are you elitist in any way?

I think this happens in university so much. Mostly in jest but my friends and I changed our stance every year.

2nd year -> "fucking first years"
3rd year -> "stupid second and first years"
Masters -> "Ha, bachelors are for nubs"
Doing a PhD -> "god damn undergrads"

I think I can be quite elitist and people occasionally point it out, but that's me and I can't change (read: won't) it, unfortunately. What I will say is that people I know who are superior than me in some way I do respect them for it, so it's give and take.

Not so much an issue when I moved from high-school to university, but I used to feel rather elitist when it came to studying and learning

Coming from a culture where 'responsibility for own learning' is a concept written in 5-feet high burning gold letters in every teacher's guidebook, many of the students in Norwegian high-schools slack their way through 3 years with little regard for their results or prospects.

I came to think of it like this: We should all have the same opportunities of education. However, if you *choose* to squander that opportunity to learn that is given to you, you should not expect the same treatment as those who choose to take it.

... does that seem like a matter of fact idea to you guys? In Norway it is an idea that is considered must definitely elitist.

I must say, I used to think i was a lot worse at everthing than everyone else. My self-esteem was not on top, then i realized it was because I was being bullied by my "friends" who kept coming with "jokes" about how much I suck at everything. And then of course there was my REAL bullies. So for a while I was completely convinced that I was a MUCH better person than they were; just to be able to cope. But now I can confidently (see what i did there?) say that I've put that side of me away. I have great friends now, and even if some of them make fun of me, I know(/hope) that they really respect me. SO to sum up, I used to be elitist when i was bullied, but now I'm pretty much over that.
And that makes me a better person than all of you!!

A few too many people confusing 'elitism' with 'delusions of grandeur'...

And to answer the question... yes, I am an elitist (in an academic context only, though, since I'm in hardly any position to be elitist about anything else).

I believe in meritocracy... go figure.

I suppose I'm slightly elitist when I comapre myself to those who are unemployed by choice and are just a burden on the UK welfare system, having lots of children who will grow into ignorant, unproductive copies of their parents.

Although I try my very hardest to be kind and understanding to everyone and am very "zen," as some friends have put it, I honestly believe the world is mostly full of stupid people. I certainly don't go out of my way to be rude to them- in fact I try to make everyone's day a little brighter as best I can. I also believe that even less intelligent people have valuable things to contribute to the world. However, I still think that people are mostly dumb and petty the majority of the time.

If this makes me elitist, then yeah, I guess I am.

So what is wrong with dark and sick humor? Nothing is better than brutal humor, for example: the "dead ****** storage" part in pulp fiction. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihH_-O7ev2o

But I do understand what you mean, for example some movies are really deep and are so much more than just humor, so than you see others not understanding the sublime message and point of the movie that just laugh at the surface of the movie it seems kinda stupid, like a clockwork orange.

I've been an elitist in the past, yes.

Am I an elitist now? Not in the slightest. If anything, I welcome people to share the same interests as me.

I'm an elitist, but I manage to avoid verbalising it. I just sort of quietly sit, contemptuously thinking about how inferior they are for whatever reason.

One of the main things this applies to is Family Guy. That show just gets on my nerves, and everyone thinks it's the most hilarious thing on Earth. They even think it's hilarious even though you can hear the "whoosh" noise as all the satire goes right over their heads.

Also, does thinking I'm a better person than a hipster just because I'm not a hipster count as elitism?

well I think theres a difference between sick/dark humour and "dumb" houmour which tends to also be gross out because thats an easy way to get a raction

I mean on its own Team America is really really stupid, but because its so stupid its obvious that its satire

I can't say I dislike that kind of humor but I do understand what you mean.

Hey, if we're all elitist doesn't that make us all equal :3 Of course I'll be better than you all; but such is the life of an elitist! It's not my fault your opinions are invalid, mine are flawless and factual and I have excellent taste in games. Also I'm part of the PC master race.

Wow I really like this thread!
