Uber graphics are nice and all but gameplay and storyline override it completely. I will always take story and gameplay over graphics.

The Mother series for example.

Absolutely lovely games storywise.

Also Operation Flashpoint:

It's stupendously ugly but gameplay-wise it's brilliant.

erm puzzle and adventure games do have gameplay. what you mean its a game and you dont interact? that interaction or plaing is gameplay, story is what is not played aka the cutscenes. so really you just said that puzzle games are completely cutscene based.
although you can have story with online look at bioshock 2 that will have a seperate story for online.
Sorry to be fickle, and I don't mean to sound like a dick even if that's the way it comes across, but clicking an object isn't gameplay. If that was the case you'd "play" Microsoft Word. I see adventure games as a book that you solve a puzzle to turn the page sort of thing.

I didn't mean to start a discussion over it, it's just that in my opinion a game needs a good story and good gameplay for me to like it, that's all.

I'm not having an easy time on this thread, am I? Hahaha
if clicking isnt a game wtf are most rpg's??

anyway so tetris is alovely story the L meets up with its brother square how nice.

Good graphics should help the story to be told, so it's kind of a pointless argument.

Examples: Bioshock, Half Life 2... neither would have been as effective at storytelling without thier amazing graphics

Graphics may pull us in, but it's the stories that keep us coming back. True, graphics help to enhance the immersion, but so can a good plot or memorable/likable characters, and the latter is a far greater challenge than the former.

Even gameplay isn't actually all that important. It's like RPGs, despite the different magic systems and/or card games, Final Fantasy VII doesn't really play that differently from VIII, IX, X, and so on. Visit towns, talk to people, fight monsters, level up, fight stronger monsters, get backstory, level up, and so on. That isn't, of course, why we endure the 40-hour grindfest.

Is it too much to ask for both?

The majority of people- myself included- want a good story more, I think.

Anyone who disagrees can try explaining to me how the KOTOR series ever made any money even though it's catastrophically ugly.

<- LOOK AT IT! THIS MADE MILLIONS!
You do realize that KOTOR came out in 2003, right? It isn't ugly. You're comparing it to new games.
And everyone is listing good games that came out years ago. If any game came out with the graphics of the games you people are showing, no one would buy it.

Okay, I'll say it again, i'm comparing it to an RPG like FABLE, which came out around the same time, on a system that supported a game like Halo 2- Both of which had vastly superior graphics and animations. I was just using KOTOR as an example of a game which, while not having absolutely, rock bottom graphics, had visuals that didn't quite compare to other games of the time AND WAS A LOT BETTER.

Lol tetris was epic, everyone knows it. Hear about its inventor? He was Russian so it was "the people's game", he never got a penny for it. Poor bastard.

In response to your question I don't know, it just is.
(that arguement works for all the women in my life, I thought I'd give it a try.)

Well, put it this way. I continually go back to the thief series, and those graphics were horrible (not for their time of course).

Actually a game can be face meltingly pretty and have a story that ranks on par with with a famous novel, but if the gameplay isn't very fun, then I don't like the game. Image the possibility of a broken camera, repetitive combat system and unintuitive menus coupled with confusing controls and poor level design and your game, no matter how pretty and interestingly storied is garbage.
Take Prototype for example. Horrible repetitive gameplay, the Graphics weren't too crash hot themselves, but the story was not bad (imo).
