Are your tastes in music/movies/whatever different from what's 'popular' nowadays?

The majority of people nowadays seem to think that anything comes from 5 years before the present is old, and therefore crap. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this way. I'm known as the Old Man among my group of friends despite the fact I'm 17, because I think all this 'modern' crap is just that. Crap. Most of my favourite singers/bands originated before the 80's (which isn't very old at all, but to them it is). My favourite musician is Johnny Cash, which is pretty much the polar opposite to what is popular with the 'kids'. Movies are the same, really. I love the old Westerns, and noire crime films.

Are you guys the same? Or do you kind of, move with the times?

Personally I can't stand what the radio plays. The local rock station in my city plays Ozzy Osborne LITERALLY once every 30 minutes, as though they're trying to say "BY GOD YOU WILL ENJOY THIS WASHED UP SIGNER WHO SHOULD HAVE RETIRED YEARS AGO!!!!"

But yeah, I'm a juggalo, so by definition my taste in music is far outside of the norm. :p

Thing is, very few original/inspired artists go out of their way to be popular or are just too poor to afford the exposure

Meanwhile, pop "singers" often do try to get into every medium and arse crack to keep their names in the spotlight to make up for a lack of decent songs, this is very expensive for every advert has to be paid for (sure, they are enjoyable to their target audience but who do you think they are???)

I guess so... Most people I talk to think of things that happened a couple of years ago are old and outdated (As you'd expect with people who get phones on contract (That last a year and are replaced) and only listen to music that in the top 10 of whatever timeframe is used for that crap)

I still watch films and TV series from the 80's and 90's and it took me a fair while to start actually getting music on my Itunes that was actually made after I was born, a lot of the stuff I listen to was made between 1979 and 1994.

Of course I don't consider all modern stuff crap, I actually like a lot of modern TV shows, Films and some of the music (Though I haven't a clue what any of the bands/singers or even songs are called, I just know what they sound like and the lyrics to them...)

Also on a sidenote I always feel a bit let down when I talk to people and they have no clue who Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin or even The Red Hot Chilli Peppers are... (I mean c'mon, the Chilli's were really popular around 2001-2004 if I remember correctly... When they released the albums Californiacation and By The Way...)

I would think not. Right now I'm reading classic weird fiction, enjoying classic jazz and goth rock and watching old films, mostly foreign horror. I'm pretty sure that isn't a popular thing to do, but if it was, that'd be cool, a lot of great stuff in those genre's.

In terms of music, I'll listen to whatever I like. That might be Opeth, Devin Townsend, Dream Theater, Bat for Lashes, Tegan and Sara, No Doubt, Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Epica, Abba, Kimbra, Aqua, Yes, or Lady Gaga. I don't give a shit if something is popular or not, or new or old. I don't give a shit about genre labels. If I like it, I like it. I don't have any guilty pleasures. I get the impression that many, many people base their tastes entirely on what's popular (or not) or what's new (or not).

You have the pretentious lot who refuse to listen to anything remotely popular, unless they're doing it ironically of course. The type of people who you can see filled with pride when they can talk down on people who aren't as "sophisticated" as they are (I'm sure this thread will present dozens of examples of this exact kind of person). Then you have the "mainstream" folks who discard anything that isn't current and popular so they don't look out of touch. The type of people who will quickly point out that "that song is SO last year, you geek". I can only conclude that both extremes don't give a shit about music at all and are just trying to portray themselves a certain way. It isn't about the art, it's just about the social group that associating with said art puts you in.

I'd say the same about movies, books, TV, video games, or whatever else as well. If I like it, I like it. That's all that matters.

Musically I tend to listen to a lot of unknown stuff, but there is some ahem mainstream music that I do enjoy.

Film wise, well that's all a mixed bag like with music. Like popular stuff to some extent and enjoy obscure things.

Definitely, sort of a little bit. I like geeky things (hey I'm on the Escapist) and mostly try to keep up with the indie scene but I don't really like anything obscure. All the "obscure" things I keep up with are fairly modern and well known within their own geeky media circles and the things from the past I like was "modern crap" when it was new.

I generally assume people are idiots, so anything that everyone likes must really suck.

Movies: Tarantino, Grindhouse and British comedy. So nope in that front.
TV Shows: My Little Pony and The Walking dead. That is definetly not what's popular
Music: Classic Rock and Acoustic Rock. Not normal at all.
Games: Arkham City, Skyrim and MW3. Quite normal actually.

So yeh, I don't have normal tastes at all.

Musically I don't listen to a lot of unknowns...at least I think so. Most of the bands that I listen to are of the "grunge" variety (Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden), and I think I'd get quite a few people at school maybe scratching their heads if I told them about those bands, but they're still relatively well known. Also listen to some occasional prog rock/metal and quite a bit of video game music.

I don't watch a lot of films so I can't really comment on them. I'm sure my tastes would be a decent bit different from the majority though.

Well, being British, I have to say, British comedy is quite popular. Tarantino, too. Grindhouse, not so much. Bleh.

And...finally! Somebody else who likes The Walking Dead! Most of the people I know complain about there not being enough zombie killing in it.

I like most of the old stuff, sometimes I actually really enjoy classical music. And I'm not some snooty person of refined taste, one of my favorite bands is Electric Six known mostly for their song Gay Bar, and over half their songs are about drugs and sex... I just realized that most songs are actually about that nowadays but I feel it's so overdone that music doesn't even put any passion into sex. I also hate dubstep and that's what's supposed to be super duper coolio homeslice.

As far as music goes, i rarely find a song that i like in the top 15 of a radio station and everything that is popular on youtube should be nuked.

Some of the stuff I like is popular and some of it isn't.

- I like Disney, but I also like The Triplets of Belleville.
- I like Welcome to the Dollhouse, but that doesn't mean I automatically dislike the Spider-Man movies (Except for 3 ofcourse).

I generally like things based on quality not popularity or obscurity.

Well comedy from Britain is popular, shows like the inbetweeners. But those aren't really British comedy. There more American comedy with British people in them. This is all coming from a 13 year old so what's popular to your age might be different. But to my age Tarantino is really unknown.

On the radio where I live the only music that gets played on the popular stations is RnB (or however it's written) and techno. I haven't listened to the radio of my own will for about 2 years now, because that's all they play. I mostly listen to death metal and classic rock, and I admittedly enjoy a bit of Bob Marley from time to time. None of which will be found on the popular stations around where I live, so yeah, I'd say my tastes differ.
