I saw an article, not sure if it was here or somewhere else, about the FCC deeming 25 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed. That is INSANE. My speed is 3 Mbps. In my country 15 Mbps is the maximum, and only businesses can afford that most of the time. The Philippines does have one of the worst internet speeds in the world, but I have seen a lot of Americans and other foreigners complaining about their internet. So now I'm kind of interested, because I want to see people, businesses, and governments adapting to a world where almost everything is getting connected via the power of the internet. If some guy running for president had improving internet speeds in my country as part of his itinerary, he would have my vote (of course, if he had other beneficial goals as well).

Anyway, are you fine with your internet speeds? Do you think 25 Mbps really should be the minimum, or is way too high? I know I would love some 25 Mbps action.

Here in North America (at least a sizeable portion), the internet is a huge cornerstone of our culture. It's so pervasive that it's not only a social tool, but an essential business tool used by practically everyone. We strongly desire but also kinda need speedy internet services.

Edit
Just tested my connection.
Ping = 4 ms (don't really know what that means)
Download Speed = 26.49 Mbps
Upload Speed = 26.73 mbps

Is it possible for upload speed to be slightly faster than download?

It's pretty good.

152mbps Down with 16mbps up.

It means a download speed of about 16MB/s, and an upload of 1.5MB/s.

Which is pretty nice, honestly. Had it for a few years, ISP is talking about increasing the speed to 500MB/s or 1GB/s this year, so, things may get interesting.

Actually yes.

My theoretical speed is 25MB/s.

That results in actual downloads at about 2-3MB/s.

That probably seems slow to people in some other countries. But by the standards of Australia's shitty internet it's actually okay. Does everything I need it to.

I have 50 mbps down (claimed under ideal conditions that never come up) and while I'm decently satisfied I would definitely get better internet if it was available to me. If I could get google fiber or something I would absolutely take it in a heartbeat.

25 mbps honestly seems kind of low for what I think the minimum should be, but it's a step in the right direction considering I'm pretty sure a majority of the US doesn't have 25 mbps at the moment.

In conclusion, ISPs are fucking assholes.

I live in Australia. The previous government decided that high internet speeds are important and worht investing in, so the current bunch of clowns aren't allowed to think so.

Another person from Australia.
And put simply ...

No.

It might be the fact that I live in a house with three other people, and that I use up a lot of the internet limit.
But that's the problem. With the amount of internet we are able to afford, I can't do many things. Like play online or watch (more than one) stream. I just think that limited internet is bullshit ... there is probably some kind of good reason for it, but I still dislike it.

It's a reason I want to move out.
... and if I can move to a place with better internet, all the better.

Even though I'm Australian, I used to think that my internet speeds were just fine. They got the job done, I can raid in WoW at a level that allowed me to be in the top 1000 Warlocks in the world for a while. But then I spent some time in Japan. Their god damn mobile phone speeds are faster than our fastest wired broadband service and it's less than half the price per month than ours.

Fuck Abbot for killing our fiber optic network.

I'll let you in on a little secret, there isn't.

The reason you have shitty internet is because your ISP has a monopoly and you'll pay for their terrible service because you have no other choice. The reason you have terrible internet is because your ISP is too greedy to invest in their infrastructure. After all, why would spend money upgrading their infrastructure when they when they get the same amount of money by not doing that.

100 Mbps download, 10 Mbps upload.

It's not bad, I can do everything I need at pretty fast speeds.

Meh, not really. 10Mbps down. It's 10% of what can now legally be classified as broadband. It plays games fine but if I have to download one, I better pick out a movie to watch first. The only good thing? It's not 1.5Mbps. That was unconscionable. Oh, and it's unlimited. Don't think I could ever live with limited downloads every week/month.

Not really. I have a 6Mbit line but only get about 3.5MBit/s down and 2.3 Mbit/s up.

speedtest.net tells me that I have 7mb/s up and 0.85mb/s down, and that would be great, if it was my actual speed.

At the absolute fastest, which is once every blue moon, I get 1mb/s, but I usually get around 500kb/s to 800kb/s. I have no idea how fast my upload speed is.

I live in the UK, and my friend up the road gets 8-10mb/s on Steam, and I live in envy of that.

Nope. We're supposed to get 100mb/s, but I'm pretty sure it's never been above 50. Usually around 10 or lower.

I'm on my apartment complex's wifi and while it can get slow during the day... it's still charter business 100mbps service.

So my complaints by pass the broadband, and stick more with the wifi and people who murder it during day time hours.

My internet has the stunning seeds of about 8mbps down, somwhere near 1 to 1.5 mbps up, but I'm happy with it, because I don't have to pay much for it anyway and I've got patience.

And it may not matter that much. My mom just got FIOS and doing a simple speed test, it is screaming fast. Yet anything she tries to get, still pretty much takes the same amount of time. The reason: bottlenecks. Her laptop and the servers to which it is connecting can only do things so fast.

Where it really would matter, I think: when you have a large family on one connection. The kids are watching youtube on their phones, wife doing work at the kitchen table, me online gaming. It can add up.

My current biggest gripe? They keep asking me to register for a new modem. I do online, and the web page reads, "Ooops, you already did this!" No duh! Months later, I am still on an 8 year old modem! I might just go to Amazon and buy one myself!

Not even remotely satisfied.

I pay for bottom rung 50 Mbps.... I get between 10-18Mbps

However speed is really not a relevant factor to me. What makes me unsatisfied is the unreasonable cash grab my third string who thinks its an industry leader ISP implemented thresholds without any actual justification or need to do so.

Yet, I cannot use DSL, because the fastest DSL provider can only provide 1.5 Mbps out of the 12 Mbps they would sell me. Moreover, DSL is not even remotely acceptable for any online classes, which I take. Nothing like being in the middle of a test to have your connection lag out and drop, killing your connection to the exam and locking you out of the exam. To which with online classes, its usually part of the Syllabi that you have a "reliable" connection and no exceptions will be made for your failure to have planned accordingly.

So I am stuck using a grossly inferior, anti consumer ISP that is gouging me, continually devaluing their service, Not providing me the service they claim I have. Yet the closest thing to a viable alternative is a mobile hotspot on sprints wireless network that locally cant do better than 3g speed, for literally twice what I am paying now.

So, whats not to love? Amirite?

Not at the moment, I moved from a rural area where I had 24/2 mbps and I got about 20/2 which is quite alright. Last month I moved to a more developed area so I assumed that my speed would increase or at the very least not decrease, but I was wrong and now I'm lying at 11/0.8 mbps. I'm plenty disappointed but it's offset a little bit since they're going to install fiber within the coming year.

I get about 3/4 mbps. Could be faster, but I can watch videos, stream, and play online with little difficulties. So I'm satisfied, I still think ISPs are fuck-holes though. My only issue is getting the internet to reach my room.
