Just makes all though distaining looks go away.
Weak.

OT: I call myself an American outside of the country, because if I say "Kansas" no one knows what I am talking about anyway.
Agreed. I let anyone that wants to know I am from the US when I travel abroad.

Through I let anyone in the states know that I am from Washington state when I travel around in side the US. I identify home with that state even through I have lived in Texas, California, Utah, and Georgia.

A question for the American's amongst us, and others if you want.

Do you see your state as a country where you come from, or do you just count yourself plain American?

I'm from The Netherlands and always identify myself that way. (not European)
Nederlander? Ik ben een Utrechter!
I usually refrain from calling myself ''Een Achterhoeker'' mainly because people immediately think I must be a farmer >_>.
at least, the more to the east, the sooner they think you're a farmer from my experience.

I view myself from Delaware first, then as a resident of the US, mainly because I can relate myself more so to the state rather than the entire country.

Well, I consider myself an American and a New Jersey-an, however in your example how you don't consider yourself a European, Europe is a Continent, where as America is just a country, I doubt many Americans consider themselves North Americans (the continent)

I'm Wirralian, i'm a Northerner, i'm English, I'm British, i'm a European, i'm a Westerner and i'm a human being.

Being human is the most important identity i hold, the importance of others depends on the context.

"I am a Uterecther?"

This is why i love European languages, i don't even know Dutch but from my limited knowledge of German i can have a good stab at understanding what your saying.

But seriously, I'd never identify myself as European. I think it's a little strange that some pro-EU people actually think that I should.
Identity comes at many levels, your from Uterecht, your Dutch, your European, your a Westerner, and your a human. The importance of these identities depends on the context in which you are in. The European identity is not really that important when, say, your in a Dutch university....but say you want to go another EU state- being an EU citizen kind of helps. Or say your outside the EU and can't find a Dutch embassy- you can go to an embassy of any other EU state and they'll give you what help you need.

The Western identity is probably more important in most circumstances though: Say your in an airport in China: Being surrounded by Chinese people, you'll probably identify with any Westerner that you can see.

You realise Europe is a Continent right?

Well that's not quite the same thing since, unless I'm mistaken, The Netherlands is a country and Europe is a continent. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
Exactly why the thread was originally meant for Americans.
I was just making an example.
No problem, as long as you knew, it's all good.
