Are you actually good at gaming?

I've been gaming since I was about 6 or 7, and I would never claim to be a master by any stretch of the imagination. In fact usually when I go up against another human player I usually get my ass handed to me, but I think I do alright.

The first question should be whether your sense of what constitutes a "good" gamer considers only multiplayer, because it is entirely possible to be good without winning, without being the best. As for any single player game, shouldn't it be good enough to have gotten through it? Are you not good at it then?

Been playing driving sims for a while, managed to complete GT4 to 97%. Got one of the top 20 scores in drifting in NFS: Carbon, but I don't know how official that list was. The score was pretty off the charts though. However, I don't try all that hard in modern driving games as much as I love them, just don't have the time. Now I'm happy to play on the next difficulty after normal, with flashbacks. Like to turn off all the driving assists though, love wrestling the car and being all delicate with it, without ABS, traction, throttle cut or whatever.

For shooting, I used to keep a pretty decent score in CS, but nowadays I just play singleplayer on Hard, whatever that is (usually the one between Insane and Normal). I've finished all the R6:Vegas2 terrorist hunts on Realistic, with a pistol, if that counts for anything. And I've mastered a few older Rainbow 6 games, might not mean much to some people here but looking back on how stupidly hard they were (talking about Raven Shield) I'm quite proud of it now.

All these action/RPG hybrid games are a bit too easy nowadays, (Mass Effect, Borderlands, Oblivion, Fallout3/NV) I don't know why I don't see a challenge in any of them, except maybe DA:O, but that's more RPG than action still. Still like the process of figuring out the games mechanics, that's where the value is in for me, and the stories are great.

Back when I was in highschool I was a competitive gamer. Now I'm just bad at almost everything I play; no time to hone in on any one genre and too many games in my library. I don't care though, I still have my fun.

im a pretty good platform gamer (altough i have never beaten Rayman 1) but im pretty good to learn patterns and enemies weaknies.
FPS im decent, i beat AVP 2010 on Nightmare and DOOM 1 and 2 on the second hardest diff.
RTS im okay on easy and medium but hard is nor my cup of tea (im still trying to beat RA3 on hard)
i suck at Racing... Moving on
JRPG i can really beat with no effort unless i don´t like the game.
so here is a pic of me :)

I'm awful at virtually every game I play. The only games I have any hope of playing well are the Smash Bros games. And even then I came in 4th in a Brawl tournament a month ago.

I'm pretty sure I was supposed to be a jock (I was always good at sports), but my skin disease kinda prevented me from ever becoming hardcore into them.

Yes and No, I'm terrible at Multiplayer FPS. Just no good at all! But things like RPG, Puzzle, Platform, RTS and so on I can say I'm pretty good. Logic I'm good with but pinpoint accuracy I'm useless and mostly careless. Although I did PWN at Borderlands :p

Gaming in general? I'm pretty decent.

However I'm stubborn and refuse to use those weapons/characters/tactics regarded as "the best". i.e. I like thinking out of the box and making my own way through the game rather than being like everyone else. I usually end up doing fairly well for myself despite this handicap.

But my main skill are with the following: Ace Combat (multiplayer), Robotech, and Phantom Crash. In those games, I'm damn near unstoppable.

There are three things I excel above most people at. Shooting firearms (rifle, shotgun, or handgun), troubleshooting computers, and video games. Thats not to say I am the best, or even in the top 10%. However, I am better than the average jerk.

My old man watches me game sometimes and hes still amazed at the hand eye coordination even an average gamer has much less a good gamer.

Offline, yeah, I think I'm pretty good at them. I can beat most games on their hardest difficulties. Especially the more I enjoy the game in question. I'm not amazing at them though, there'll usually be bottlenecks where I get stuck for a bit, but I do alright.

Online, I'm pretty average. I'm good enough that I can break even against or beat your average or casual player who's not dedicated to a single game or genre without putting in much practice in myself, but I'll usually get beaten by the more dedicated players who've put in the time and commitment.

Well I have been gaming since I was 3 so I have been doing it for slightly more than 16 years now and I like to think I am good at basically every game genre I have played(all - sport and racing games bar Tony Hawk and Snowboarding type games). I can finish any game I have on the hardest setting although obviously in stuff like Halo on hardest I will die a bit but I get it done(takes me about 1/2 an hour to 3/4 hour per mission on Halo 3 Legendary to give you an idea on how often I'd die. While on Normal I finished the game in under 3hours).

Although Fighting games against other players I am not that good or I assume I am not given I do not play them online and while I do not have a good KDR overall in most shooters I always tend to be at least mid table on my team(usually higher) more or less every game.

Eh, probably not as I play games for fun instead of challenge.

I don't have a competitive nature at all.

So so. Frankly, there are a lot better gamers out there than me and heck, even some non-gamers can kick my arse at certain games. Going by genres:

It's hard to tell whether one's good at something like RPGs. Morrowind/Oblivion I kicked arse, but then, I'm pretty sure the game's designed for it. Dragon Age: Origins I played through on Normal, found it remarkably easy after a while, but that's likely cause I stacked Mages (3+warrior tank). I played ME2 on some higher difficulty but couldn't tell you exactly which one, I was aiming for the highest, but I might've tuned it down to the one below. But yeah, I reckon I'm above average at RPGs.

Third person shooters I'm generally great at, at least the singleplayer. Likely has something to do with the fact they're (well, the ones I play) mostly stealth games or at least have stealth elements and that's definitely my forte and my preferred style of play - I like having the time to think and plan.

FPS... Well, I played CoD on the highest difficulty. Bit of a pita getting pwned now and again by ridiculous difficulty, but mostly managed through it fine. Multiplayer... I was relatively decent at Counter Strike back when I played it, but nothing special (I suck arse now), never really played CoD online (once, for some 5 minutes, when it was a free Steam weekend but I got bored, not my kind of game). Battlefield was always my (FPS) game and I do pretty well at it with most roles, particularly vehicles (further particularly air vehicles, whether doing transport, assault or both), but I also do just fine with infantry as well, mostly playing snipers and engineers as I enjoy support, but I play Medics and to a slightly lesser extent, Assault as well.

RTSs I'm generally not good at. Could be just lack of my love for the genre, I do enjoy it on a level, but never really played it much. C&C Generals: Zero Hour I fire up with some mates now and again at LAN parties, but I'm awful if I need to be alone. With a team mate? Gimme a bit of protection and you'll have a pile of Auroras ready to blast the hell out of whatever you need as well as a pretty good protection. So all around, I'm a decent support, but I wouldn't survive 5 minutes with guys who played any RTS regularly. As for TBSs, I like Civilization and TW: Rome, but can't really say I was ever especially great at them.

MMOs... Long story short, I'm good at them. I've got pretty decent organizational skills (that mostly really come down to dedication), so I usually move up as well and end up leading the others and have no trouble playing my role to the max while doing it.

Aside from ultra realistic racers like the Forza series (They might as well give you an actually license if you can figure some of those games out) and sports titles which I just refuse to play, I'd say yes I'm pretty good. I'm not great or anything but it's been a long time since I was forced down to the easy setting.
