Would you be prepared if there were a massive power outage and the power wouldn't be able to come back on for at least a day or two?
I ask this after what happened in my county, San Diego county, where we lost power at 4 pm yesterday and it didn't come back on until 12 this morning. I was surprised at how many people that I knew who weren't prepared for this outage.

I already have my "THE END IS NIGH" signs just in case of such an occurance.

No electricity for a day or two?! Anarchy! Chaos! Minor inconveniences abound!

You double-posted this thread by the way.

You kidding me? In my town that was the weekly ritual this summer with gas, water and electricity. Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating. The gas went out for 3 days, due to some repairs or something, the water was shut off for two weeks every evening around 9 pm 'till 8 am and the electricity was pretty much random. All with absolutely no notifications or warnings. But yeah, just find other stuff to do. It's not as hard as you may think.

It's not fully on and our area just got lucky. The power is most likely gonna go out again since the grid was what went down. It was caused by someone in Yuma, Arizona and put the county out. Doesn't help that to the north we've got a wildfire burning and a massive Santa Anna hitting right now.

That has never happened to me. A few hours, sure, but never more than that. So no, I guess I'm not really prepared, but I'm pretty comfortable with that.

Whoops, sometimes my iPod likes to do that. I go ask for a thread merge. Thanks.

Yeah most people weren't around us since the highways were very backed up. Sucks for my father because he works for San Diego State University and all state workers and the Navy have to go and help people who might be I'n trouble. Also, could you merge my double-posted threads please?

We had a power outage in my first year of university when I was living in a flat on the edge of campus, there was a park on the other side of the road that my flat overlooked. We simply went there and sat around talking for a few hours, when it started to get dark we came back and chatted in the kitchen or did our own stuff in our own rooms. It was all fine, even the lack of internet. The only issue I'd have is that we have no candles or anything more than wind-up camping lanterns in the family home where I am now, so yeah...

Oh I can survive, but I'd be a bit bored. But the hard part is when it gets too dark to do the others things I could do, like read my new novel I checked out. Also, thank you.

I went without power for an entire week. My family was gone camping and I had to stay home and work. It was during that horrid heat wave that hit the midwest a few months back too. Yea, I was not having much fun.

It's not that bad, but it's literally hellish. Knowing that everything works except the one thing you're addicted to, where there may be big mod duties for you.
EDIT: Btw, it seems like the merge is having some trouble, it's probably just server load, but we'll see.

Well, I live in Florida, and an especially wet par of Florida at that. I live in the middle of a massive chain of lakes, canals and swamps, you'd swear it was the everglades. Anyways, if the power went out it would be ed for the interior of my house, seeing as how the unbearable humidity would surely seep in in two days time...
Nothing I could do to prepare for that, besides buy a generator. Personally the heat doesn't bother me, and I generally love the wildlife here, so I'd probably spend those two days canoeing.

Yes, I've dealt with it by keeping candles with matches/lighters, flashlight radio thing with batteries, and a fully charged gameboy of whatever is the current generation nearby. This worked fine with the summer of 2003 power outage that affected a huge chunk of the east coast all the way into Canada. My house itself only lost power from about 2 pm until 11 pm, so it wasn't that bad, but my uncle was moving from Canada into America, having finally wrangled the legal system, and had to move all his shit down 4 flights of stairs with no elevator, air conditioner, or light.

What honestly bothers me more is having the electricity on and fine and the internet shitting the bed for no apparent reason. That's when I feel robbed.

Yeah, I can do you one better. I've gone without power for about 12 hours in Michigan, in January. That's not much without lights and tv and all that, that's no heat and no water. By the time the power came back on the temperature in the house had dropped to the mid-to-low 40s.

However, I live in Texas now. If the power went out for a week here I'd be okay. Most people wouldn't be though.
