the cassette in.

With the spectrum you made SURE you wanted to play the game before you started.

As long as the game has enough visual appeal to not be offputting, I don't care what it looks like. Gameplay needs to be tight and there needs to be a compelling, if not "good" narrative.
If they can squeeze breathtaking graphics in there as well, so much the better.

It depends on the game you are playing. Like, I play Zelda64 and the blurry walls and low polycount are great because you imagine the details of the landscape, heightening the fantasy and overall experience. Same thing for MGS. The orignal game is MUCH darker than the gamecube remake, which seems likea cartoon, purely because of the graphics (and afew shitty cutscenes, but shh)

on the other hand, when you have an art game built around a low-key premise, you need better graphics. If you'e ever played The Path, you know its artistry is limited by the poor illustration. Shadow of the Colossus is anther game like this, though to a lesser extent. SotC was GORGEOUS in motion, which is what keeps you playing it. Thats not a dig at the game, because I love it.

It depends on the type of ugly. Take FF7, the story is great but I can't stand playing it because of the polygon graphics. However, 8-bit graphics don't bug me at all. Basically, as long as it doesn't look like a geometry lesson, graphics don't bother me too much.

list of most important things in a game
(A)gameplay
(B)story
(C)graphics
i couldnt play a game without good gameplay, story is nice for cutscenes and graphics are just icing on the cake. although it varies as online shooters dont need a story (bioshock online does though) so its just gameplay and graphics.... yay MAG

so basically i like them but no not necesary

KOTOR isn't bad looking.

This is bad looking. But it was still succesfull, going so far as to spawn several sequels and a multitude of spinoffs. Thats right, the first Civilization.

So no, graphis can't make up for shitty gameplay or lousy story. It can make things pretty, but that fades after a few minutes into the game.

Like Spygon said before me, "you can dress a turd up all you want but its still a turd".

And not all gold glitters.

See I rank gameplay and story as being equal, I find that if I'm not being driven by a good story then all the gameplay in the world isn't going to disguise the fact that I'm just pressing buttons, and likewise if the gameplay is poor then I might as well just read a book.

That's just me though, I'm pretty fickle.
