Are young girly boys, muscular soldiers and buxom women really that offensive?

I've seen numerous comments on game selling sites under games like beach volleyball or that uncehamrbra or something game (girl bikini zombie killing squad game) where people wrote they bought the game because of the nearly naked girls in the cover art, so that stuff really does sell even though it's hard for me to believe

Tits are ok as long as it isn't the entire game. For real life examples, see any film starring Eva Mendes' breasts.
You bastard, I lol'd and spit water all over the place and now everything's wet!

Would a black character who constantly went on about fried chicken, a gay character who fussed around the house with a duster while in the latest fashion or an over-zealous Vegan, telling the main character off for doing anything to hurt animals be offensive? If yes, then so are other stereotypes.

Developers use things like this because they're an easy formula to follow. There need not be any innovative genius in slapping a muscular, grizzled man on screen to run around post-apocalyptic grit.

They are not really offensive to me. They just show that there is a lack of vision and creative integrity in the industry.[/quote
well said, but it also shows that no one now gives a crap about a proper character development, and that people like the same thing over and over...
The JRPG is the main guilty party in this area... all the characters in all the games are all testosterone filled fools or girls with melons so big that people need to wear goggles in a 3 miles radius as not to lose their eyes

All of those things can be done right.

Girly Boys: Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia was girly, but badass at the same time.
Muscular soldiers: Jack from MadWorld. No one can complain about Jack, dude was awesome.
Buxon Women: Ok.. I can't think of any that are actually any good right of the top of my head.

STORY TIME! I had a history through film class in school this year, and while watching the final battle scene in Saving Private Ryan something happened on screen that for some reason I found hilarious and I spat iced tea all over the fucking room. Everyone thought I threw up.

But I apologize for your wetness. I hope it doesn't happen again. Is that a weird thing to say? I can't tell.

Whats wrong with the protagonist being a socially awkward, neurotic, sarcastic misanthrope? Surely that sort of character would appeal to thousands of gamers everywhere and not just their fantasies, libidos, etc.

guys, here's a thought. if we got rid of all gaming stereotypes, what kind of original, likable character could we come up with?

stereotypes are stereotypes because people want them. because people want them, we end up seeing a LOT of them. And it's a lot easier to base off a stereotype. in addition, to be totally honest, i had never complained about the breasts portrayed in these games.

I'm just saying, making new characters is significantly harder. even if one is made, it could end up being rather ordinary or simply a milder stereotype.
You have no idea what the word 'stereotype' means, do you? You're saying idiots are idiots because people want them.

Hell, a small-chested leading female and an average built typical male would be welcome additions to any game in my opinion./quote]

one of the reasons why I loved RE4 all the more. Ashley was just an average teenage girl who didnt look like she'd been having more plastic in her than my average space marine army, and leon just looks ike an average guy who just keeps fit, not forcing himself to be a muscle bound governator wannabe. *coughchrisredfieldcoughcoufgh*

just my thoughts

no, i said 'stereotypes are stereotypes because people want them'

Learn to read, please.

Many people are attracted to the idea of a game containing Space marines because other games have them. For them, it's not repetitive, but familiar. For other's though, they deem it repetitive, and labeled it a stereotype. It's not just games too. That's how a stereotype is made for any medium: stories, tv, poetry, movies, you name it.

additionally, back to my original point, if it was the law to kill anyone who released games with stereotypes, people would be working quite hard to stay original if they could or would work at all. but how do we create a character with no references to any stereotype?

almost can't. that's all.

Hey, they're not bad. They're just done already ^^ Even though the industry could use some characters like Nathan Drake: tall, dark, handsome, funny and totally average, I still say that if it wasn't for these cliché's, many games wouldn't be half as fun as they are today.

I'm sorry...I know I bang on about the series.

Silent Hill has always done me wonders, the characters have always been believable, even Alex from homecoming had something about him. Like James from Silent Hill 2, he was just a normal guy, he wasn't trained with weapons, he was just an average joe thrown into his own nightmare, that's what made it good.

I don't mind the muscle-bound death machines, but when they are everywhere in mainstream gaming, it gets quite irritating. We need more characters who are believable.

The problem isn't the archetype, its the stereotype.

I'd like something original, but as long as a common archetype style is plausible and interesting, there shouldn't be no problem with it.

When I have to fight nasty alien from hell, I don't mind, and actually prefer to be in the boots of a "Space Marine" archetype. A battle between a battle-worn bad ass and a horrifying monster is just cool. But if I have to use an archetype that has been prevalent in my game type, either give me an original version of such a archetype, or give me a well done version.
I'd prefer a W40k type Space Marine who has a deep history and a style that is original and detailed, than a masculinity icon like in Gears Of War. I don't hate the GOW guys, but they are a good example of unoriginality.

Pretty boy characters are a unfortunately abused archetype, derived from the popular bishonen style that is run into the ground with a disturbing lack of remorse.
I'm aways careful to note that the pretty boy is to females what the buxom babe is to men, a hollow structure of a gratuitous fantasy, usually attempting to meld cosmetically with something else.
If a "buxom babe" has no personality or other redeeming quality besides her looks, I quickly lose interest.
I'm not just saying that so you don't think I'm a vain pervert, every time a Laura Croft demo comes out, I download it just to see how well they did with Laura's infamous form this time. But I really do have problems with characters trying to pull the sex-sells strategy. No matter what they have to offer, if I catch a hint of that attitude, I begin to revile them.
I'd love to play a great game with a hot babe who is an awesome character, but I can't think of anything like that at the moment, though I'm sure there's a game like that somewhere. (I have my eye on Bayonetta, oh yes I do, you naughty librarian you)
As for the X-blades game, I've seen very little, and what little I've seen has annoyed the hell out of me. I knew it was a sex-sells production the first time I saw it, but I kept my eye on it in case. But after seeing the Unskipable video with the opening scene from the game, I'm staying as far away from that as possible. Even if the game play was any good, its not worth playing it with such a unappealing world. And the main character is like the Paris Hilton of games.

The industry obviously needs to evolve, but I'm fine with a familiar archetype who brings something new or cool to the table. But archetypes like Buxom babes and pretty boys need to be killed off. They are just vain offspring's of other archetypes that have been perverted and rehashed into a bloody mess that can't be hidden for what they really are.
