I'd say I'm kind of middle of the road. I don't like super old music and movies, but I don't tend to like a lot of really new stuff, either. Most of my favorite music and movies were made between.. hmm.. 1998-2005?

Eh, a lot of old stuff is crap too. Not as much, proportionately speaking, but we only tend to remember the greats.

I love Hitchcock films and some of the other old suspense and horror films. Vertigo is tied with the Blues Brothers for all-time favourite. But I love some of the musicals and comedies too (like Danny Kaye movies, although not all of the scenes have aged well).

Music, most of the bands I like are pretty well known. The others I tend to like one or two songs a lot, but if their discography was up to the standards of that one song, they'd be more popular too, heheh.

I was under the impression that in the age of the Internet, nothing is "odd" anymore. Everything is popular, no taste is unique or differing. I've always thought that the days of not liking the "right" thing are over, you can't say "this is the thing" or "that is the thing" anymore.

Movies: Tarantino, Grindhouse and British comedy. So nope in that front.
TV Shows: My Little Pony and The Walking dead. That is definetly not what's popular
Music: Classic Rock and Acoustic Rock. Not normal at all.
Games: Arkham City, Skyrim and MW3. Quite normal actually.

So yeh, I don't have normal tastes at all.
Well, being British, I have to say, British comedy is quite popular. Tarantino, too. Grindhouse, not so much. Bleh.

And...finally! Somebody else who likes The Walking Dead! Most of the people I know complain about there not being enough zombie killing in it.
Well comedy from Britain is popular, shows like the inbetweeners. But those aren't really British comedy. There more American comedy with British people in them. This is all coming from a 13 year old so what's popular to your age might be different. But to my age Tarantino is really unknown.
That might be the difference then. But...a 13 year old who understands that zombie apocalypse does not automatically entail zombie killing sprees...well...there's hope for the future I do declare.

The Inbetweeners IS British comedy...well, the show is. The film slanted more towards American comedy.
Which comedies did you have in mind?

I think nerds in general are more open minded than most people. That's why I love hanging out with fellow vidya players.

Well I haven't actually watched the Inbetweeners. It's the trailers that I base my judgement on. Basically by British comedy I mean stuff like Father Ted, Qi, Top Gear and The Mighty Boosh. Thing's without massive pop culture reference overloads and some actual wit. Not saying I don't like stuff like Family Guy or South Park. I love those shows but those are pretty much what are popular with people my age. I do love a good bit of british wit, and you describe the inbetweeners show as having some of that so I'll give it a watch. Also I prefer stuff like 28 weeks later and Children of Men for my post apocolyptic movies than stuff like Day of the Dead or some of that stuff. I still like my zombie games to be just about the killing of zombies, mainly because there hasn't been any that provide otherwise (Dead Island tried but turned into just a fun co op zombie game).

The Inbetweeners does an excellent job of portraying high-school aged kids in this country. It's a personal favourite.
Father Ted is also excellent. Truly excellent. QI was good for a while, but now it just reeks of smugness, so I gave up on it. The Mighty Boosh...hah...so bloody surreal. Crimping though. Awesome.

Have you not seen any Blackadder or Fawlty Towers? Those are the usual recommendations given to British comedy fans.

I've watched Fawlty Towers from when I was a kid. Haven't really sat down and watched a lot of BlackAdder but I've seen clips of it and I must say that it's amazing. It's been nice talking but I think we may be derailing the thread. So let's take this to PM's. :D

Most movies I watch are relatively unknown (or less famous) Studio Ghibli movies like: Whisper Of The Heart, Pom Poko and Sound Of The Ocean. Apart from those I also watch documentaries about Heavy Metal and something to do with an industry (food, war etc) usually.

Pretty much all music I listen to (with the exception of about 4 bands) is unknown to most other people I know, including other Metalheads.

Yes. Most of the movies I really like were made before 2005, a lot of the music, too. This stuff today is all right, I suppose.. but it doesn't appeal to me on a personal level.

heres the thing

"mainstream" doesnt matter anymore...you want good music? hit the internet and your likley to find somthing to suit your tastes, no one has to care about whats playing on the radio..in fact I get annoyed when people do complain about current pop music..just go listen to somthign else

movies? just do a search..find somthing good...then go get it

The majority of people nowadays seem to think that anything comes from 5 years before the present is old, and therefore crap. I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks this way. I'm known as the Old Man among my group of friends despite the fact I'm 17, because I think all this 'modern' crap is just that. Crap. Most of my favourite singers/bands originated before the 80's (which isn't very old at all, but to them it is). My favourite musician is Johnny Cash, which is pretty much the polar opposite to what is popular with the 'kids'. Movies are the same, really. I love the old Westerns, and noire crime films.

Are you guys the same? Or do you kind of, move with the times?
do you realise your doing the exact same thing those "old=crap" dambaasses are doing..writing somthing off based on when it was made

also "old=crap" is generlaly an attitude held by kids/young people..most reasonable adults like good entertainment no matter when it was made

Interestingly, I don't think anyone is actually into what's 'popular' nowadays, except for of course that demographic of pre/teen girls who nobody fucking likes but seem to have the power to control our culture, even if it means allowing it to crash into the ground. I've only seen a handful of them myself; everyone else seems to have the garbage on the radios.

Anyway. I listen to mainly 60's-70's-80's rock, so yeah. You're more likely to catch me listening to Satisfaction than some pop song.

Liking things made a while back and not finding newer stuff personally appealing is nostalgia worship? It seems more like "personal taste" to me. I'm not saying it's better because it's not current, I'm saying it's better (to me) because I like it. I don't care what anyone else likes. I'm not the type who makes fun of others for liking things I don't. I find that pretty childish and indicative of someone who's insecure about their own preferences, to be honest.

I dislike rap full-stop. It feels like an assault on my nervous system. But, yeah. Party anthems don't do much for me and not just modern ones. "Rock and Roll All Night", anyone? It does exactly as much for me as "Tik Tok" does. I enjoy lyrics and I like the ones that strike a chord with me. (No pun intended.)

What it comes down to for me is what I suspect it comes down to for most people: I like what I like because I like it.

Interesting...just a sec, let me do a tally and see where I rank...

Music: Malice Mizer (broke up in 2001), Moi Dix Mois (whose last album by them was from 07), Cradle of Filth (who've been on the decline since Damnation and a Day 2003), Dio, Sabbath, Metallica (up until about ...And Justice).

Movies: It depends on the movie really. Some modern movies are alright like the Avengers movies but my favorite movies are from years ago like Batman Returns, Joe's Apartment, Orgasmo, Baseketball, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, etc.

Games: At the moment I admit that I'm playing Skyrim and Deus Ex: Human Rev...but I'm also playing Ocarina of Time, Pokemon Red and, Leaf Green, Dragon Quest VIII and, Final Fantasy VII.

Good things are timeless. The only reason time would make a good thing bad would be when you're talking about food. Yes, it's sad that there are people who won't watch a movie just because it's in black-and-white and that will likely turn into people not watching a film just because it's in 2D but I like to think those people are the minority. Even if they're not, I keep my entertainment mostly to myself anyway.

Well, considering I do not really have a particular liking for music other then symphonic, I would say my taste is quite different then what's "popular" currently. And to clarify (since I have had to explain this to most people I tell), just because I don't necessarily like other music, doesn't mean I hate it, I just don't listen to it. Even when music is playing, I just treat it like background noise. (Though I should add I do not like rap in any way)

Sorry, no I want acusing YOU personally of nostalga worship...its just somthing you see alot, not only on the internet but in real life..it bothers me becuase at worst it shows ignorance and lack of perspective, and then you get those who proudly rejct anything popular as if it makes them special...when really they are just trading one box for another

and I also wasnt accusing YOU of liking what I decribed there..I was just trying to think about whats popular (and not everything popular sucks...not even music) somtimes I like it..somtimes I like it at the time but its apeal wears off...right now I guess my music taste is expanding

as for me, I like rap..when its good, some is better than others..its a personal taste thing, some people simply arnt going to liek rap at all..regardless of how good it is or the subject matter (because yeah....as a white female theres only so much "Fucking ***** nigga uo yo ass yall aint got shit me!!" I can take) which Is why It end to go for stuff with more abstract lyrics

I like the music of Vienna Teng, who was, very sadly, never popular at all. I just try to focus on song lyrics first, everything else second. Any song that can make me cry is great in my book.

Popular where? in North America? Europe? nope.
Popular here where I live? hell no, and when I was younger the same stuff happened, but now I grew up to stand some of the stuff I loathed (though I still kill any taxi driver who listens to San Juan Sounds in GTA IV).
