Aren't Tourists Fun?

Now, i'm sure we all have over 6 stories of how big of an arsehole tourists have made themselves while vacationing in your *insertwhatyoucallyourlandmasshere*, but this thread isn't about that. This thread is about some good experiences you've had with foreigners.


I was listening to the radio yesterday, and a call came on from a man vacationing from Ireland, and he just told the hosts that he liked the show, and that if he ever saw 'em in the bar(they schedule events in bars or clubs around here almost weekly), he'd "order them a pint, or a glass, or a mug, or whatever you call it around here."

Now i'm not quite sure what it was, but something about that made me go "AAAAWWWWWW..."

Lets hear some examples that debunk the myth that all tourists are self-righteous bastards that think your populus should you go out of their way to make them happy for no reason at all.

I like to give obvious tourists the totally wrong directions to important places. It is funny to think of poor tourists lost and confused. I am mean.

Met some American tourists at a bus stop last week and they were incredibly chatty and friendly, made a nice change from the usually gloomy people you see there.

I sometimes get stopped by tourists in Helsinki for directions, but sadly, because I don't live in Helsinki I'm rarely of any help.

Also, tourists vary from place to place, for example when I was in Spain (Torremolinos and after that, Barcelona), I met some very impolite and just very unpleasant tourists. The worst was this British lady I had a chat with who was really condescending when I told her I'm a Finn, she apparently though my country is piss poor and is full of silly country bumpkins.

I brought up some friends from college to see where I live in Cleveland. It was hilarious. You'd think I'd brought them to some kind of proper city or something, the way they were exploring all wide-eyed and excited.

I enjoy tourists when they come to visit, they as a whole are here to have fun, It's a nice thing. I do however tend to dislike vacationers when they come to visit, as they seem to be doing everything in their power to make life as miserable as possible for themselves and everyone around them so that they can have the least fun possible on their vacation. Separating a tourist from a vacationer can be hard to do, and It's not impossible for tourists to be on vacation. Couple clues to look for include

Tourists seem eager to learn about the area and find things to do unique to it, whereas a vacationer may have already visited before, and now is in a hurry to go back to someplace he has built up in his/her mind.

Tourists love to talk to the locals, enjoy eating out, and make conversation, a vacationer wants to be left alone, and sees everyone else around them as crowding their space.

Welcome to Ireland. Home of Leprachaun's a tora lora. And Bejaysus but sure you look like your a tourist. AMERICA you say ah begorra but that's a fine old place a be di dad aye. Your looking for a pub? Well be god but I know a good one were you'll find the best black stuff in the whole of the Emerald Isle to be sure to be sure. Just don't tell the Brit's we don't want to start that owld business again beggorah.

Err I'd rather the Asian tourist than a lot of the Asians who actually live here (Relax my parents are Asian). When I get bored I act like I'm fresh off the boat from Vietnam, people are surprisingly nice to me which kills the fun, this man who walks around cockle bay at Sydney at 3 in the morning taught me how to dance when I pretended to be a Korean diplomat.

I love how tourists from all over the world come to visit Hadrian's wall (I live within walking distance of a part of it). Historically it's very interesting, a 15 foot high stone wall seperating England and Scotland that was built 2000 years ago by the Romans if you didn't know, but in reality the best parts of it are a pile of rubble and a ditch. I once caught some tourists taking pictures of a dry stone wall believing it to be part of Hadrian's wall.

Most of the tourists are friendly, and I always give directions, or help them when I can as that's what I would expect if I where a tourist in a strange town.
